Beautiful era in life in America.Miss it
I shopped at TG&Y as a young mother in the 1970s when I moved three blocks from one. It had all the general merchandise I needed for my family, my household, and myself, all at reasonable prices. It had fabric yardage, kitchen stuff, baby clothes, etc. I feel that the old "five and dime" stores of those days were much better with better quality merchandise than today's "dollar"-type stores. I miss TG&Y, Kresge, Woolworth and W.T. Grant stores.
We also had White Front and Ben Franklin where I grew up---in much simpler times! Going to the lunch counter in Woolworth "downtown" was such a cool treat.
@@AllieinCali Thanks for reminding me about White Front! I can't remember shopping there, but I seem to remember more seeing their commercials on TV.
I too loved the lunch counter at Woolworth's. It was a short drive from my home in the 1970s. I would take my son there, we would have lunch (usually hot dogs or grilled cheese sandwiches) and then shop for whatever small items we needed. On the sidewalk outside the Woolworth's entrance door, there usually was an old blind man sitting on a folding chair playing an accordion, and we would leave what money we could in the tin can on the ground next to his foot. That Woolworth store was much bigger than my neighborhood's TG&Y. The Woolworth store had more (and larger) windows, higher ceilings and brighter lighting inside; the TG&Y had smaller windows, lower ceiling and the lighting was not bright inside. Both were good stores though.

Oh definitely! I bet if we look through our homes, we can find one object we bought at TG&Y or one of the others you named. I go to dollar stores, but it's a lot of cheap imported stuff, most of which I pass on.
My gosh, I haven't thought of TG&Y in years, I remember Christmas shopping there with my mom. Your videos are a memory lane for me!

All stores seemed to smell good during Halloween back then.
I guess we missed this in Ga. Would've liked it in NY area. Would Woolworth's been similar? We had them, Woolco, Grant's, Kmart, Richways (now Target here), and Walmart. We used to have a Ben Franklin and a MJ Designs, but now just have Michael's Arts & Crafts-where I worked while in college-and Hobby Lobby (also arts&crafts).

So many of the cars in the photos would be worth a bundle today if it were in great shape.
One last thing: IIRC, when we lived in Louisiana, TG&Y is where we got school supplies. I still remember the *BIG CHIEF* writing pads.

I remember going to TG&Y in the mid 70’s, going straight to the toy section while my mom shopped.
I went right to the candy section!😂 Couldn't get around it if I tried. It was right there at the entry door to the store.😊
This hits close to home, literally. I grew up in Oklahoma and there were T.G.&Y.’s all over. Just like the others have mentioned it was a gold mine for kids. Models, fish, birds, school supplies, crayons, toys, Halloween costumes, decorations and candy. Clothes, some housewares, slot car sets, all kinds of stuff. Good prices and good quality. They even had car parts and repair. For years there was a large T.G.&Y. In OKC on north May Avenue. The parking lot always had a lot of cars. In grade school my friends and I rode our bikes there to get toys, candy, games, models and cap guns. In high school my girlfriend took my Mustang there to get a glasspack “muffler”. Years after college I went there to buy a ball and toys for my dog. I also drove my VW Rabbit there to do an emergency fix. T.G.&Y. had so many things and I never heard of anyone complaining about price or quality. So here’s another example of someplace so many of us have warm, fond memories of, but was ruined by a merry go round of corporate sales and “restructuring”.
As a small child I was told it stood for Toys, Guns, and Yoyos. I believed it until my grandmother went to work there and she straightened me out on that! 😂
My dad told me it stood for Turtles Girdles and YoYos. Lol

Ahhh..the TG&Y a quick walk from my house as kid (we called it the “Dime Store”). TG&Y piqued my interest in model building early on as they always had a huge selection.

