The Language Debate - Hindi Hain Hum?

  • The Hindi vs English row recently hit the civil services exams as aspirants said the UPSC is biased against Hindi-medium students. On We The People, we debate: Is English a must-know language to be a bureaucrat? And is English the language of elitism or economic mobility?

Do not split India into south and north in the name of language. English is the best for progress and prosperity. Make English a link language so even the world can be linked.

I am a Kannadiga. The only languages I know are Kannada and English. I don't feel necessary to speak any other language in my state. I will surely learn Bengali When I stay in Bengal. Similarly Tamil - Tamil Nadu, Gujarati- Gujarat, Marathi- Maharashtra, Kerala- Malayalam, Odisha- Odia, etc etc.... Hindi has got nothing to do with us. It should be learnt only in Delhi, UP, MP, Bihar, etc.

I don't want to use bad words.
(They are available in millions on the net.)
You must know that Hindi is NOT the national language of India.
It is one of the official languages.
I only asked for English subtitles.
I love India, too, but only as a Tamil.
If you do not know how to live with 80 million Tamils, then Tamils will be shocked to know it.
India is built on the idea of "Unity in Diversity".
Any attempt to destroy this diversity will backfire to create chaos.

Hindi is not the National language of India there 23 official languages Hindi is just one of them. English is also the official language of India.Tamil is the oldest living language of the world, older than Sanskrit and even Hebrew.Bengali is the second most spoken language of India. Imposition of non-mother tongue resulted in violent language movement in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, India as a republic would implode if anyone tries to force the non Hindi speaking people to adopt Hindi. Hindi as we know is not spoken by 42% Indians, since Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab,Goa, Puducherry, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir,Bengal, Odisha, the entire South India and the North East India do not speak in Hindi.English is a better and neutral option for national integration.

    INDIA has no National Language
    Learn English & State Language.
If you go to any other other country you learn the language of that country. You have no problem there.
Why? when people from Hindi Speaking regions go to Non-Hindi Speaking states demand the locals to speak Hindi rather than leaning the local language.
Will they accept of a Non Hindi speaking person goes to Hindi States and demands them to speak his language will they accept?
Remember, India is a country of Regional Languages , Hindi is one such Regional Language.
All languages in India are Indian Languages no one is less or more.

We strongly disagree with these comments from the honorable Home Minister and forceful prediction on us with Hindi. Our mother tongue is Telugu. Our South Indian languages reflect with thousands of history compared to Hindi. If Hindi people don't learn and don't respect our South Indian languages why should we learn Hindi? We strongly object from entire South India. If needed, we prefer Sanksrit & English as the Unified languages, but not Hindi. We suggest the Government to concentrate on the Economic development, unemployment, increasing literacy rate, terrorism and so many other problems, but not these kind of emotional and sensitive issues. Government is trying to impose Hindi on us slowly and forcibly by placing Hindi in SBI Website and all other Government Websites also. We don't agree this. Simply our entire South India is against Hindi.

As long as India remain one country, any other language cannot replace ‘English’ as official language.
The national freedom movement relied largely upon English language in order to reach out to non-Hindi speaking areas which was 2/3 of India including Bangladesh and Pakistan before Independence.
We cannot altogether stop using English as official language. British Rule has efficiently replaced Sanskrit and Urdu during their rule of more than 200 years in India. They have left India during 1947 Indian Independence but their legacy still being continued by way of Constitution of India, Parliamentary Democracy, Law and Justice, Administration, Defense and Space program, Research and other fields.
Hindi is an under-developed mixer of Sanskrit,Urdu,Persian and other local dialects which cannot in anyway replace English.

I recognize that less advantaged people will find it harder to learn English but this is not a problem that can be fixed. Either their isn't a lingua franca(which could impede the process of government) or the lingua franca is a local language of India in Which all speakers of that language will be inherently advantaged over all others and this could lead to or increase social divides and may even cause eventual language death all while the only people who can learn this established local language are the people who could have afforded to learn English to begin with. But instead of all the speakers being on equal footing as non-native speakers the native speakers will always have the advantage no matter how much training speakers of other languages go through.
India should probably do what America did declare no national language until a languages dominance becomes incontrovertible, if it ever happens at all.

