JJM is one of my BJJ heroes. I am a purple belt and I have a knee that only bends 3/4 of the way closed. It is a huge hindrance in so many positions. It hinders my guard passes, knee on belly with that knee, and some sweeps and butterfly guard is a total no-no for me. BUT THIS MAN WON A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH ONE HAND!!! There are no excuses, and BJJ is a game where you can always find another sweep, pass or sub that works for you (me). JJM reminds me that there is always another way.
Incredible...JJM was on the bottom almost the entire time, and yet he was the one constantly attacking, going for submissions...he is really one of the best in the world. Hats off to Arona, the guy is an animal.
Although Arona won it was a great exhibition from JJM of how to handle a much bigger guy who is clearly no slouch. Would love to know what they both weighed.
Arona was in the 99 kg weight class, i'm sure. The question is Machado's weight, since in 2001 he only competed in the absolute division. In 2000 Machado was in the 77kg division, maybe he was a little bit heavier. What you think?
That omoplata attempt was one of the best pieces of jiu jitsu I've ever seen, having watched the last 4 years ADCC and seen many a match of Garcia, Jacare and Roger. I'd say that if he transitioned to holding Arona's back down a second earlier he may have finished it, but I wouldn't want to second guess JJM. The guillotine attempt was also awesome. It's a pity that Arona is such a fantastic jiu jitsu guy and an incredible physical specimen.
I completely agree with you, JJ was like more accurate in his attacks, but seems to me that Arona was constantly in better positions, more agressive and JJ was more like "only defending", but, you are right.
Truely Impressive :) I've been following R. Arona ever since this impressive show against Fedor, and he was 13kg ligher than Fedor at the time. The Machado brothers are almost overshadowing the Gracies on the other hand.. . I say (with my limitted knowledge of course) that my prefered grapplers at this moment are Ricardo Arona, JJ Machado, Edie Bravo and Ryron Gracie.
I'm not sure exactly if it's the last 5 or 10 minutes of a match (because I don't remember if matches are 10 or 20 minutes.) But they don't score until the last half of the match. The rule is in place because it encourages people to go for the submission. Example, if I'm in your open guard, I can either pass or take a leg lock. This rule encourages that I go for the leg lock, rather than try to worry about points. Some styles like Sambo will take a leg lock over the pass like in BJJ.
Point systems vary by competition (ADCC, Grappler's Quest, NAGA, Mundials, etc.) and the year. I don't know ADCC 2003's EXACT rules. In ADCC, they only score the last 5 minutes of the match. You get a certain amount of points for takedowns, sweeps (going from bottom guard to top position), passing guard, and attaining side control or mount. I think Arona won by getting side control. Machado had many attempts, but never had position. You have to control positions for a few seconds.
@SCROGY thank you for sharing your story. i have a knee that locks. if i move it quick enough it locks up and i have to push down on it to unlock, a little painful. but like you said there is no excuse. thank you.
wow. incredible JJ only lost by one guard pass against such a larger, skilled opponenet. if arona was JJ's weight the fight would have probably had a different outcome. so much respect for JJ machado. insane technique
I mean whether you or anyone else believes it o not, isn't my concern. But yeah, you're right. He is very respected, I didn't really start caring for the politics of the sport or art til recently so thats why I'm asking around. Make Sense?
nah, not new to it. But I'm new to the whole rubber guard ideal. I'm stepping away from the Gi game so I picked up Eddie Bravo's book and he talks about Jean Jacques quite a bit.
thats was awsome rolling, that Arona is a steamtrain, but i still think machado is the superior roller, in my personal opinon, wicked vid, sad music choice
interesting, makes sense, but it would also encourage more guard work since gettin g passed isn't that big of a points concern, if i can escape well and have good defense I might save energy and have a better chance of submitting too.
sempre gostei do estilo do arona, agressivo, boa base, explosivo e boa postura mais nessa luta nesse momento a diferença de técnica entre eles éra grande. o arona se valeu da força física e explosão muscular para levar essa luta....minha opinião
im aware that im replying to a 2yr old comment but it sounds like your knee has a meniscal tear. i have the same thing, stops me from doing correct form in bjj. but it can be corrected with surgery and ready for you to use fully within 6 weeks of the operation.
@BIGthingsSON yeah and plus like at this level of grappling, strength and weight would be a huge factor, a good example would be jacare vs roger gracie, kinda shows both are amazing ass grapplers but if that one competitor has a little edge in something that the other does not, he'll have a better time pulling off his game.
@Microverse1 i agree but Arona has plenty of subs dude, props to Machado for avoiding them. But to say that Arona wasnt going for anything is incorrect, these guys are just that good man. It aint easy to sub a guy like JJM whether you are Arona or not. But the argument you are making for MMA is damn sure correct I agree with that 100%
@BoxKickboxMMA Im not complaining that he didnt sub Machado. I am complaining that he didnt even try, and still WON. This is a "submission wrestling" competition, attempt a submission. He was affraid to attempt subs because Machado is a better, and would have reversed and gained a dominant position (which Machado would have actually used to finish the match.) Its just my opinion, and Arona is not the only one. Kerr and others used to dominate just with position also. That is NOT "martial arts."
@spurious you get what you pay for. my gym is a John Machado affiliate, it is a little more expensive in compared to others in the area but it definitely worth the price.
@BoxKickboxMMA No... he didn't. He took the back, but never attempet a choke. At one point he had over under control from the back, which if you aren't really paying attention could look like a choke attempt. But if you watch closely he NEVER ATTEMPTED A SINGLE SUB.
@Microverse1 And its not that Arona is not good (he is very good), its that Machado is better, and the rules allow Arona to win anyways. Machado = better grappler, Arona = better at using the rules of ADCC competition to his advantage.
@everydaywarriors Yeah he is really good, i liked the battle vs Emelianenko, He could have won but he didn't. If he would only train to connect more hits combined with his strenght, physical, condition and grab, he'd be a better fighter on MMA.
@sang9768 Yea strength/ weight was a big factor here. Plus Arona seems to have the base of a god damn D1 wrestler. Imma start working my overhooks ect much more after watching this video.
KingSygma I think Arona is stronger and really good... But Rickson at his best was FENOMENAL. Rickson is a waaay smarter fighter and his control of his body is insane. So I bet on Rickson.
CallmeMat I concede that in an old school grappling bout (no time limits, no points, etc) Rickson would have much more opportunities, but in an ADCC bout Arona would probably handle him by playing safe and win by points like he did against JJM.
KingSygma I agree that Rickson made his name by street fighting.. But his jiu jitsu skills are undeniable... He perfected everything he learned. And he learned from the man. So I really don't know. Arona is great, but Rickson... Is Rickson.
yea, he was. but still an amazing grappler. Eddie bravo adopted a lot of no Gi techniques from him because JJ couldn't grab on to ppls Gi's with his left hand.
i agree with your comment about the change of music, very poor choice to change it from the drums hahaha. (no hard feelings to the guy that composed the vid)
Jean Jacques is my inspiration. I watch this over and over. this is the jits I love!
una delle migliore lotte di grappling, mi ha inspirato molto questo video, che scioltezza, fluidita, forza, e agilita.
Arona= muscle bjj. JJM= pure bjj. To the core and soul. Killer flow.
Although Arona won it was a great exhibition from JJM of how to handle a much bigger guy who is clearly no slouch. Would love to know what they both weighed.

