Tree Cacti and the Iguanas That Love Them

  • Much thanks to Grupo Jaragua for their work to restore and protect the habitat and community of this Cactus Forest near the Lago Enriquillo lowlands. To learn more please visit :
    www.grupojaragu...
    In this episode we trek around the Southern Boundary of a lowland, inland lake with water that is saltier than the ocean, home to American crocodiles and endemic #Cyclura iguanas. Two species of large cacti here - #Consolea moniliformis and #Leptocereus paniculatus (initially misidentified as #Dendrocereus undulosus, which appears in a later vid) dominate the landscape here, which sits atop an ancient fossilized reef.
    Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
    Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

    I like having the geology explained, too, it really helps complete the picture. In fact, it's thrilling. I remember reading the old James A. Michener novels which often started out by explaining the geological origins of his settings (like Hawaii). That really excites me for some reason. Of course, I don't get out much.

    You're sitting way south of the contintental transform boundary there. That fault is still very active. The formation of this range is a valley formed by the smashing of mountains there causing an uplifted basin sort of like the great valley in california. It's because the transform boundary isn't exactly slipping, it's a squishing-type of slipping. That causes some uplift, folding and faulting. It's happened at least 2 times on that island because there are 3 orogenies. I suggest investigating the really nice alluvial fan to the northwest of the center of the lake if you can. You'll find some very interesting plants.

      @CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's quite a long East-West fault right on the lake that extends all the way to the mid-cayman spreading center and on into Mexico, which is probably why the lake is there and why it's 150' below sea level. Such a deep basin isn't caused by nearby orogeny. A very cool area. Wish I'd got to spend more time in the serpentine areas though.

    • @loganbabcock6179
      @loganbabcock6179 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not him, but he’s talked about taking plants out, which is poaching. He’s fervently against it, and prefers it in its natural habitat where it has a better chance to grow and be an integral part of the ecology of the land. It’s also not just the plant itself, but the story behind it and the adventure you have in getting to it that makes it special and taking those things away to hoard is awful.
      What he does, though, is a lot of times he’ll grab seeds of the plants, spread half, keep half, germinate (“humility dome”) and donate them to local arboretums and what not.
      Long winded, but I think Joey agrees with me.
