Teslas are nice (driven two). Currently I drive a $50k+ PHEV. Fact, though: I like it but after a few months it’s just another car. Your husband is being overly emotional.
At this point Teslas are overrated. Seen and been in many but never understood the hype. They are fast and mileage efficient (like many current year cars) but other than that it’s just an iPad car.
Just like with any other new car, the newness and excitement and fun wears off after a few months. Don't go into debt for that fleeting feeling. Cars all do the same thing. Keep the Prius.
I bought a model s used for $28k. Costs me $5 for 250 miles. Actually saves about $2k a year in gas fees. We will see if it's worth it when a big repair is required.
I bought a used tesla S for under 35k and I love it. I did save a ton of money because of free charging no maintenance and insurance. They make 155k so they can sell one of the prius and still easily afford a used tesla especially if it isn't an x.
I meant to put no maintenance and insurance is cheaper. Also a light got water in it they gave me a X as a loaner and fixed for free even though I was past warrantee.
In addition, does a PhD teach you how much precious metal is used to produce an electric car. Please put a "Co-exist" bumper sticker on it and you will feel great!
I had a family friend who had a kia 2013 well it broke down and they want 5k-8k to fix it. broke over a year ago and still don't have the money to fix it. point is only if you can afford it and the repair cost.
@Lone Ranger we know a mechanic but he couldn't fix it. also I don't think anyone will do it cheaper unless they personally know her. especially its a electric car.
The only thing wrong with driving a Prius is that it's the old school unsexy equivalent of driving a Checker Cab. They run over 300K with minimal maintenance. I told a Chicago cab driver that I drove a Prius just like his and he confirmed my numbers. Tough cars that can survive Chicago cab service. Financially a smart choice. Keep the Prii.
It goes the same for buying a regular car or hybrid rid that gets better gas mileage. The amount you save in gas, new payment, new interest will never be found in the life of the vehicle. Trading across is one thing, but selling your car that gets 28 for one that gets 40 but you also pay 500 a mo for it... explain that math.

An electric car is about twice as efficient as a hybrid when it is charged at home. But when you use other chargers it usually cancels out any savings depending on the cost of electricity.
If you drive a Tesla....it is powered by coal in most states....
I don’t have a car but I see free charging stations at the grocery store.
He was right.
Dave: When I panic I buy bullets
Everyone else: … uuhhhhh (weak nervous laugh) 👀
As someone that is happily single and focused on their career, I love making any decision I want without needing it to get approved from someone else. I’m no Einstein, but I like to think rationally and mostly make good decisions. Now I’m sitting here and wondering, wow a married life is crazy. You gotta make sure both partners are on board before u do anything. If one partner doesn’t agree then it most likely won’t come to fruition. Esp when it comes to finanaces
It’s only a problem if you don’t make enough money
Dr. John! Great answer. Loved how he made it understandable.
Seriously now a days it seems the more credencials one has, the more schooling , the more degrees, the more badges the dumber the person gets. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ this is sad. 😢
I’m confused, the guy makes more than the average income, how is he dumb? Because he makes the money, wants to get the car of his choice and his wife’s on DR Show asking how to spend money they have?
@Chris P whats the point? Sounds like a lot of bash because he told his wife some excuse to buy a car, and then the wife wanted some attention, which is why she was rambling the first couple of minutes, just to get aired on a social media platform. I doubt the husband wants or needs his info out there and i doubt he needs help managing his money. This just sounds like the typical husband who gave an excuse to his wife to upgrade his car (Prius < Tesla). What did i miss?
All by design!
@@alvarovillegas2407 point exactly. Are you dumb too or are you fooling around? you might want to rewatch the episode. I get it he makes money working we all make money working too. Money doesn’t grow on tree. He who doesn’t work does not eat .But making Money more than average does not make you smarter either. Dave’s point in all of this is that he is making poor and dumb choices thinking we MUST NEED ABSOLUTELY a Tesla bc of what is happening in the world. Seriously 🤷🏻♂️. Even if he could afford it , even I could afford or anyone could. But Daves point is that you don’t need a $60k car like if it’s a life or death situation. With this I hope you don’t say now how is he poor? 🤦🏻♂️ again point exactly .
@Chris P but the math works out. Electric cars are cheaper in the long run compared to gas. Estudiado with the tax incentives.
The guy is using "what's going on in the world" to justify buying a new toy. 😅🤣🤣🙈
THINGS are not worth going into debt for.
Teslas are nice (driven two). Currently I drive a $50k+ PHEV. Fact, though: I like it but after a few months it’s just another car. Your husband is being overly emotional.