and on steroids
Arona fighting for points, JJ Machado going for the kill
PED's played a major role on the fight's result
+philcinephile Lol. Good point.
Great highlight reels don't need anything to enhance it.
The mastery of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is enough.
Machados are fantastic grapplers. Much respect.
when both guys are that good, it's tough to deal with those roids if you're not.
7th degree Red and Black belt in BJJ with only 6 working fingers...
@Microverse1 This is one of the best and most intelligent posts I have seen in a while. Anywhere. Kudos.
Jean Jacques is the man. He is the Marcelo of the last generation. One of the most exciting grapplers to watch.
I completely agree with you, JJ was like more accurate in his attacks, but seems to me that Arona was constantly in better positions, more agressive and JJ was more like "only defending", but, you are right.
Truely Impressive :)

+Alexander Hranov Check out Marcelo Garcia if you haven't seen him yet... Awesome to watch...
+GH51505150 Marcelo is classic. I've even got a book by him. Eddie (my idol) thinks highest of him and JJ Machado i gather..
+Alexander Hranov I like eddie too. I have 2 DVD's of his.. Mastering the rubber guard and the twister....
Very impressive to say the least... I love your choices BTW...
Alexander Hranov Jeff Glover is an entertaining guy to watch
JJ machado is truly amazing! great inspiration!!
I like Machado a lot now.
and I have a mountain of respect for him as well.
Muito bom e sempre legal ver caras assim bons!
salve galera que goste de artes marciais!

Nice vid, its good to see the Machados getting recognized out of the shadow cast by the Gracies.
Point systems vary by competition (ADCC, Grappler's Quest, NAGA, Mundials, etc.) and the year. I don't know ADCC 2003's EXACT rules.

JJ Machado is amazing. Just an absolute freak.
@SCROGY thank you for sharing your story. i have a knee that locks. if i move it quick enough it locks up and i have to push down on it to unlock, a little painful. but like you said there is no excuse. thank you.
Na moral ricardo arona para mim é, lenda viva .. nunca vi o cara perder .. atropelo todo mundo no adcc .. ricardo arona lenda viva...
Jean Jacques is a stud. nice vid.
Arona using alot of bomba before this figtht
They both did awesome.
i like bjj, but i´m not familiar with the moves, so how did this score come?
Machado seemed to be the more technical one in this match. I love the way he moves. Arona was playing the wrestler here instead of the BJJ artist.
that was awesome, machado is incredible, good choice of music aswell i though
Jean is an awesome grappler but his brother John is amazing the way he can move around someone.
What an awesome technical roll...
Grappling Rickson X Arona ?
I'll believe that. I love BJJ but man can it get real boring sometimes. How long did the actual match go for???
Jean Jaques is one of my heroes.
Good video - but why did you replace the cool drums at the beginning with the terrible rock after 10 seconds? Bad call there.
We Machados Have a Strong will!! keep on CUZ
And I agree with you, I think anyone would prefer Machado as a teacher, his story is an example.
Roids are not forever.
parabéns jean jacques...já fa do arona, agora sou teu fa também.
wow. incredible JJ only lost by one guard pass against such a larger, skilled opponenet. if arona was JJ's weight the fight would have probably had a different outcome.
so much respect for JJ machado. insane technique

