It's just amazing to see someone get Mitch-slapped for the very first time.
Individually, these are five very talented people. Collectively, they create something greater than the sum of their parts. They become something totally other, something very, very special.

I would recommend their Grammy-winning "Daft Punk", a mashup of seven songs from the electronic duo of the same name. When you watch it, know that the audio was recorded in a closet, the video was shot in an apartment kitchen, and the total budget was $400. That was the recording that convinced RCA to sign them

An introduction to Pentatonix for you:
Scott: the tall blonde guy in the middle with the first solo. He's the baritone of the group but has a range of about 4 octaves. He's just as comfortable harmonizing on the high notes as he is taking the bass line when Avi is singing. Speaking of which...
Avi: the guy with the beanie and the second solo. He's an amazing opera trained bass and doesn't have many solo parts but he always kills it when he does sing. He left the group in 2017 on good terms with the rest of the members and helped find his replacement, Matt.
Kirstin: the only female in the group, she had the third solo. She has the least solos of the main 3 that you'll find, but she always kills it when she does sing(examples are Say Something, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, all of which are among their best work)
Mitch: He's the man with the amazing voice and the final solo in this song. He's a tenor, and has a purely angelic voice. He also has an amazing range, I've heard 5 octaves before.
Kevin: an AMAZING beatboxer, that's his main role, but he occasionally shows off his beautiful tenor voice (Imagine is a great example) and his skills with the cello, which he can play while beatboxing simultaneously.
Pentatonix got their start on an old competition show called the Sing Off where acapella groups competed against each other for a $200,000 cash prize and a recording contract. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang in choir together in school and have been best friends since they were teenagers. They found Avi through a friend and Kevin through one of his "cello boxing"(playing the cello and beatboxing) videos that went viral. They won the competition, you can still find the performances on TH-cam. It's amazing to watch them grow throughout the show. Unfortunately, the record label dropped them shortly after they moved out to make music, so they persevered and self produced for a while until they were picked up by another label. They are the only acapella group to ever win a Grammy, and they have won 3: for their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene ft. Dolly Parton. They're an amazing group, every one of them is one of the most talented singers in the world, and they have never released a bad song imo.
Yes they do sound the same live, and yes it is all acapella. They never use instruments except for the occasional use of a cello when they feel it enhances the song (like their covers of Radioactive, Say Something, and Perfect). They have a rule that if they can't do it live they can't release it.
I recommend all 3 songs above, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Sound of Silence, and anything else you want to hear! Their Grammy winners are all insanely good. Welcome to musical bliss!

If you thought this was a great way to *start* the year, check out their "Thank You" ... a wonderful way to *wrap up* this past year! (It was contributed by Scott, the tall blond guy.)
Others from PTX (as we Pentaholics often call them) to stun/surprise you ...
    "Daft Punk Medley"
    "Mary Did You Know?"
    "Say Something"
    "The 12 Days Of Christmas"
    "Amazing Grace"
    "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Oh, the look on your face when they all stopped singing and Mitch (counter tenor in the hat) came in with the last lead. I've seen so many reactors have that exact same type of reaction the first time hearing him. We call it being Mitch slapped. I reminds me of how I felt the first time and that is part of what us Pentaholics love about watching reactors discovering PTX. They are amazing. 3 Grammy Awards, multiple sold out world tours, and so much more. They really redefined the world of acapella and brought it into the modern age. I look forward to watching more from you. (Do make sure to pause plenty and make original content/comments as YT and RCA Records are both very strict about blocking their videos with reactors)

  • @spideydew20

Welcome to the Pentaholics!! :) I'm completely in love with everything these guys do. As others have said, please check out "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Daft Punk," among others. Also, since you asked about other artists and said that you like acapella groups, please check out my boys that started in my state of Minnesota, Home Free. They are kind of a "country flavored" acapella group, but they do many genres. Their bass, Tim Foust, makes his home in that same subterranean range as Avi Kaplan, the bass you heard in this song (who is no longer with Pentatonix). Both are insanely amazing in that ultra-low register. Also, Home Free's beatboxer/human percussion machine Adam Rupp is flat-out not human. I suggest you start with my favorite song of theirs, "Do You Hear What I Hear?"...and then check out "Man of Constant Sorrows," "Ring of Fire" (featuring Avi Kaplan), "How Great Thou Art," "All About That Bass," and pretty much everything else they do. Have fun!!

