    Tony Knowles was my
    Childhood hero
Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of weeks ago
What a guy, had loads of time for me and took the time for me to get some photos worn him and my daughter
They say never meet your heroes but I am so glad I did
    God Bless Tony Knowles
Even suggested we get a game of pool a f a beer next time I’m in the Lakes
Should have won the world at least twice

Ted Lowes voice is unbelievable, it never ceases to amaze me. I could watch these Classics just because of him. The other commentators are pretty good too!

Davis was 7/4 Fav for Championship , and 1/33 for this match, Knowles was 20/1

When Davis wasn't playing well, when he knew he was about to lose, he always looked like he was on the brink of tears.

It was one of the few times I wanted Davis to loose, I always wanted Knowles to do well, in same sort of way as Keith Della, way back when, thanks for this classic.

This was an amazing result but hardly a crucible classic ! How can the BBC have two weeks of crucible classic matches and not include Higgins vs White in 1982......ridiculous !

What I don't understand is, why were they wearing bow ties and evening dress for the first session, but then I realise, this was when the tournament began on a Friday, so they probably opened the tournament on a Friday evening. But for the past 38 years or so it's always started on a Saturday morning

Looking back at these great replays from the eighties,I forgot how useless Steve Davis was at getting out of snookers and also setting up snookers, and the amount of in-offs he had was quite alarming for a NO. 1player,be a run of the mill player these days against Ronnie, Williams, Higgins,Trump etc.

  • @andyb150

How did Steve play so bad? Ramming the cue tip into the white like a club player when desperate for the frame, looked like match fixing it was so unlike him!

Is this the original commentary? I have NO recollection of a female commentating?
Although I was 11 / 12 years of age then

Same thing I was thinking. I'm watching this on bbc2 now and I'm sure it is the original commentary. But I can't remember hearing a female snooker commentator in the 80s. I was only 6 in 1982 though.

Tony was 99-1 to beat Steve in the match, but every squirrel finds a nut every now and then, just fate, like Jimmy in the semis against Alex, should have won, but fate intervened, and Jimmy lost.

Long potting is better nowadays for most players! For some reason they refused and struggled with them back in the day.

Definitely or came really close. Even at 8-1 down Hendry would have been dangerous, and i think Tony would have had problems winning the last few frames he needed. Once the Hendry charge was on, hell on earth wouldn't stop him!

Far more exciting, lots of characters. Today's players are like robots off a production line. Started with Hendry, way back. Only one left that resembles the old school from snooker's golden years of the 80s is Ronnie. Today's snooker is paint drying excluding Ronnie.

This was the only time Davis didn't make the Final during the eighties after first winning it in 1981, that's how good he was compared to the others generally. Knowles played a blinder here.