nah, not new to it. But I'm new to the whole rubber guard ideal. I'm stepping away from the Gi game so I picked up Eddie Bravo's book and he talks about Jean Jacques quite a bit.
The written form of it in portuguese is Machado, but here in Brazil we say it kinda like you wrote, but the 'cha' here sounds more like 'sha'.
i'm not into that, but i know that hard work can get you far.
what is the name song?....
PLEASE HELP ME....
WHAT IS THE NAME SONG?
thats was awsome rolling, that Arona is a steamtrain, but i still think machado is the superior roller, in my personal opinon, wicked vid, sad music choice
What kind of stupid system is this? Machado put Arona in trouble several times, Arona was just outmuscling Jean the whole match.
Great fight. JJ loves his butterfly guard
What happened to Machado left hand?
interesting, makes sense, but it would also encourage more guard work since gettin g passed isn't that big of a points concern, if i can escape well and have good defense I might save energy and have a better chance of submitting too.
JJ came closer than anyone to beating Arona in this match.
excellent match!
whats the name of the brazilian song at the beggining
sempre gostei do estilo do arona, agressivo, boa base, explosivo e boa postura mais nessa luta nesse momento a diferença de técnica entre eles éra grande. o arona se valeu da força física e explosão muscular para levar essa luta....minha opinião

i dont understand this game!!! how do you win points in this game?
Machado is one of my first inspirations
Arona won, but based on weight difference, if both are equal, JJ would clean the floor with him.....even so respect for both fighters.
JJ is severly outwieghed. He is a technical freak and an amazing grappler. Good match, but arona is too big.
OMG i just looked at his hand when i saw the comment. was he born like that??
okay, now i understand it, thx for telling me.
alguien podria explicarme..si son familia con los gracie?
please
prime example of how stacking protein and horse boosters helps out a little bit.
Great fight!!
Jean Jacques all the way
@Microverse1 i agree but Arona has plenty of subs dude, props to Machado for avoiding them. But to say that Arona wasnt going for anything is incorrect, these guys are just that good man. It aint easy to sub a guy like JJM whether you are Arona or not. But the argument you are making for MMA is damn sure correct I agree with that 100%
machado should have gotten 1 point for that oma plata
I agree...
Probably because he's a great teacher.
BIG respect to JJ Machado ;-)
@moonrunrs Thanks man. Peace.
I noticed about 3 mins in he machado uses the omoplata as a control position, i bet its where eddie got it from...
whats the music?
machado asi muy tecnico y bien luchador bravoo
@matwizard What's up with his hands?
@BoxKickboxMMA Im not complaining that he didnt sub Machado. I am complaining that he didnt even try, and still WON. This is a "submission wrestling" competition, attempt a submission. both great
how old is jacques??
@spurious
you get what you pay for. my gym is a John Machado affiliate, it is a little more expensive in compared to others in the area but it definitely worth the price.
I think the original abu dhabi music was pretty good
@Garuda1337 OMG! grappling with one hand in an adcc final against, what seems to me a much bigger guy, is incredible.
i admire this fighters!
post the whole thing, without the special effects
That's a damn good question
That's was intense.
@BoxKickboxMMA No... he didn't. He took the back, but never attempet a choke. At one point he had over under control from the back, which if you aren't really paying attention could look like a choke attempt. But if you watch closely he NEVER ATTEMPTED A SINGLE SUB.

I juts noticed JJ has a crippled hand, any story to that?
jj machado is a true technical master.
A physical beast vs a technical beast
i watched this video at least a hundred time but it is just now i noticed machado's left hand.
@everydaywarriors
Yeah he is really good, i liked the battle vs Emelianenko, He could have won but he didn't.

Yea strength/ weight was a big factor here. Plus Arona seems to have the base of a god damn D1 wrestler. Imma start working my overhooks ect much more after watching this video.
did arona ever grapple rickson gracie? and who do think would have won
I met him once, we're from the same city. He's cool as shit. He's a monster by the way.. A fucking wall of human meat. ahahhaha
+danomento Personally I would bet Arona by points.
KingSygma I think Arona is stronger and really good... But Rickson at his best was FENOMENAL. Rickson is a waaay smarter fighter and his control of his body is insane. So I bet on Rickson.