Welcome to the new world of a capella. Pentatonix and Home Free have rewritten the book on a capella worldwide. All of the suggestions for more songs to listen to are great. Pentatonix has 3 Grammys, one for their "Daft Punk Medley" (Daft Punk), one for their" Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" (Tchaikovsky), and one for basically being Dolly Parton's backup band(?) on "Jolene". Also, try "Imagine" (John Lennon), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen), "Mad World" (Tears for Fears), and of course, any of their Christmas music. For Home Free may I recommend their "Man of Constant Sorrow", "Ring of Fire" (Johnny Cash), my favorite, "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills & Nash) (and then a quarantined Italian Youth Choir's cover of Home Free's arrangement), and of course any of their Christmas music.

Welcome! You have discovered the epitome of acapella music. There are other excellent groups but none reach the levels of harmonic complexity of PTX. I've been following them for years. Their voice control and range have developed over time just as their harmonies have. While their arrangements are complicated, they make them so that they can replicate the sound live. To see this, you can watch a live version of this very song from their live Christmas program on NBC in 2018. You literally cannot go wrong by simply choosing whichever of their songs tickles your fancy. You might consider "Amazing Grace", "Imagine" or "Sound of Silence", or, if you're a Disney fan 😉 "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". If you pause to comment with a certain frequency you can usually avoid being blocked.

For tears, listen to their Christmas original called "Thank You". Scott wrote it with/for his partner and sings the lead throughout (which is a bit unusual for Pentatonix as they almost always share leads), but it's the subtle harmonies of the group and the nostalgic/emotional lyric that brings out the tears.

Oh, definitely watch their first two Grammys (dance of the sugarplum fairy (that's Tchaikovsky) and daft punk, which was recorded completely at home in a 400$ budget).
Also, their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody is ridiculous! How have they done that??? You gotta watch. Imagine is a great cover too, beautiful video. They have a member change, this awesome bass leaves (his solo career is great), but the new one is also amazing and is in Sound of silence, another recommendation.
Do more pauses, maybe write something on the screen, so you don't get copyrighted. Their record label is annoying with this, but there are many ways to pass through this, every Pentatonix fan is used to it.
I'm honestly here just for their reactions from now on.

Brilliant reaction. Loved it. Top tip not to get blocked is to make the video you're reacting to 1/5 or less the size of the screen, and pause often. PTX videos are notorious for getting blocked, so its worth doing what you can straight off to prevent it.
As for suggestions - as a metal head you may appreciate Bohemian Rhapsody. As for anything else, go look at their channel and just pick something that takes your fancy. They have over 200 vids to pick from so you won't be lacking for choice.

Personally I would recommend The Sound Of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody, Can't Hold Us, Mary Did You Know, Amazing Grace, The Little Drummer Boy, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Mad World, Silent Night, and Say Something to name a few. They also have some original work you might consider, Love Again and Thank You, for a start. Check out some of their live performances and you will see they sound the same. And last, but by no means least, every person on the planet should check out their cover of Imagine.

This was the song that introduced me to Pentatonix as well...and I was instantly hooked! I've been a dedicated Pentaholic ever since, and I give them almost complete credit for getting me thru the pandemic and lockdowns. There are literally DOZENS of songs I could recommend, but I'll just say that anything you listen to from them will not disappoint!

