I cleaned and repasted my GPU, a thing to note is that you need to REALLY tighten the screws holding the heat sink down. My screen would go black if it ran anything slightly intensive. Turns out I used too much paste and didn't tighten the heat sink enough for adequate pressure. Also, buy proper thermal pads. 2x0.5mm thermal pads won't work as well as a 1mm thermal pad. Hope this helps someone out there

2 things no one ever mentions:
-Always try to detach the heatsink from the GPU core after you've heated the GPU (with a game or a stress test) so that the paste is not dry thus, easier to remove.
-Thermal pads can (and should) be cleaned with a qtip and IPA. Don't detach them necessarily, just wipe off the excess dust.

How do you find out what thickness of thermal pads you need before tearing it down?

The used GPU I purchased over a week ago finally arrived yesterday and boy is it dirty. Imma test that bad boy first, but this video is really gonna help me when it comes to cleaning it.
Good news is, that I at least got a $500 new GPU for $89 used so, worst case scenario, I've either wasted my time and I'll get a refund or I saved a lot of money and will spend some time and a little more money getting it back to proper condition.

Avoid ipa on plastics, it can make them brittle or prone to small cracks. Instead dish soap and warm water

i did an easy trick to get the heatsink off the die easily without force. I just ran a stress test on the videocard for 2 minutes just to soften up the paste before removing it

I gave one a bath once in my kitchen sink with a fine toothbrush and dish soap after it was given to me from a smoke environment. It had stains all over it... 91 percent alcohol sprayed on it only smeared the stains. Of course I wouldn't recommend doing it, as you'll need a air compressor with a air nozzle to get up under all the SMD devices really good, all ram and GPU included. Then air dry it on low heat with a heat gun and let set for a day at least. Afterwards all was good, card ran cooler and looked way better.

Question! You are using Thermal Grizzly's Aeronaut for the re-pasting, correct? I'm merely asking because I'm interested in so.

Awesome! I was looking for general advice on what to do with existing thermal pads if they were in good shape and you had it. My old RX 470 was having thermal throttling issues and after cleaning it over like in your video and repasting the GPU core, its running great now with the original pads. Thanks for the video and help!

i basically just dismantle the GPU and wash it with water. A lot of people say its bad and then have no explanation as to why. As long as you are delicate while washing it, the water does no damage. Also its basically the only way to properly clean it without an air compressor or blower, neither of which i have. Worst case scenario is that you wash it and cant properly dry it which may cause corrosion. However you'd basically have to leave it in a zip lock bag several days for it to be that bad.
