Cactus Rescue Jahb

  • In this episode we take a look at some of the habitat slated to be destroyed by the coming border fence, as we head out to rescue and relocate some Rio Grande Barrel Cactus, #Hamatocactus sinuatus, that will be leveled in the coming months. Everything that lies between two pink ribbons tied to stakes and spaced 200' apart is going to be bulldozed to make way for the clearing on either side of the border wall.
    Tamaulipan Thornscrub is already an endangered ecosystem and habitat type. We briefly explore some of the members of this unique plant community on the Rio Grande.

    A few years back, when a border wall was first announced, I was immediately concerned for the native ecology of this remote landscape. Thank you for showing us and documenting this unique area before the bulldozers arrive. You know, REAL government projects require an environmental assessment and an archeological survey. It's obvious that this wall project was pushed through and around the necessary red tape required to build our national infrastructure.

      You've got the first part: interest.
      Next, observe, read, research & find others who want to share their knowledge with you. Sadly, the more you know, the more watching natives get destroyed hurts. I'm constantly amazed (& annoyed) at how people don't even TRY to find out what things are or how they work in an ecosystem. When I started to study native plants in Georgia, you had to buy books & many were not region specific. With internet access, ANYONE can snap a picture & get an ID. inaturalist is a great app, since finding it, I've used it a lot. Enjoy your discovery process!

    Good work! Nice jahb finding the coreids too. I was very curious to know what was feeding on the cacti when you first mentioned it. The nymphs look like Chelinidea vittiger as you said. That adult is Leptoglossus sp. judging from the hind tarsi. C. vittiger don't have expanded hind tibiae and their antennae are triangular in cross-section. We get western seed conifer bug, L. occidentalis, here in WA and about a month ago they started coming indoors to overwinter. People always ask me about them but they're a native in this part of the continent, not an invasive species. Looks like they're present in NM as well, so maybe that's the adult you saw. Or possibly L. clypealis, but I'm not an expert😅

      We need to agitate to make it stop. Sleepy Joe has no clue about all the various fuckery afoot. These road construction would tear it all out today despite needing to stop tomorrow because a contract is a contract. A federal injunction or something needs to be pushed through. A new admin does not magically make all the fuckery reverse itself.

      @olgakuchukov6981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The cactus needs a habitat. Whatever Tony dug up will grow back or can be replanted IF there is a habitat for it. That’s not an issue. The fact that he rescued the cactus, made a video and now a few more people are aware of the fuckery is a huge good.

    Cactus doesn't care about your opinion, and cactus won't care about your reasons. You can hug a cactus and it won't care. You can bulldoze a cactus and it won't even agree to disagree with your methods. And that is why cactus deserves a chance: cactus won't hate you or try to change you or even lie to you. Cactus has spines that threaten with great equality all those who would forget the nature of this universe. For those who neglect the cactus, remember that the cactus won't care when we are gone from this planet either.

    How can we agitate the incoming administration to halt this destruction? I understand the contract is already in place and those guys would tear it all out today even if they knew they had to stop tomorrow (generalization based on past and current experience with road construction crews). Is there any way to slow this down and then push the new admin to stop the wall building? Is this a fed or state project?

    Would it be more viable for me to take plants or seeds from my native area? Would it be illegal to do so? I really want to start cultivating more natural flora - I loved your video on the longleaf pine forest, since I lived there when I was a kid and now I’m in a completely fucked suburb. I already planted a couple of Yaupon which are probably my healthiest plants besides the loblolly and redbud tree. If I wasn’t moving out eventually, I’d fight my neighborhood on tearing up the centipede grass, honestly.

And im wondering how does one go about finding out what natural ecosystems are being designated for destruction and can save as much as i can from being destroyed? Any websites, forums, anything at all would be really appreciated. We all have to save what we can.

Probably, not because they'll rush it through. :/ Like the little Celtis, we have some diminutive species in the midwest as well, they specialize living on rock outcroppings and ledges.

    Good to see that you guys are doing something for cacti on your side of the border, here in mexico conservation laws are shit.
    Basically here in mexico you can just stop a whole construction program if you get in and find some native endangered species growing in there. Sounds fucking great but that just means that companies will destroy and bury alive any endangered flora in their land just to avoid getting in trouble.
    We also arent allowed to rescue anything, if you find any flora in danger you need to notify the authorities first and, let me tell you, most of the time they dont do anything or wait for too long so the specimens are already covered in concrete by the time they decide to check on your case.
    They also see species like lophophora as drugs so authorities dont actually care if they go extinct, they only care that you arent in possesion, they cant even be grown for conservation purposes, only for investigation and after the process is done the specimens are killed most of the times (or given away in an effort to keep them alive at least illegally).
    I have also sent evidence of plant trafficking to the authorities and most of the time they just tell me that its basically not enough to have the location, screen caps and names showing the process so my evidence is invalid. But yeah they did got me into their list.