Hi, Tauri. Have you heard of the new all-girl rock band from Korea called, "RollingQuartz" in their debut song Blaze? These girls are young and very talented!

Yeah, even though I have seen this video what seems like a million times now it still gets me everytime...The chills, emotions you name it. Thanks so much for doing this reaction. You might want to try their covers of "Silent Night", "The sound of silence" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" just to name a few. Oh and you also should try their cover of "Amazing Grace ( My chains are gone )"...You think you started to get emotional with "Hallelujah"? Wait until you hear "Amazing Grace"...Kirsten kills it on this one. You can't help but get emotional. But, it's fantastic none the less. Thanks again and we'll see you on the next one. I just subscribed by the way....Woooohooo!!!

Hi Tauri! Absolutely stunning. That’s PTX! Now that you’ve found them, I hope you’ll do more of them. “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Imagine” would be great. Subbed!

Thank you for the great reaction. Pentatonix are amazing and redefined what A Capella groups can do. They cover a lot of Pop songs, but also do original songs and Christmas songs too. For something completely different, try Daft Punk. For something on the same level as this song, try The Sounds of Silence, or Amazing Grace. Thanks again. Your reactions are always top notch.

Awesome reaction and Hallelujah is the perfect introduction to this band. They are out of this world. You will never cease to be amazed with what they can do. Avi Kaplan is the bass(my personal favorite) and was a member from the group's inception until about 3 years ago. He left due to health issues within his family and being burned out from non-stop traveling and working. He left the band on good terms and has his own solo career now. He also helped the group find his replacement, Matt Sallee. Please watch the live version of Hallelujah from their Christmas special (with Avi). I think you will be surprised and equally awed. This talented lot consists of 3 friends who grew up together in Texas, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi and Kirsten Maldonado. They wanted to compete on a television show called the sing off. Just days before the show they added Avi Kaplan (found him through a friend) and Kevin Olusola the beat boxer (from a performance video on youtube). They won first place on the show, received a Sony contract and lost it one week later. They went on to do covers on TH-cam and soon received another contract. They also have many original songs and they've won 3 Grammys. One was for Daft Punk(which is another excellent view/reaction for you), dance of the sugar plum fairy and Joleen with Dolly Pardon. Please start with the songs in the earlier days so that you can see the inception and appreciate who they are and what they've accomplished. You can also watch the sing off performances if you would like as well. Can not wait to see you dive in. so many wonderful songs/renditions are waiting for you. The fans(Pentaholics) are the best fans and will support you on your journey. Have fun!!! :)

Beautiful reaction. As much as I would love to see less pausing, i see other reactors get blocked a lot for these guys, so good that you did, and that rewinding probably helps too. I would recommend New Rules/Are you that Somebody? Its a mashup of two songs. Not my style of music. But why I love PTX is that they make me like anything, from any genre. Have fun reacting to more!

Welcome to PTX! If you liked this, you will also like their „Amazing Grace“ rendition and their version of „Sound of Silence“. There is, of course, much more: above all „Bohemian Rhapsody“ and their „Daft Punk“ Medley! Enjoy!

I love PTX, thanks for doing this reaction. Want some metal that's a little different? Checkout Band Maid; if you don't already know them, I think you will be blown away. They (5 members) are an all female, Japanese band that dresses in maid's outfits (don't assume anything); they are cute, little bad-ass musicians that will rock your world. I would suggest a start with Freedom (live), great crowd participation!

Daft Punk is the one that got the Grammy, the vid is amazing and that is spectacular for the performance, knowing it's all vocal, no other instruments. They do a nifty cover of Sound of Silence, and a great cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, where Mitch (the guy at the end who breaks you heart with his tone and range) gets to shine again. My personal favourite is a toss up between either their cover of Cheerleader, or their cover of AHA! by Imogen Heap.
If you like these it might be worth checking Voiceplay as well, they do great work (love their take of "Kidnap the Sandy Claws", and Home Free for more acapella goodness.
