Anyone who loves antiques, simple lines, honest design, or beautiful solid wood pieces would be proud to have this dresser. Thank you for bringing it back.
That white paint job was probably for a little girl's room from a family who didn't have a bunch a money. I hope she had big dreams and they came true. Having served its purpose, the dresser is now onto other adventures. The stories it could tell.
@@jm7804Funny that you said that because when my folks finally bought a house they didn't have money for new furniture. When Dad painted our rooms, each dresser was a rescued or gifted item so no two were alike. He'd paint them all white and use the colors in our room as accent colors on the knobs or whatever. Thanks for letting me take a trip down memory lane, it's all because of your comment, lol!
Ironically, golden oak is the color so many people want to eradicate. You gave this dresser back its beauty by using golden oak. Beautiful job, Barry!💕
You are an old soul. Every time you reference your dad and uncles, every time you bring a piece back from the brink, I appreciate you all the more. Respect, looking back to where we came from and being grateful for still being here is voiced in all your videos. I appreciate the skill, philosophy, and care that goes into your work. Thank you for the time and effort it takes to share your efforts! I soak up every post!
It was wonderful to watch the paint layer come off to reveal the beautiful grain of the wood. A perfect restoration of an old piece that can now live on.
I love oak, particularly the "tiger striped" patterns in the woodgrain. So nice to see something overlooked and rescued returned to its original quiet beauty.
Another hidden treasure resurrected. I actually gasped when the wood was revealed. I found myself choked up by the beauty you restored. Thank you for your videos. They really inspire and uplift.
It looks amazing. Seeing all those layers of paint being removed and the true beauty being freed was heartwarming. Now it can live for another 100 years. Wonderful job Barry!
Thank you Barry, for another tranquil and rejuvenating (both for the furniture and the human side of things) video! You’re my favourite of them all, and there are quite a FEW! I would have loved something like this when hubby and I recently set out to buy a bedside table and a chest of drawers for our guest room. But hubby likes new items and we paid Aus$4,300 for two brand spanking new Tasmanian Blackwood pieces. They are gorgeous, but soooooo expensive! But, this one you just resurrected is so well restored and so pretty, I would have just as happily bought it, but the whole Pacific Ocean was in the way! Oh well, I’m still happy to see you revive these old pieces. It does my recycle-loving heart good to see it, if not own it!
I came from a family of carpenters and cabinet makers. So I love the oak era. Being 80years old, I still have several pieces of furniture made of 1/4 sawn oak. I love them ! I still have the cabinets that my dad and brother built for me 55 years ago. You put this piece back to that era! Beautifully done! Thank You !!
I had initially not wanted you to stain it, but you're right! The stain brings out the wood grain even more, and is so beautiful. Fabulous job, Barry, I love it!
Looks wonderful! I was so glad to hear your commentary in this one! ❤You know there was a time when everyone painted old furniture, it was the style. It’s nice to see the wood again!! ❤😊❤
@ I love your restoration videos! I told you once before that I restore antique dolls. I enjoy watching your restoration videos for the same reason I enjoy restoring antique dolls. I think you and I have similar goals.
Barry, I must say this may be one of my favorite pieces you have done. Your voice is so calming, and I love how you explain techniques reason for using them. Thank you for not doing a silent video and thinking viewer understands what you're doing.
There is nothing as beautiful as Quarter sawn Oak; Thank you for resurrecting that Beauty, it brought tears to my eyes seeing all that beauty hidden under the Paint. I'd love to own a piece like that. Please keep up the good work and again thank you for sharing that with us. Stay safe, stay well and Blessings to you.♥♥♥!!!
I grew up with an old oak dresser. It has ornate carvings that look like ribbons. I didn't really like the look of the grain and thought it needed paint. Now I love how oak is so interesting when it is finished right. That dresser is now in my parents' guest room, so I'll use it when I visit them again.
For its age, this dresser was in excellent condition. It took several generations of good care to land in that second hand store needing only paint removal and refinishing. Lucky indeed that it was you who found it; luckier still the person who brings it home again.
