Welcome to Kent! I use this service often, between St Pancras and Broadstairs via Ashford (or via Herne Bay which is a little cheaper but slower). One of the best sections (as you saw) is the bridge over the river Medway, the trains run parallel with the M2 motorway, the road traffic looks as if it is stationary as the train whizzes past! The other really noteworthy section is between Folkestone and Dover on the slower historic line where the trains run between tunnels with a short section of open air running alongside Samphire Hoe, an outcrop of land built with spoil from the Channel Tunnel. On HS1 these trains run at 140mph, slower than the Eurostar trains and this can create issues as Eurostar does not like the Javelin trains forcing the international train service to slow down. Ideally they should be upgraded to match speeds! These Hitachi trains date back to before the Olympics in 2012 and are rather grubby so the refurbishment is much needed. Brighton beach is all shingle, so is Deal beach. Thanet has lovely sandy beaches, Margate, Broadstairs & Ramsgate and some of the secluded coves between. When you pointed out Dover Castle then panned across and saw the ferry, and on your clifftop walk it was just possible to see the outline of the French coast on the horizon. I am not surprised you picked up the French telephone network, you wouldn't be the first person to do so!
The 3 day Kent Rover is brilliant value at £30 with a railcard, £45 without, travelling after 9:30, Monday to Friday, valid for 3consecutive days on Southeastern trains only
Congratulations On 20k G, Great vlog, I’ve ridden with Southeastern but not on there Javelins along HS1. I would love to explore more of Kent and see the White Cliffs of Dover at some point. I have been to Margate though. I enjoyed watching as always.
I used to ride the javelins out to stratford international every weekend in summer 2012 as they were accepting travelcards, presumably for ease of getting crowds to the olympics. Now you have to buy a dedicated Southeastern High Speed trains ticket for quite a chunk of cash
Yes! I thought about doing a combined Paris and London trip using Eurostar to go between them but that was scrapped. But I am going to London and Eastbourne in July! And I’m going to go from the airport to Eastbourne by train 😊

I've only ridden on a Javelin once, Stratford Int to St Pancras. But I have done St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord on the Eurostar, so I have done all of HS1. Still need to do Ashford Int and Ebbsfleet Int tho, as well as all other stations served by the 395s.

Somewhere east of the castle I believe is where Louis Blériot made a rather...crunchy...landing in his aeroplane in 1909 after the first ever powered flight across the Channel. Such an awesome trip! It’s so cool to see the cliffs of Dover from the top side! 😎 And a hairy muff next to the seaside is a must because of the wind 😂
For six years i lived 10 mins walk from Ebbsfleet station and was spolied with a 22 minute journey into St Pancras. But the really impressive run is in the opposite direction from Ebbsfleet to Ashford which is at full speed - 140 mph - with no stops. Even if you had a super car, you'd take twice as long - and that's with motorway virtually the whole way too! Used to go from my front door to the Ashford designer outlet, have brekkie or lunch, and be back home in under two hours - with a bit of shopping too!
Great video, beautiful scenery, such a contrast from what it must have been in WW2. As we approach Anzac Day here in AUS it’s hard not to imagine the scenes there in the war and all the brave soles we lost. 🦘🇦🇺
What a really enjoyable video & Im so glad you liked your walk & Kent. If you ever get the chance to be down that way again, its an interesting journey along from Ashford to Hastings Bexhill & Eastbourne through Rye with some lovely coastal walks in Hastings Country Park, or near Beachy Head. Equally but a lot further afield is the fantasic coastal train journey from Belfast to Whitehead Co. Antrim with an equally amazing coastal walk at the end. Or in the other direction from Belfast to Bangor Co Down by train with wonderful coastal paths out from Bangor.
Very cool fast train that Javelin. . .!! I like the engine line. 😊👍 And very impressive long walk to that very Famous place you took us, which even inspired a beautiful song: The White Cliffs of Dover ♥️🎶🙏 Thanks for the Ride.
