Back in 2002 or there abouts, I had a interesting journey. I was due to travel on a Cardiff to Paddington as far as Reading and onto Horsham. Ok, at Cardiff, heard a announcement they couldn't locate the driver, so a slight delay already. We was further delayed by the time we reached Bristol Parkway, held at Swindon to allow us to pick up extra passengers from other services. At this point, the guard asked us to remove any unused seat reservation cards as we made a extra stop at Didcot. Opposite me, was a mother with her two daughters on their way to Heathrow. I wonder if they made their flight? Arriving Reading some 90 minutes late, a journey time of 3 hours. Looked for my onward connection, just missed it and meant another hour wait, knowing I would have a further connection at Redhill - knocked it on the head at this point and headed home. Thankfully, this was the only journey where things went pear shaped.
I remember travelling on the Highland Chieftain back in 2017 and travelled First Class which cost £49.50 with a railcard but it was Class 43 HSTs back then and was a epic journey, it's a shame that you didn't get to Inverness but still a great video G
Great video shame about the disruption to your journey I hope your getting some form of delay compensation?😊 you deserve too. You do so well to not get mad about the situation - such a legend!

Ah, shame about the melons! Doing the trip the whole way is something of an epic experience, so I hope you get to do it soon. LNER do tend to look after you quite well and first class is very comfortable. Only downside is the food portions are small. Also I find the scenery between London and Newcastle to be very boring, mainly because it's a trip I've done a lot, but further north it gets much more interesting.

I did that journey in 1982. HST Class 43 Intercity 125. Had a second class ticket but was aloud to dinner in the first class diner. I liked Inverness. It related to my home town in Sweden.
Looks like the same day I went to Berwick. Train back to Newcastle arrived over 3 hours late. An hour late leaving Berwick then further delays along the route because of the rain.
I had a similar experience funny enough,I was 1st class with avanti west coast from Birmingham new street which was supposed to call at international, Coventry, rugby, milton Keynes, Watford Junction then London euston but the train stopped just after Birmingham international due to an incident and got diverted all the way back up to Stafford and then went back down to rugby so it could miss out Coventry. Also and I thought seat H 2 on avanti pendolino didnt give you much of a window but that has no window
Sorry it didn’t work out, as LNER are usually very good. Think I have sat at that table in the 1st Class Lounge at KGX. 😊 I remember the days of the Highland Chieftain being an HST. I could hear one on the service passing my work during the week. One of the last times I traveled with LNER, I ended up being on the last train out of Edinburgh before the OHLE was brought down in a storm!
You took this really well, still looking on the positive side of things despite the pretty major setback. In my experience trains are the most unreliable form of transport there is. But still love watching your travels 😌
I have been on LNER to Edinburgh Waverley couple years ago for a funeral and apparently there was major disruption on the ECML due to signalling problems near Newark Northgate. But I do like LNER and I have been to York, Leeds, Edinburgh Waverley and Doncaster and hopefully go to Newcastle in the summer.
It doesn't take much for services to grind to a halt north of Newcastle. Better luck next time but at least you managed to spend some time in one of the best cities in the UK...where it was typically raining 😆 Jury is still out on LNER for me, had good and bad experiences in the past with them.

So best thing was yurn a debacle into a result and check out what Newcastle had to offer, hope that turned out ok... Take care, Jon B.

Guess what, I have an Umbrella just like yours!! 😂 I got it for my Mom a long long time ago on a Perfume Sale in New York.☂️😄 It was a fabulous trip, thank you!! ❤🙏😊
One cool little tip about travelling First Class from King's Cross is that there's a "secret" gate line just outside the lounge that takes you straight to the platforms via a bridge and escalators. So far out of all the first class services I've tried, LNER's feels like the best.
Newcastle -> Carlisle via tyne valley line Carlisle -> Edinburgh or Glasgow Central then Edinburgh or Glasgow to Inverness. or they got you a taxi to Edinburgh or Invernes. Never the less full refund on the single or di you manage to get a return?
What a shame you didn't get to Inverness. You MUST retry and it's really surreal travelling so far on one train, not to mention a beautiful destination. I did the trip in the opposite direction recently (just four days before your attempt) and luckily, everything went smoothly. Travelling south means you depart around 8am so you get to try both the Breakfast and Lunch menus too! A full cooked breakfast while looking out on the snowy Cairngorms takes a lot of beating! Just a note about seat selection: You can reserve a seat for free on the LNER website wherever you buy your ticket (or even if you don't have one). That's quite useful when travelling on a rover or InterRail ticket, as I was. You can also modify or cancel it later, which most other train companies don't allow.
Oh dear sorry that the train had to be cancelled it looked to be an amazing trip to do, hope you have received refund on that trip especially your hotel booking here is too the next time, good luck 👍👍✅✅
Oh no that's not good G i hope you got refunds on everything the azumas are nice trains but i find the seats very uncomfortable on long journeys i preferred the seats on the hst's before they got refurbished. I hope next time you get to complete the journey ❤
Last month I travelled from Aberdeen to KGX but between Edinburgh and Dunbar the train stopped abruptly, few minutes later the conductor announced there was a fatality
Why didn’t they stop the train at Newcastle would have saved moving back up the line I wonder how far you had to travel until you could switch to the other line to travel south
aaaaaarr Poor G, sorry you had to cancel your trip to inverness 😢if you get to redo your trip, we stayed in little town called Nairn, lovely beach there , not far from inverness, and if your traveling on lock ness Jacobite Cruises Limited re friendly crew, they even have a bar on boat , when your not filming, hope you get a refund so as to redo this trip, so chin up you Rock remember take care
Another cheery, happy trip with Gloves Trains displaying remarkable patience as the journey quietly goes off the track- as someone who saw the railway track workers watched as my slow moving train trundled over a suspected broken rail - I know the suddenly backwards movement !
Brilliant video G, shame things went very wrong that day and I hope the hotel situation got resolved. LNER Azumas are nice trains I'll admit (I've not done first class on them though lol), I do want to go from York to London Kings cross (or the other way round even) non stop someday. Newcastle is a nice place, I did go once in 2022. :)