Oh Barry! It's beautiful once again. It feels like going back in time as the paint slips away and you can feel the life in the piece. I will pick antique over new every day of the week. I think old things fall out of favor in generation gaps. Maybe they just don't see the beauty in history. Makes my soul happy to see these pieces being saved. Well done, Barry!! 🎉
As you said Barry someone loved the piece enough to spend time on the ivy design. The wood is beautiful and you've brought out the best in the piece. Happy holidays to you too.
Beautiful restoration Barry it shows in your level of detail to bring back an antique piece, I for one would give this little dresser pride of place. Besides who now days can afford brand new solid oak furniture not the majority of people, well done .🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🦋🐞🐝💙💙
Amazing transformation. I have always loved antique furniture. I feel that they almost have a soul or memories of their former owners if you will. The dresser was indeed beautiful!!
Watching the old white paint roll off & expose the beautiful wood grain beneath made me smile. Thank you, Barry, for restoring this chest to it's former beauty.
Your patience with those knobs shows your commitment to restoration. I would've ditched them for newer ones I could've stained to match. Watching your episodes is always a pleasure. On this day of thanksgiving, I'm thankful for what you put into the world, Barry.
But also beauty is explained by science. Nature is relaxing to look at. It lowers your heart rate. So natural wood versus white paint is a big difference. Also we are drawn to the golden ratio and symmetry.
Beauty is subjective. I, for example, find a lot of the furniture this man restores to be very bland and they give off the 70s "wood paneling" look. There are a rare few pieces that I think are beautiful. That being said, I can appreciate that other people find these pieces beautiful. I can also admire this creator's enthusiasm for bringing these furniture pieces back to their original state; but the original state doesn't automatically make it beautiful.
I love that you bring old pieces back to life. My first refinish project was a solid oak dresser painted white. I refinished it 20 years ago before TH-cam but it was awesome to reveal the solid beautiful wood underneath the old paint. Ironically I originally planned to repaint it but once the wood was revealed that plan changed
I am not a woodworker, nor a furniture restorer. I am someone that enjoys seeing someone become skilled in their passion. That dresser has been given another hundred years of life with your hands. Your narrative style is also more akin to a David Attenborough documentary than a furniture refinishing tutorial.
Your video is so soothing and relaxing, and the most important point is that you show all the work and patience you put to work, unlike short videos that connot show all the effort in just 1 minite and make us think its an easy work to do
@@MadCityModern I'm sorry. I know that your name is Barry. I have no idea why I jad originally typed Brian. I do apologize. My spouse and I enjoy your channel. Keep up the amazing work.
It's a simple piece but quite lovely, moreso now with its natural beauty revealed. As you worked on this, (and thank you for all your extra detailed attention), I couldn't help but compare the uniqueness of an artisan crafted furniture piece to the individuality of a person-- skin tone, freckles, bone structure and even scars make us uniquely us-- so also with the wood grain, stain and styling of the furniture. Each telling their story. It's nice that you've given this one another chapter.
First, this was probably my favorite restoration you've ever done. I have no idea why, except, you restored it the way it was supposed to look like. I love the final result SO MUCH! Second, you always teach me techniques I would have never thought of. That's very cool.
Absolutely beautiful restoration ! Love that you " got it right " as people say and did it justice ! People often take things at face value without looking at what they truly are . That mixed with the fact that many people simply don't appreciate styles that aren't in " current fashion " and many beautiful pieces of furniture get left behind , sold , or painted in an attempt to renew them and it hides what the gem is underneath . Great job !
Beautiful! I just watched someone paint and then “antique” a dresser by sandpapering the edges, what a waste. Glad to see there are still “masters” out there bringing furniture back to its natural beauty. 👏🇺🇸
Beautiful! Thank you for restoring this piece. It was so satisfying to see the beautiful wood grain reveal itself as you stripped away the paint. The final result was just gorgeous.

I'm not a big fan of golden oak, but this is a stunner. The clean lines of the piece is what makes it timeless.

It looks so nice though. I disagree
The mighty oak is my favorite wood for furniture. It’s not uppity. It’s just good, solid and durable. But I’m old so what do I know. 😊