Brilliant video G, I've never been on a Javelin, my dad has but only as far as Statford when he went with a friend to see the Paralympics in 2012 whilst I unfortionately had to go to school. I have been to Dover though, in a car. It's possible to see France from the whitecliffs ona nice and sunny day which I was fortunate enough to have and it was so awesome. :)
Great review/exploration! The walk to the South Foreland Lighthouse looked good (must do that when it's not blowing a gale). On that east side of Dover, the castle is worth a look too - and in the other direction, the rail route to Rye and Hastings.
Fantastic vlog, G! I'm glad I recommended the Javelins for you to try out! I went on both refurbed and unrefurbed when I was down in London, I was massively impressed, and staff were lovely! Hopefully we'll see you ride a refurbed one soon!

Kent is a lovely county to be if I'm honest. Me and my parents went for a holiday to the south of England, having our entry along the magnificent White Cliffs of Dover. A nice place in Kent is the little village of Westwell, about 4 miles from Ashford. There is a very interesting church(St. Mary's) which is depicting all generations of the medieval English Gothic style.
@@GLovesTrains your videos are very professional and high quality I have to say. You need to explore more around the Southeastern network and take a trip maybe to Hastings as well?
Great video G. Just a pity the weather was not at it's best for you, it is an interesting and historical coast but you need several days to make the most of it. My daily commute was from Folkestone to St Pancas so got HS1 daily. It was of course quite expensive but it made a huge difference for us cutting the commute time by 30mins each way. My first time going on HS1 was shortly after it opened and it really was quite exciting. The other thing I should mention is that they run on the Eurostar line and when working normally they are more or less always on time al least when on the HS1 line.
Yippee G finally goes to Kent!! The bridge at just after 3 minutes is the one near where I work (Medway Bridge M2) - looks like you had a cracking time in Dover also!!
I haven't been on Eurostar out of St Pancras yet, but I did go to Paris a couple of times and to Amsterdam from Waterloo. It was interesting tiptoeing across Kent on the "legacy" line then coming out of the tunnel with full power and going from 90 mph up to nearly 200! I had been on the TGV a couple of times before, Paris to Geneva and Paris to Marseil. That was in the 80s and was amazing. If you can, go to Paris in 1st Class. Just like being on a plane!
I motorcycled down there with my bestie a few weeks ago, we also got the 'Welcome to France' text when having a cuppa at Samphire-Ho! Not mainline rail related but I wonder whether you got the chance to see the narrow gauge line that runs nearby from Hythe to Romney?
High Speed G, especially after your Spanish high speed as well! Was expecting a rendition of the famous white cliffs song to go with the walk. Great path on the cliffs though and love the lighthouse. Pity not enough time for the castle, but it might have taken a while to go round it.
Ahh my local line! The route you used is great for looking at boats and is much more popular, but personally I love the route to the south, where way you see the SEML running under the cliffs, Samfire Hoe is an amazing place to watch trains as well.
great vid! i went there last year. helped relived those memories. Getting back was a pain though from that light house. You gotta just walk all the way back
This is a great service into Kent but low figures are probably down to the price. Not cheap but takes half the time to Dover, compared to the classic routes. Used it a few times from Stratford - Ebbsfleet to pick up the E* but those days are sadly no more, I'd wager.
Another great vlog, full of summer flu and you make me smile quite a lot, keep it up,GLovesTrains needs to be on prescription better than any medicine from any Doctor for this flu xxx
When I rode HS1, I went to Canterbury as I'm trying to visit every city in Britain and the weather wasn't great for Dover (it rained). Definitely worth a visit, as it has similar vibes to York and Lincoln with a stunning historic city centre. However, I'd definitely visit Dover next time round, as I didn't expect it to look this good.
@@GLovesTrains ah that's nice to know; is it the best place to feel like you've gone to France without actually going to France? The coastal views, French bilingual signs and actually being able to see France itself must really drive that home I bet.
I understand that they aren't actually that reliable and availability isn't all that great (from a poster on WNXX whos a railway journalist), this wouldn't surprise me given their recent history with the IET's.