The only option is a Tesla? But we are saving the planet, Dave!
Yolo in Tesla calls instead lol
For real. 🤣
Or just buy and hold shares long term. Will payoff
Agree. HELOC into Tesla calls and AMC shares.
That's the perfect example of how people want to create a necessity to justify unnecessarily expenses
Telsa is like 50K to 60K new. Cheaper to get a used Camry for 21K and drive that for 10 years.
drive it use use use
Depends on the model, trim.
Maybe if you buy a mediocre car 🤷♂️
John: no more gas
Caller: yea...yea!
Papa Dave: you are saying there will be no more gas
Caller: no..no
🙄
John should have kept his mouth shut
"Cool, Elizabeth, how can we help today?" Meaning, I don't care Elizabeth, get to the point.
They make 155k so they can sell one of the prius and still easily afford a used tesla especially if it isn't an x.
you dont pay insurance for a Tesla 0__o?
No maintenance and insurance?
I meant to put no maintenance and insurance is cheaper. Also a light got water in it they gave me a X as a loaner and fixed for free even though I was past warrantee.
How does he have free charging? Does his company provide charging for free or are you renting a place where the electricity is included ?
@@lyndalamb3221 that one was a 2015 so charging at the charging stations were free I just upgraded so now I have to pay.
Midlife crisis. Middle aged scientist wants a chick magnet.
No flight or fight here.
He has to rationalize this to his wife.
He would have gotten a Chevy... If it wasn't for the recalls :)))))
Dude wants a cool Tesla.
In addition, does a PhD teach you how much precious metal is used to produce an electric car. Please put a "Co-exist" bumper sticker on it and you will feel great!
Or a ‘restore the soul of America - Xao Bai-Den’ bumper sticker.
When it quits on the interstate, can you walk to the station and get a bucket of electricity? People, don't be idiots!
How often do you run out of gas?
@@juggernautAA12 not often because there's a lot of gas stations.
Yes, BUY BULLETS for the end of the world.. NOT a Tesla😂😂😂
Too bad the American citizens weren't the Taliban. Man they got a lot of cool stuff that would do their enemies a ton of damage
3:10 "To the MOON!"
She doesn't make the rules in the house, he does. She needs to stay in her place.
imagine how exhausting it is to be married to a woman like this that just talks in circles
imagine how exhausting it is in bed...
A PhD making just a little over 100k. What a waste of a degree
John - amazingly put.
depreciating asset . It's shiny and I want one . current vehicle still runs ?
Man Dave is not having it in this one 🤣
I had a family friend who had a kia 2013 well it broke down and they want 5k-8k to fix it. broke over a year ago and still don't have the money to fix it. point is only if you can afford it and the repair cost.
@Lone Ranger well yeah she would get rid of it but she still owes money on it .
@Lone Ranger we know a mechanic but he couldn't fix it. also I don't think anyone will do it cheaper unless they personally know her. especially its a electric car.
@@googleuser8660 it’s broken if it was just a battery the would have fixed it already it’s a electrical circuit problem I believe
Tesla’s are absolute money pits, not money savers
Most of my buddies have brand new cars ( which the bank owns ). They care too much what others think of them.
It was so funny, I had to listen this twice.
Teslas combine the worst attributes of a computer with the worst ones of a car.
What a pain to listen to this woman she can't even explain herself properly.... 🙄
They’ve already made up their mind to buy the Tesla. She just wants Dave’s validation.
If we suddenly run out of gasoline and you’re the only guy in the neighborhood with a Tesla, you’re going to be the one they all bum rides off of.
Keep the Prii.
then again its unsexy... lol
People like this shouldn't be allowed to call in. They're a waste of Dave's time when there are people out there who actually need financial advice.
Dude in blue is overthinking this. The husband just wants to buy a new Tesla and he’s rationalizing this luxury purchase to himself and his wife with a bunch of made up nonsense.
Where does electricity come from children? Coal and natural gas. I really gotta be the Santa isn’t really guy. “Plug in is green” lol
Imagine she mispoke "with what's going on in the world right now". The CORE question was should she go back in debt for a car.
Hi Dave my husband is a PHD grad (Stanford) he’s a scientist, my daughter went to Harvard, my son currently goes to Yale & I’m enrolled at MIT, oh and my nieces both went to Princeton and my parents are both PHDs…like lady wtf 😂
Well this didn't age well, cause gas is almost $7, and Russia about to start WW3
3:30 I loved it when he used the word asinine. That’s a good word!
