Dean Lister, also known as “The Boogeyman”, is a professional grappler who is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Jeffrey Higgs who gained notoriety within the BJJ world after he won the 2003 ADCC (the world’s most prestigious submission wrestling/Nogi event) in the open weight division. Dean Lister also has a background in wrestling and experience in Sambo and ventured through MMA competing in important organizations such as Pride FC and UFC. The Boogeyman started in his early MMA days fighting for KOTC (King of the Cage organization). As one of his opponents injured himself before the fight, Lister was left with no opponent, and due him being a big name in the grappling circuit it was extremely hard to find a replacement, people did not want to fight him. Because of these, he started being called the Boogeyman.
Jean Jacques Machado is a legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitor and instructor. Regarded as one of Carlos Gracie Junior‘s top students in the 1980’s, a status cemented with his wins over several important grapplers of his generation, including grappling and mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Wallid Ismail at the Copa Atlantica tournament in Brazil. Jean Jacques Machado continued his good form after he moved to the United States to open his own academy, winning years later the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC).

This is a easy 30 lb weight advantage for lister who competed comfortablely at 220 vs jean at 169 In his prime lister was a recking machine on the mat. The true beauty here is watching Jean who escapes the boogyman from back control an defends himself masterfully from bottom. Its all the little things that take place here that many folks miss which makes this great. Don't need to be flying around doing cartwheels to be awesome 💯

While not the most entertaining match from a spectator point of view, it is a brilliant one to watch/study from a technical point of view. To see Dean's pressure top game( not something he is known for but still possesses) against one of the best butterfly guards in history is a real clinic in how to pass and work against that style of guard. Also, watching Jean Jacques ridiculously good butterfly guard/overhook game is a real treat as well. This match is a masterclass of in both aspects of guard passing and guard retention.

Ground fighting, for me, has a place and time. But I know I'm not a pure ground guy because even though I can appreciate great skill. Boring comes to mind. BJJ helped me win many Cage fights but to solely focus on one range and exclude the others is not a rounded system. It has it purpose, and it is but a fourth of the ranges of combat. Kicking, Punching, Trapping and Grappling. To focus on one and exclude the others, no matter how effective you are in one range opens you up in 3/4ths of the fight possibilities.

I don’t disagree but if you can’t grapple you can’t really fight. I mean that in the most respectful way possible because I have great respect for many styles of martial arts. But if you’re a strike based fighter you’re in for a world of hurt if someone gets ahold of you and you don’t know how to at least escape or get back up. Conversely you don’t need to be a black belt jj guy or a high level wrestler to get ahold of someone and that’s enough to throw off a very good striker. The fact is that fighting is by its nature chaotic and the ability to grapple well gives you a way to control the chaos.
I trained from the time I was 9 and started with wrestling in school and then after highschool started BJJ and Muay Thai. My brother is a Kyokushin Black Belt and one year on new year’s we got kinda drunk and decided to put on an exhibition in the front yard for our friends. He discovered a rather helpless feeling when he got clinched and on the bottom of my mount. Of course he’s my brother so I didn’t beat him, but he went on and earned a purple belt in BJJ after that.
I’ve had 20 fights, along with some street encounters and the guys who couldn’t grapple were completely fucked. Their only chance was to try to knock me out before I could get a clinch. Once I get a clinch it’s my choice on how I want to proceed. I can be vicious and lay a beating or I can be nice and finish with a choke.
Only one guy ever gave me real trouble and he was a high level wrestler. I couldn’t keep him on the ground and he’d stand back up to throw bombs.

It was supposed to be Lister versus Ricardo Arona, who beat Kerr in the superfight in 2003 and held the superfight title. But Arona was fading by then. JJ was magic in his ADCC showings, except for that Renzo fart, so he was on a short list. That was the year the superfight pattern of having the absolute winner face the superfight champ was broken.