Well, I hope you do make it up to the Highland capital one day soon, as Inverness is lovely and one of my favourite places to visit. (I am fairly local to there.) Hopefully next time will not involve large round fruits going up! 🤣
I said screw it and booked this trip back in January. I didn't take into account that it would be pitch black from Edinburgh onwards but it was absolutely worth the £85 (I hardly ever travel first class + it'd been a bucket list trip for a while). I'm sorry you didn't make it all the way. Absolutely should have another go if you can 🙂
Great video G! Absolutely gutted that you didn’t make it all the way but LNER are absolutely brilliant and they do look after you very well, hopefully you can make the second attempt at this journey when the weather is a bit warmer and not raining continuously but the best views are between Newcastle and Edinburgh as I’ve not been to Inverness but glad you enjoyed the experience despite it ending in disaster but not LNER’s fault
Gutting for you but in my experience the line has so many issues with it some its own doing some down to mother nature and faults and 300 odd miles to travel on...love your positive take on things regardless..me id be proper rinsed about it all..wish i could have more of your attitude to life..Inverness is a wonderful place to visit and the coastal scenery you were about to get to is a joy..hence the right hand side seating..look forward to take 2..that price for 1st class is cheap how did you do that?
Cool video G! Shame about the train being cancelled due to weather, I'm excited to be travelling LNER for the first time in a few weeks myself (albeit from Leeds to London)
Sorry to hear you didn't manage to get all the way to Inverness. Do give it another try sometime soon, maybe with a day out to Kyle or the Far North while you're here. You did get a good seat. A couple of weeks ago I travelled to Edinburgh sitting at the back of the third 1st Coach. I think they probably didn't have as many requests for the full breakfast as usual that morning and when they got to me had plenty left over. When it arrived I did notice there were two fried eggs, and then beneath them I found there were three slices of bacon. I know where I'll try to get a seat next time, but don't tell everyone! 🤫