Small correction. The station for the Olympic Park is Stratford International, not Ebbsfleet. Nice video though. There is no British phone signal along parts of those cliffs which is why you got connected to France. Could be expensive if you don't have a European wide tariff.
I was looking for my self at London st pancras International since I'm sometimes there 😄 that beach is nothing compared to Brightons beach, you won't find any sand there 😅 Update for you though, you might or might not remember back in your blackpool video I said in the comments that I will be going to Blackpool one day, and I did last weekend 😊 and I got myself the vegan fish and chips you got too, still prefer the ones no catch in Brighton but still enjoyed them 😊
@@GLovesTrains cool look forward to that future video 😊 and I'll look out for myself if I'm down there at the time 😄 if you need reminding it's opposite side of the road of the i360 tower down some steps. Be interesting to see what you think. Yep Brighton beach is pebbles pebbles and more pebbles. You'll have to go pretty close to the sea to find some sand 😂
You really got a text saying welcome to France? without leaving the UK? I've been to St Pancras when I was travelling to London whilst I was staying with family in rutland. Was on East midlands meridian and they have noisy engines, my seat was directly over the engine.
Interesting fact about HS1 from my many occasions of driving it on Train Sim World is that for the High Speeds sections of it, the track and signalling are the same as the ones used in France to make the journey all under the same system and conditions so this technically means that the High Speed parts are actually a French railway as opposed to being British Regarding what someone said about Brighton beach and having no sand, I'd recommend a trip to Brighton beach to ride the Volks Electric Railway, it's a unique train line and not long but the other end of the line is next to the where the nudist beach is and while that could be the ultimate place to do the "Knickers on your head" and "Squishy boobies" it's definitely not worth trying it in April lol, Too cold!
if you dont like stoney beaches dont go to folkestone as much as it is a nice place the beach is entirely made out of stones and the beach is on a embankment and if you go down to the water its a little hard to get back up lol
Never been on Eurostar? I feel like giving you a free ticket. If/when you manage to get 25k subscribers I will if you still haven't been on one yet by then. Btw, there's this really nice path between Dover and Folkestone as well. I'd recommend walking it whenever you're there. There is this little footbridge on the route from where you can film passing javelins as well.
Great video G! Never been to Dover but do want to explore more of Kent, but the views were epic
Thanks Cyber! I wanna explore more of Kent as well - it was very friendly down there!

Ah sounds wonderful!
That looked a very enjoyable trip. Thank you
Very enjoyable indeed!
Hello G great content thanks x
I motorcycled down there with my bestie a few weeks ago, we also got the 'Welcome to France' text when having a cuppa at Samphire-Ho!
Not mainline rail related but I wonder whether you got the chance to see the narrow gauge line that runs nearby from Hythe to Romney?
Haha who knew you could walk to France and no I didn't 😂
High Speed G, especially after your Spanish high speed as well! Was expecting a rendition of the famous white cliffs song to go with the walk. Great path on the cliffs though and love the lighthouse. Pity not enough time for the castle, but it might have taken a while to go round it.
Ye was pretty knackered after walking back 😂
Ahh my local line!
The route you used is great for looking at boats and is much more popular, but personally I love the route to the south, where way you see the SEML running under the cliffs, Samfire Hoe is an amazing place to watch trains as well.
Sounds great! 😄
Looks like you had fun G.
great vid! i went there last year. helped relived those memories. Getting back was a pain though from that light house. You gotta just walk all the way back
Ye haha so windy on the way back 😂
France?! Your in dover lol!! Lovely white cliffs and them Javelins are fast indeed but not like the ones in Spain
Haha ye can walk to France down there 😂
Great video!
Thanks!
Congrats for hitting 20k subscribers g loves train
Thanks!
If you want a stony beach, try Brighton!
I'll have to!
Great video your such a legend! 😊
Thanks!
Welcome to the Javelin club 😋 Shame no c2c trains were caught on camera on the way down 😥😜
Haha yay I'm in the Javelin club!