Yes, I rode my bicycle down to TG&Y many times to get a model kit.
Much love for TG&Y. That company put food on the table for my family, when my dad was a store manager in Tulsa in the mid-80’s. ❤️
I remember shopping with my mom at TG&Y back in the 80’s. We loved the one at Sheridan Village and of course we shopped at one at I believe 41st and Garnett. Such a great store. I really do miss them.
@@TheChoochooboy99 The 41st & Garnett location might’ve been the one my dad worked at… at least that rings a bell. We definitely lived in the neighborhood just up the road from there. I went to Briarglen Elementary in 6th grade, then a place called “the 7th grade center” the year after. Then we moved to Wichita the next year. It’s a crazy small world; thanks for giving me the chance to revisit some things I haven’t thought about in years. 🙂

I used to get my 45s from there. If I couldn't find what was looking for I went to a place called Galaxy Records.
As kids, we always referred to the store as Turtles, Girdles and YoYo's because they carried EVERYTHING. At least it was everything you needed back then.
I remember they sold piranhas at ours….real piranas!!!!

Back in those days, stores had more merchandise packed into a small store (by today’s standards) yet today’s Walmarts are 3-4 time as large yet always seem not to have what you need on the shelves! Its really no wonder that online shopping is hurting them. No selection, no value ... no reason not to order online!

It's sad how many of these chain stores disappeared as Wal-Mart and Target expanded. It's amazing K-Mart stayed around so long.
As a mere child in the early 60's, I often shopped at TG&Y in Odessa TX, thinking it was a staple of America...how innocent and simple Life was in those days. Thanks for bringing these memories back.

I forget they had pets! That's where we got our two parakeets, hamster and guppies. Wow! Was buried in my memory until just now.

I loved TG&Y! We had three of them, within two miles of the house, when I was growing up. Great store, I would love to go back in time, and visit them again.
I was an assistant store mgr for 3 years in mid 70’s. Good memories
This takes me back. I remember going to tg&y in the late 80's early 90's. The store had arcade machines in front. So, every friday after school. I would go to TG&Y buy a bag of reese's pieces,a coke and play the games. TG&Y introduce me to neo geo and forever change my life. So, now when I play a neo geo game it forever reminds me of TG&Y
Back in the day, we were in a TG&Y a couple of times a month, until we moved to an area that didn't have one. It was, and remains to this day, one of my favorite stores to get lost in, along with the old Gemco stores.
My family shopped at the TG&Y at Chickasha, Ok for many years. I guess until it closed. We occasionally shopped at the big TG&Y off of I-240 in OKC for Christmas. It was huge, and for some reason had 3 different floor levels. My wife,(girlfriend at the time) worked at the Chickasha location during the mid 80's while she attended college at USAO. Last year I was looking through some old photos and found a small TG&Y bag with my mother's senior pictures inside. What memories! Thank you!
I remember that store in OKC. Loved going there. It was huge in comparison to others. I grew up south of Chickasha and remember the TG&Y there too.
the one in OKC was billed as the largest, I lived 8 blocks away, at 65 now, that was a long time ago, at the 5 minute mark on this video I believe that to be it, was a full city block long

I remember one of my brothers stealing a wooden airplane from the toy section. It was the kind that you put together. This was in the Mustang, OK. store.
I remember buying a Gumby Toy at a TG&Y with my own money. The toy was $1 and I had 100 pennies. 😊
My grandma would take my brother and I to TG&Y in Park City, Ks. in the 70's. I remember her buying 8mm movies or at least small snippets of movies with no sound. Very Nice Vid!!!

Not only are the TG&Y stores gone but most of the shopping centers where they once were are now lined with resale shops, payday loan & bars if the shopping center is there at all. They did have a great selection of ATM 1/24 scale model cars & supplies in mid to late 60's. -Tulsa, OK.

Holy cow! I forgot about these stores. There was one in my old neighborhood where I grew up and I think it went under around the late 80s or early 90s and never heard of them again...till now....lol. Thanks for the memories!

I worked for TG& Y from 1968-1974. Started out as stockboy. Went to Asst. Mgr., and finally got my store as Mgr. in San Antonio, Texas. (BlancoRd. & West Ave). Met my 1st wife in the fabric dept. as I was sweeping the floor before closing time in March 1970 at the Capitol Plaza store in Austin, Texas. After being transferred to San Antonio after i graduated high school, I would make the drive from Nacogdoches Rd & Loop 410 to Capitol Plaza on Saturday night in 55 minutes for a date to the Chief Drive In. Would not want to try doing THAT now. Great memories. Been over 50 years since those days.
I grew up in the city of Lakewood, California in Los Angeles County in the 1950s and ‘60s. At the super-regional Lakewood Center there was Butler Brothers, Woolworth's, and W.T. Grant, but no TG&Y.
that pic of the TG&Y store next to the Safeway grocery store bring back memories when we would visit my grandmother and aunt and uncle lived 3 houses apart older neighborhood of Argentine Kansas outside kansas city Kansas coming from rural Iowa to visit that neighbor hood awesome memories i am 45 now all them stores and people are gone now and neighbor hood.
I loved TG&Y and it was my favorite store! Sure do miss it.
As a girl learning to knit and crochet, I remember looking at and buying yarn at TG&Y in the early/mid 1970s. I don't remember what year it closed, but it made me a little sad when it was gone. I loved going in there after school to look around. Good memories!