Shame you never made to Inverness but hey ho at least you got to see Newcastle fab city 😊 almost my neck of the woods.
Haha ye least I been Newcastle now!
One cool little tip about travelling First Class from King's Cross is that there's a "secret" gate line just outside the lounge that takes you straight to the platforms via a bridge and escalators. So far out of all the first class services I've tried, LNER's feels like the best.
Ah ill have to look out for that!
If LNER's first class is the best - I dread to think what the rest must be like.
Yeah that line was shut as well but got a full refund immediately 👍
I enjoyed your video a lot. I use LNER a lot down south…it is not great.😌
Yeah, that didn't exactly go to plan there, we'll mark that one down as a fail, move on and try to get to Invo another day
Haha yep will definitely have to try again 😆
They didn't offer rail replacement?
Oh that sounds wonderful!
Melons Up,what a fantastic phrase will be using this to the end of its natural life!!! xxx
Haha same!
Oh dear sorry that the train had to be cancelled it looked to be an amazing trip to do, hope you have received refund on that trip especially your hotel booking here is too the next time, good luck 👍👍✅✅
Thanks and ye got full refund on the train 👍
I thought you was a travel blogger like planes trains everything. You are mostly into trains
@@darrylrichardson7940 does kinda give it away doesn't it? well, maybe not to some people. . .
She's much better than him, he only reacts to people who pay him and his mate Marsh. Also my screen cracks a little bit every time his videos come up!
I thought only virgin didn’t go all the way lol
Oh no that's not good G i hope you got refunds on everything the azumas are nice trains but i find the seats very uncomfortable on long journeys i preferred the seats on the hst's before they got refurbished. I hope next time you get to complete the journey ❤
Thanks I hope so, and thats fair! I did find the seat comfy 👍
Last month I travelled from Aberdeen to KGX but between Edinburgh and Dunbar the train stopped abruptly, few minutes later the conductor announced there was a fatality
Sorry to hear!
@@GLovesTrains its fine. I must say I absolutely love your energy and passion, it’s infectious hehe
I'd be curious to know what the compensation was, if any? Especially for hotel and onward train?
Full refund for this and everything else unrefundable
Have you either already done, or have any plans to do the UK's longest route Aberdeen to Penzance?
I'd love to do it one day!
Had they no bus to sub for the train?
Honestly we were quite delayed already and wasn't hanging around in case 😆
i use the Azuma often travelling down to London from Peterbough for concerts. The seats are a bit uncomfortable but otherwise a nice journey.
one journey i want to make. looks lovely.
Why didn’t they stop the train at Newcastle would have saved moving back up the line I wonder how far you had to travel until you could switch to the other line to travel south
That was a shocker G, you missed the best parts of the route. Wonder why no diversion via Carlisle was attempted? Hope you make it one day.
Carlisle line was shut as well
@@GLovesTrains can't win them all then! Maybe next time.
aaaaaarr Poor G, sorry you had to cancel your trip to inverness 😢if you get to redo your trip, we stayed in little town called Nairn, lovely beach there , not far from inverness, and if your traveling on lock ness Jacobite Cruises Limited re friendly crew, they even have a bar on boat , when your not filming, hope you get a refund so as to redo this trip, so chin up you Rock remember take care
Thanks, hopefully i can get up there at some point haha
New subscriber, brilliant video G, shame you couldn't get to Inverness, but Newcastle aint too shabby 😀
Thanks a lot!
So what happened next, did you stay over in Newcastle? Any refund on your hotel or train fare?
Another cheery, happy trip with Gloves Trains displaying remarkable patience as the journey quietly goes off the track- as someone who saw the railway track workers watched as my slow moving train trundled over a suspected broken rail - I know the suddenly backwards movement !
Thanks and geez!
what a great video G, have u ever done the Aberdeen to Penzance direct train
Not yet
@@GLovesTrains i am doing it in end of May and i am recording it all 13hr40mins of it
Oh what a shame… I hope you were able to grab refunds on your hotel etc… as for what happens next, do we find out in next week’s episode? 😜
Just went home 😂
Brilliant video G, shame things went very wrong that day and I hope the hotel situation got resolved. LNER Azumas are nice trains I'll admit (I've not done first class on them though lol), I do want to go from York to London Kings cross (or the other way round even) non stop someday. Newcastle is a nice place, I did go once in 2022. :)
Yeah you should deffo do that! 😄
Hey there nice to meet you. Wow I really enjoyed that video, excellent production well done. Sorry your trip got cancelled, cheers Mike
Thanks Mike!
I have been on an Azuma before - was well impressed by it, especially the smoothness of the ride. How was the veggie masala? Well, I hope you do make it up to the Highland capital one day soon, as Inverness is lovely and one of my favourite places to visit. (I am fairly local to there.) Hopefully next time will not involve large round fruits going up! 🤣
Haha hopefully not! And the food was yum I wanted more!
@@GLovesTrains Good luck on your next trip up North!
I said screw it and booked this trip back in January. I didn't take into account that it would be pitch black from Edinburgh onwards but it was absolutely worth the £85 (I hardly ever travel first class + it'd been a bucket list trip for a while). I'm sorry you didn't make it all the way. Absolutely should have another go if you can 🙂
Haha ye better do it in summer ey 😂
You should Try the West Highland Line from Glasgow Queen Street sometime it's worked by a 156 but has Amazing & Beautiful Scenery and views
How long did it take you for that journey
nicker hwks. hope you had a nice time in london. im from london. i love your videos !
Thanks a lot!
@@GLovesTrains ♥
@@darrylrichardson7940 i did. i really like their style of filmography
Is that by any chance a 7th Dr Question mark umbrella ?
It is ye
Great video G! Absolutely gutted that you didn’t make it all the way but LNER are absolutely brilliant and they do look after you very well, hopefully you can make the second attempt at this journey when the weather is a bit warmer and not raining continuously but the best views are between Newcastle and Edinburgh as I’ve not been to Inverness but glad you enjoyed the experience despite it ending in disaster but not LNER’s fault
Thanks Jack! And ye LNER were great totally not their fault!
Thanks! I just kept looking from time to time on the prices 👍
Cool video G! Shame about the train being cancelled due to weather, I'm excited to be travelling LNER for the first time in a few weeks myself (albeit from Leeds to London)
Thanks and sure you'll enjoy it!
@@GLovesTrains LNER vs Jet2, let's make it a Northern smackdown!
Welcome to LNER during a rainy day .......
Haha I won't tell! 😆
Your power cable looks dangerously frayed.
I had one like that once that randomly stayed smoking one day. You really need to bin it.
