2001 seems like just yesterday. definitely still had a late 90s feel to it. I don't think that went away until like 03.
I feel the same way! I feel like the first 2-3 years of a new decade are just an extension of the previous decade. That explains why people still wore bell bottoms and Afros as late as 1982 🤣🤣🤣
I watched footage of the 2003 NYC blackout the other night and it looked like it's taken from the late 80s lol

It’s chilling to see the “Happy Easter” tag near the prices. It is hard to think it would be the last Easter before 9/11. In just a couple of months, that horrible day was going to take place. Just sad and creepy..
Take me back! Yes the prices were lower, but what a lot of people are missing is the shrinkflation! The M&Ms bags they showed were 14.5 oz. The "Sharing Size" bag today is 10.7 oz! The Breyers containers were half gallon (2 pints), now they're 1.5 pints! And today a lot of Breyers flavors are "frozen dairy dessert," not even legally considered ice cream! 🍨
And this was a high price supermarket back then...

@@smadaf I remember that! They've been doing this a long time, but it's gotten so much worse recently. Some of the stuff at the Dollar Store is a joke now, looks like it belongs in a dollhouse!
We entered the millennium with so much hope and promise. But after 9/11 it's never felt the same, just sort of hollow and unreal. Sure you move through each day, each year, and you have some moments of happiness and you make plans, goals. But the magic trick doesn't work anymore. With each year we see more of the mechanism behind the illusion of modern life. But we remain in the audience, clapping anyway, because we've nowhere else to go.

kinda the same with this decade. we entered 2020 with high hopes only for it to be ruined by covid-19. 2019 was peak humanity.

your channel is the closest thing we'll ever get to a time machine, thanks a million for these awesome videos!! i was just around 1 year old during this time (my memories begin around the age of 3 years old.) it's so fun to see what stuff was like around the time i was born, i often wonder what it would've been like being the age i am now living back in the 90's and the early 00s (these videos help my little daydream of time traveling!)😂❤️
sidenote: who else was DROOLING over the ice cream isle, i think ice cream packaging was way more enticing back then LOL!

The ice cream back then looks so much better than it does now
It was Breyer's big marketing thing was all real simple ingredients and now most of their flavors are anything but. Breyer's was just about 3 ingredients.
A lot of the looks of those products haven't changed much over the years. Yeah, I notice things like that. A change of a logo, a change of the font, etc. And those prices though. I heard Safeway's prices were/are a little on the high side. Ugh, now I want to go back and enjoy those years of the mid 90s to the mid 2000s again.
Food ingredients have sure changed, though, and not for the better. I, too, would like to go back to the late 1990s- when food was food and not chemicals!

The cookies, candies and ice cream are about the same price as they're these days. I think it's just Safeway. I heard it's always been pricey.

@@WolfenEXE the prices really aren't that different, but a lot of the packages today are smaller and a lot of the ice cream at the store is classified as frozen dairy dessert these days instead of real ice cream.
Amazing! Perfect video, love grocery stores. I was going to comment about the premium ice cream being very expensive for 2001, but another commenter pointed out it was 2 pints instead of the 1.5 we get today, so that makes a lot more sense.
100% this was filmed at a Safeway back east. The Edy’s brand is not sold in the western US, it’s sold under the brand name Dreyer’s. 2:38

They went to all my favorite sections growing up: cookies, ice cream and candy! Bonus points if they would've went to the cereal section too. But I love this! I was 7 years old in 2001 so a lot of these labels are very familiar. Also forgot about Reeses Sticks, I haven't seen those in years

Sad isn't it. I used to love cheese nips and actually preferred them over Cheeze its. My mother always packed a small snack size with my lunch to school.
One thing I like about these videos people are actually shopping and not walking around talking on their phone's. They not getting in each other's way and you don't have to hear their conversation either.

Dream prices.
Everything was so much cheaper back then. If I had a time machine, I'd stock up on a two years supply of groceries, then bring them all back to the present.
honestly, some of these prices have barely gone up. for 22 years, some of these things have pretty much only gone up a little over a buck, which doesn't seem insane. I can still get Goldfish for less than $2 if a good sale is running, the cookies/ice cream/candy aren't much more either.
Those aren't as high demand as other things. For example Kroger brand ice cream for me is 2.50, has been for years. In the winter it sits. In the Summer it flies out the freezer. 6 packs of Kool aid bursts went from $1 to over $2 and they can't keep them stocked. There's no reason to inflate prices for things that sit for months at a time.
The time when Safeway was still independent, years before it became a part of Albertsons. I don’t live in one of the states where there are Safeways, but I do live in a New England state where we have Shaw’s/Star Market (both also Albertsons). Nowadays I don’t shop there as much (just occasionally) as I used to before, instead frequenting Market Basket where it’s cheaper than both Shaw’s and Star Market.
I’m glad Market Basket is still independent like the old Safeway portrayed in the b-roll video, and I hope no other company acquires the private chain. It’s a great and decent New England grocery chain with a lot more options (especially Market’s Kitchen, a deli) than Shaw’s/Star Market. Almost like Publix in some ways