The drug store with the cafeteria counter that made the very best hamburgers and dogs, those string fries and the best malts money could buy. Buffums, Bullocks, Broadway. AND ALL-YOU-COULD-EAT AT -
SHAKEY'S PIZZA ! OH boy those drive-in movie theaters - where kids would flush cherry-bombs down the toilets, the kids playground right-up next to the screen, - two people would pay - then after parking on those little hills, - the rest of the guys would pile-
out of the trunk, - those tin speakers that hooked on your windows (those crummy speakers had pretty good sound. 'I wonder how many of us were created behind steamed-up windows in those theaters'.
The canteen food was awful - but it always tasted great - you were having so much fun. Those old dope-pushin
vans (those vans were great). OH God those twenty year old pizza slices.

dried-up, burned, that took three people to chew - at the end of the feature(s) not even the homeless could have eaten one of them - you couldn't hammer nails with them (the nails would've broke. The cartoons, and those korny adds for the snack bar.

Califonia here also. Gemco... JJ Newberry, White Front, Handymam, Bonanza, Rexall, Pacific Stereo, Grant's, S&H green stamp store, Akron -the furniture and home store, and the earliest I can remember is Gem which was located in San Jose. Really miss those days. Edit, forgot Shakeys pizza
I grew up in Sacramento, home of the original Shakeys's pizza. It is a historical landmark and has been several restaurants since it closed. The original neon sign is located in Golden One arena, along with Tower records, etc. We still have one of the few remaining drive ins, too. Lots of stores have come to pass, including College-Hi, Chess King, Anita, Foxmoor, Handy Andy, Farmer's Market, Grants, Woolworth, Woolco, Ben Franklin, etc. Zody's was here (in the old White Front building ironically) after Gold Circle came and went. We lost a lot of these stores to "Price Club" (now known as Costco), Sam's Club and Wal-Mart. But, we have the memories!
I remember A&P back in the 1970s in Brooklyn. We often shopped at the West 9th location between 6th and 7th Avenues. We then shopped A&P in Louisiana in New Iberia and Belle Chasse. I think the last A&P I set foot in was in Wayne, NJ, about 1990 or 91.
I always liked going to TG&Y; they had a big toy section and records I actually wanted to buy as an adolescent. (I bought my first AC/DC album there.) Altogether we had three local stores, and the downtown one had a lunch counter right up to the time it closed in the late '70s. The last store folded in 1986.
I loved that store
Sometimes when the FAA sent my dad and his co-workers to Oklahoma City for tech classes, Mom and I would go up and stay with him in his rented apartment. TG&Y was one of the stores Mom enjoyed visiting. I remember they had a good toy selection.
You brought back some fond memories. We used to shop at the TG&Y in the late 70's and early 80's in Rohnert Park, California.

@Sebastian I lived in New Iberia, in SW Louisiana, for a time in the late 70s. For non-food shopping, it was TG&Y or K-Mart, and they were close to each other on Admiral Doyle Drive.

