The Tiniest Little Cactus In Texas b/w Misdemeanor Brunch

  • You ever seen a cactus this small? Here's Echinocereus davisii and Escobaria minima - both are very tiny species growing on the #novaculite soils of West Texas, hiding beneath a layer of Selaginella ( aka spike "moss") in windy, dry West Texas.
Novaculite is a very "clean" and smooth form of chert derived from ancient, biogenic silica originally deposited in the form of muddy sediments in an ancient ocean. These sediments were mostly composed of the silica-rich sponges and single-celled organisms called radiolaria (one of my first hand tattoos, years ago). Ocean sponges produce spiny projections composed of silica called spicules as a form of defense from things that want to eat them. When the sponges and radiolarians die and settle on the ocean floor, the silica accumulates into an ooze which eventually gets lithified (compressed into a rock with the aid of lots of pressure).
The novaculite that's produced from the lithification of this silica-rich sediment almost resembles a very smooth, beautiful concoidally-fracturing porcelain, and it occurs in bands visible from the satellite photos. On the adjacent beds of metamorphosed limestone, Echinocereus davisii does not occur.
Other species here were Yucca torreyi, Selaginella sp. (no idea which one - the genus is epically cool but notoriously hard), Paronychia wilkinsonii, Escobaria minima (another tiny cactus), and Tetraneuris scaposa.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

Jack and Louie must just think Joey's mad screaming to himself at the ground.
A huge famous spaghetti restaurant was closing down in my home town [Brisbane], and they stupidly decided to have a rave party to celebrate. People went nuts wrecking the joint. At some point one guy came running into a room we were in, grabbed the fire hydrant and tried to spray his friend. He couldn't get it to work though he had opened the base tap, so he dropped it and ran off. Despite my friends telling me to leave it, I went it turn it off and put the hose back. Of course, at that moment a security prick walked into the room...

Got 86’ed from a Chinese restaurant when my Chinese-speaking white friend (who wasn’t eating with my group, he just happened to be there at the same time) showed up drunk as hell and thought it would be funny to start loudly cussing us out in Chinese. The waiters heard, took photos of us and told us to leave and that we weren’t allowed back. My friend that yelled at us ran away before the waiter came so he didn’t get kicked out, and hilariously he didn’t even remember yelling at us when we asked him about it the next day

I got 86'd from a bar in Oakland when, while highly intoxicated, I ripped the lock off a piano and started playing it. I tried denying I ripped the lock off but the guy said he was watching me the whole time. After leaving the bar I found a phone book on the ground, across the street from the bar, I looked at it and then tossed it without looking and it went through a large plate glass window belonging to a business, at which point I got the hell outta there.

In the late 80s, Brewster Co was the hotbed of horticultural material. The owners of a large ranch in the Marfa/Marathon area was tearing out tons of the native vegetation, and someone got the idea to sell the plants to retail nurseries. The result was them providing large yucca and to nurseries all over the US - including my employer in Virginia. The vast majority of these plants ultimately perished in areas with unsuitable conditions - mostly too wet.
We lost many large plants in the Nusery due to being under irrigation - it was all new to us.
In addition to the Y. torreyi featured here, they also supplied Y. carnerosana and what I believed to be Agave scabra. They were not horticulture oriented and could not give or verify botanical names.
The most outstanding contribution to come from this company must be Yucca rostrata - the Queen of Yuccas. Y. rostrata proved to be the most adaptable and winter hardy. This yucca and it’s varieties can now be found across the US and Europe. It is considered hardy to USDA zone 6 and is growing in a protected area at the Denver Botanical Garden.
Two years ago, a hurricane took down a 20ft 4 headed specimen that I planted in my parents Virginia yard in 1989. I have two specimens in my Seattle area landscape these days.
In addition to the big stuff, you could also get Resurrection Fern - Selaginella lepidophylla?, which I believe is the one that you featured in this video. I’m sure they scraped a ton of them off the desert floor.
After a few years I heard no more of the ranch, and I can only assumed they stripped their real estate of everything they could sell

As a senior in high school, I worked at a Pioneer League baseball stadium picking up the trash in the stands after a game. While picking up trash one day, I noticed my boss chugging beers from a club booth, open beers from the night before. Gross, right? She locked eyes with me. I kept working, but an hour or two later I got 86'd because she informed the club that I was stealing stuff from the stadium. Who are they going to believe, the visibly drunk adult or a hapless introverted teenager? They chose the adult. 25 years of laughing about it, so I guess that it was worth it. I hope she found help.

Me (and my bus) got kicked out of Vancouver BC after I’d lived on Kits Beach for six months. Nobody’s ever gotten to live on Kits beach again - it went all yuppie and then some.

Here's my 86'd story, I remember getting drunk at a park playing basketball, decided to hit up the bar after and see that it's trivia night. The bar started playing trivia and I proceeded to yell out ever answer and got 86'd for ruining the ambiance 10 minuets later.

Sadly, the bouncer was unimpressed with our offer of mother/daughter favors to let us stay. Missed a damn fine show!

They were still kicking people out of NCO clubs in the 1990s. I went with a friend for lunch and we got kicked out because she was wearing shorts. It was Okinawa. It was summer. They also kicked people out of the commissary for wearing flip flops.

Shmoe has never and Toad quit shortly after I did. After the show, Jr ghosted off into chicago and we had to leave back to spring valley without him. He claimed he got mugged, but I didn’t buy it.

I slap it, thinking it would be a cool idea, and in no time there was a huge guy "WTF!!!" the dancefloor opened the guy punch me once, security comes and kicks me out. I felt so Stupid LOL

Got kicked out of the local middleschool for skateboarding in their very nice hallways. Got kicked out of a house party at an establishment with marble floors and $3000 designer dogs because I got too intoxicated and struck several guests with a foam bat. Was politely asked to leave a very tasteful wedding on a golf course who had failed to protect their buffet from my advances. I've been a scummy ghoul on many occasions... Anyway, there you have it. I proved I listen to the whole video. You're welcome.