Aw thanks hope you feel better 👍
@@GLovesTrains Worst night was last Tuesday still managed to work did my shifts for the week!!getting better stronger thank you for your concern xxxx
Enjoyed my time there and everyone was very friendly 👍
@@GLovesTrains ah that's nice to know; is it the best place to feel like you've gone to France without actually going to France? The coastal views, French bilingual signs and actually being able to see France itself must really drive that home I bet.
Hey gg hope you’re keeping well love you to the moon and back sending you lots of hugs ❤❤❤❤❤ xxxx
Bracing ! Great walking the White Cliffs Super.
Thanks 😊
The Class 395 Javelin are one of a kind high speed trains since Hitachi have built them over 10 years ago and are still as reliable.
I understand that they aren't actually that reliable and availability isn't all that great (from a poster on WNXX whos a railway journalist), this wouldn't surprise me given their recent history with the IET's.
True.
How much does the South eastern charge for London to the Dover Priory for a round trip?
Small correction. The station for the Olympic Park is Stratford International, not Ebbsfleet. Nice video though.
There is no British phone signal along parts of those cliffs which is why you got connected to France. Could be expensive if you don't have a European wide tariff.
Is that a question mark umbrella?
Great video G really enjoyed! What camera do you use?
Thanks! DJI osmo pocket 3
I was looking for my self at London st pancras International since I'm sometimes there 😄 that beach is nothing compared to Brightons beach, you won't find any sand there 😅
Update for you though, you might or might not remember back in your blackpool video I said in the comments that I will be going to Blackpool one day, and I did last weekend 😊 and I got myself the vegan fish and chips you got too, still prefer the ones no catch in Brighton but still enjoyed them 😊
I'm not used to beaches not having sand 😂 and thats great to hear! Must remember that in Brighton
You'll have to go pretty close to the sea to find some sand 😂
love hs1 take it to see my best mate in Ashford all the time
Great video! Were you tempted to have a swim in the sea?
Cant say I was 😂
You really got a text saying welcome to France? without leaving the UK? I've been to St Pancras when I was travelling to London whilst I was staying with family in rutland. Was on East midlands meridian and they have noisy engines, my seat was directly over the engine.
Haha yes quick walk to France 😂
You're not using the G7X Camera any more...what's your new camera? It's SO compact!
Pigwelly 😄
Watch out for the Luftwaffe !
It took you hours when you got there
TIL there's a place in England called "Sandwich"
Just up the road is a village called Ham. So you have to find the signpost pointing to Ham Sandwich. It's at 51°14'17.6"N, 1°20'02.6"E
It’s because the earl of sandwich is reputed to have “invented” the sandwich
Did you know if you stuck a baseball cap and some baggy trousers on a Class 395, you get a CHAVelin?
I'll see myself out
Oh geez 😂
Interesting fact about HS1 from my many occasions of driving it on Train Sim World is that for the High Speeds sections of it, the track and signalling are the same as the ones used in France to make the journey all under the same system and conditions so this technically means that the High Speed parts are actually a French railway as opposed to being British
Regarding what someone said about Brighton beach and having no sand, I'd recommend a trip to Brighton beach to ride the Volks Electric Railway, it's a unique train line and not long but the other end of the line is next to the where the nudist beach is and while that could be the ultimate place to do the "Knickers on your head" and "Squishy boobies" it's definitely not worth trying it in April lol, Too cold!
Haha didn't realise there was one in Brighton 😂
If you think that beach is stony, wait till you get to Brighton or Hastings 🤣
good train and fast, just the lack of first class was not good.
Clearly you have never been on Brighton Beach much more pebbly than Dover
if you dont like stoney beaches dont go to folkestone as much as it is a nice place the beach is entirely made out of stones and the beach is on a embankment and if you go down to the water its a little hard to get back up lol
YOU CANT BEAT A HAIRY MUFF 💕
Wheb you cane back from Spain yiu should caught train back to france then calais then dover
Cool! Haha hopefully I'll have a ride this year if I find the time 😂
Your videos always hit the right spot....something Mrs Boulder says I frequently fail to do....
Haha!
Southeastern Class 395