The first TG&Y that I remember was in Freeport, IL in 1977. It was more of the department store variety. Our mom bought our school supplies there. We used to joke about what the initials stood for. She came up with "Tough Goodies and You". Later when we moved to the suburbs of Kansas City, there were a few TG&Y stores there that were smaller, more like 5 and dime stores. I think they all ended up closing in the early 1980's.
Bless their hearts, they tried to compete with Walmart, and they put up a valliant effort, but when Walmart came into central Oklahoma, TG&Y was gone within 5 years. The big TG&Y's had almost as much variety as Walmart, for example, they had a great record section, toy section, home and garden, and auto center, but as good as they were, they just couldn't compete with Walmart. My town had a "little' TG&Y and a "big" TG&Y. The little one was sort of like a drug store, only better
Loved our tg&y in Kansas City Missouri... Go there several times a week sometimes to get school supplies or craft supplies for school ... they had just about everything we needed LOL Penny Candy they had the best Penny Candy ... Angora yarn that you would wrap around your rings ... or weave into a tiny braids on your long hair ... very sad that they're all gone .... and yes we just called it the dime store ...
We had one in London, Ky when I was a kid in the 70s.
My first TV set was a white cased, black and white counter model bought from TG&Y. It actually had the TG&Y logo on the front bottom corner. However, I don't remember who the actual manufacturer was. I carried it from room to room to get the best reception. Good times!
My Father Ronald worked for TG&Y in the 70s and 80s. He was a General Manager. On Saturdays I'd go to work with him half day. Play in the toy Isle all morning then watch cartoons in the break room. Good memories.
Every other week when my mom took us shopping, I would use my allowance to buy albums at TG&Y; Kiss, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, I even remember buying the Heavy Metal soundtrack there. Ah, classic vinyl.
I remember a TG&Y from when I was just a little kid. It was in Westminster CA, and was between a Build N' Save hardware store and Blinky's Pizza.
We had one in Covina off of Covina Blvd. and Grand Ave. right next to Rexall Drugs and Alpha Beta supermarket.

I remember this TG&Y in Midwest City, Ok. located at SE15th and Midwest Blvd. at 5:20 time stamp. I would walk to this store as a kid in the 60's. Brings back memories.

I remember tg&y back in the 60s and 70s. Walmart and k mart buried them. Too bad.
When I was expecting my youngest son I worked at a bank next door to a TG&Y. At break time I would walk over and purchase “red flavored” Saf-T-Pops (lollipops with the soft curled handle) as many as they had at one time since I craved them all of my pregnancy.

I remember this place! Growing up in the late 70's and early 80's in Fontana California until we moved to Texas in 85. Tinny Christmas ornaments and toys plus ice cream cones! Bubblegum flavor was my favorite!

Walmart came in and put a lot of the TG &Y stores out of business in the more rural areas. I always enjoyed shopping the T G & Y fishing supplies if I found myself in a small town and wanted to go fishing.
Today, the only stores I can think of that are close to the TG&Y type are DOLLAR TREE and DOLLAR GENERAL/FAMILY DOLLAR. I could say BIG LOTS, but the fact they sell furniture makes them different.
The last time I saw a TGNY was in Quincy, Florida. This really does bring back so many memories of my childhood. Thanks for the memories!
TG&Y Family Centers were larger-format stores than the original TG&Y variety stores, with a wider array of merchandise. The three founding partners hailed from different Oklahoma towns: T. from Frederick, G. from Cordell, and Y. from Kingfisher. A TG&Y warehouse was the first development by Oklahoma Industries, a for-profit subsidiary of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce which was key to OKC's economic development efforts.
Those were the good ole days!
When I was young in the late 80s-early 90s there was a TG&Y and a Thrifty (complete with ice cream counter) where I lived. I know Thrifty ice cream is technically still around, but I wish both store brands were also.
The thumbnail pic must have been from the early 70s. Plenty of what are now considered classic cars in this parking lot, in their prime back then. I like that Beetle and that Country Squire parallel parked in front of the center.

We had 2 TG&Ys in Santa Fe NM when I was a kid... 1972-1985. They just disappeared, but I'll always remember shopping there with parents. Along with a Grand Central department store.
TG&Y was just down the street from us and I would go there often to spend my lawnmowing money on model cars and planes and the evil Testors model glue that would make you woozy if you didn't open a window while using it.
I remember they had an old style candy counter where they sold jellybeans by the pound.

I was a kid in the 70s and a teenager in the 80s. We had a Kmart and a TG&Y in the suburban area that I lived in about a mile from one another. I loved TG&Y the most but I will say I did love the popcorn and icees at Kmart.😍😍😍
My father-in-law was the CEO of TG&Y and just turned 93 yesterday. He left when McCrory bought it. He loved working there, many fond memories, great employees.
My youth was no Walmart but TG&Y was EVERYTHING. BOY do I miss that place .