If Sanskrit is the Mother of Languages then Tamil is the Grandfather.
There are many word that sanskrit took from Tamil
Pooja - it means Poo - Flower, sei - to put
Nirmala - Neer - Water, Malar - Flower or group of flower.
Himalaya - Himam - snow, malay - mountain
    Narthan kai - Orange
    In sanskrit Naranga
    In greece auranga
    In english orange
For mother in Tamil - Amma
    in Sanskrit - Matr
For Father in Tamil - Appa
    in Sanskrit - Pitr
I do Agree that Sanskrit Contaminated Tamil by creating languages like Modern Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Singhala.
You know that fact Tamil Brahmi dates back 10,000 yrs.
Its doubted to be an Harappan Language.
Because 5000 years back Aryans not even entered India.
Even the God Vishnu and Shiva where Dravidian Gods...
    They had a darker complexion.
When Aryans entered India, they have to accept Dravidian Gods because Nobody was will to accept their God i.e Brahma.
That is the reason why we still dont worship brahma. but we accept him as a god.
Aryans considered themselves as brahmins and started divide and rule system, in the matter of Castism.
They named themselves as brahmins as the name of their god.
And bought all European system and mingled their stories with Hinduism,
Below are the Greek Gods and parallely Indian God:
    Zeus/Indra, Athena/Saraswati, Ares/Durga, Aeolus/Vayu, Thanatos/Yama, Hephaestus/Agni, Gaia/Prithvi.
I do agree that Aryan created famous Epics.
They started adapting Dravidian culture and history says that aryan and dravidian crossbreeding happened.
Now there is nothing called Aryan and Dravidian.
    But fact is fact.
How come people compare 2500yrs old language with the 10,000 yrs old Tamil.
Recent studies say that Kannada is much more older than Sanskrit.
Still the native culture of india is all is in South India.
Shame on these Peoples provoking Sanskrit as the Oldest language.
    They are altering the history.
Dravidian's might have got separate Nation.
    Thank You.

I really feel very guilty now for not learning kannada instead has learned hindi wch I am not using anywhere in my place.
Even I feel der should be only 2 languages in every state, one should be english and other should be regional language and der is no need for 3rd language which vl keep a person burdon.

none of them are talking about what is essential but everyone there cares about status and identity. Even the solution to make a Indian native language compulsory along with English does circles around status.
Question is really simply, against anyone who asks for their own language to be national language, can our country as a whole benefit in world market given constitution and other general works written / spoken in your language. And why is it hard for you to learn other language but not for them to learn yours?.
And if everyone is having difficulty in learning a new language then let's all face this problem together, let's all learn a new language and communicate with it, one which could not only unite us but also help us in long run!.

There are so many languages that learning every language is not possible. Me as an Indian would like to see hindi as a common medium without suppressing any regional languages. North and South should not fight as both of your communities are different side of the same coin. Both of u have cliched ideologies as all north indians call all southies as madrasis and all southies calls all the states otehr than the 5 states in south india as north india. Both of u guys should understand we are one country and there is no point in fighting over a language. Dont be proud of any language it is just a mode of communication and nothing more. Hindi without any fuss should be used but once again i would say all the regional languages should survive as well. As far as Apj kalam he could speak in hindi while addressing crowds in delhi. Nobody is asked to forsake their language but just practice a language which we all learn since we are kids from even watching movies. And if you think that ur particular language is the best being it from north or south there is one language Which we people of bengal speaks will put all of india to shame if we start bragging about the achievments nationally or globally.

Varshini Krishnan Nobody is imposing anything. If anyone wants to study hindi in school govt should disallow that. Than what is the point of right to learn in India. There are north Indian states who speak there own language but can converse in hindi. First of all expand ur knowledge about North India or for any other part of India. If you cant answer a simple question in a simple manner than dont try to justify something which comes across as arrogance from tamilians.

When we go to a foreign country and we speak to each other in English, British people think that we do not have a language of our own; Europeans think it is funny that we talk to each other in a foreign language.
We must have a National language. Sanskrit should be the National language. As it is difficult for everyone, none will feel bad.

    • @suryavajra
      @suryavajra 8 ปีที่แล้ว

The script would need to be simplified though, as much rests on the written word. In particular you have the conjunct consonants. If you can go to an alphabet, then everything can be written in a finite set of characters.

    • @DipakBose-bq1vv
      @DipakBose-bq1vv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

If the Chinese can revise Kanji, Korean can get rid of Kanji by devising new set of alphabets, a revision of Sanskrit is not impossible

    • @suryavajra
      @suryavajra 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Dipak Basu Yes, something that can streamline it. Maybe cut down the number of characters used to a manageable number. While I do not think having a national language would be a good policy, I do think if there is a continental script system in which all of the languages can be transliterated into, than people can readily learn other languages. In learning any language, what can be most intimidating is the challenge of reading and writing a new script. So in my opinion, perhaps before learning the actual script of any of the individual languages, there can be a continental script that can help people more readily and rapidly learn. This can work for Sanskrit, Hindi Tamil or whatever other language.

Both of these languages are used only in sign boards on roads and none of these languages are spoken by local Population of Singapore. When I said we are forcing Hindi to Tamil Nadu. Why should I? I am multilingual and appreciates all languages. I am not a linguist.
However, recently I came back to study more about various languages. Indian languages are very well developed in literature and follow the same alphabet schema 90% of the time. Tamil, Malayalam, Karnataka uses many common words but write so different (Why?.) Telugu, Karnataka and Sinhalese are written very similar but spoken differently (Why?) .
Tamil is the sweetest to hear and then Hindi. Malayalam writings have best flow without tiks, dots, dashes and slashes.
English lacks two key alphabets (A~ and AU) and that creates many spelling errors.
