Bub I still respect you're work please remember that ! Leather stain works better for wood then shelf stain, coopers striper club for the price and time taken for projects and chemicals works better. Fantastic teaching video as always!!!
Barry, I have to thank you for the quality of presentation in the videos, and the exceptional skill with which you've restored the pieces you have presented. My spouse's job is sending all of it's employees to work from home after the first of the year, and so she needs a desk. We found one at a local yard sale for $10. It was the shape and look she wanted, but it was a horrible black painted monstrosity when we bought it. After a few weeks of removing paint (following your excellent example!) I have uncovered 7 different layers of paint, ranging from Pepto Bismol pink to the most nauseatingly bright mint green. White, two shades of blue, red, and black (two different layers!) and I finally have it down to a lovely bare wood. She wants a dark mahogany finish, and once I complete the sanding and surface prep, that's what it will be. I did find on the underside of the desk a hand-scrawled markings that indicate this desk was made in the 1920s. Thanks for the details on the finish! Couldn't have done this without your excellent example!
You are a real friend to help with refinishing the doors. I did this with my old house and what a wonderful surprise you get when the paint is removed. 😊
I remember not knowing how to do that but totally restored the double front doors arched top with added wooden framed window arched over them on an Historic Philadelphia Italianate stone pile. Never took off the doors as it would have resulted in dozens of curious walking into the place. Ignorance is bliss and unafraid. You did a wonderful job on this,Barry. I am proud of you.
Same here...sometimes a restoration video, especially one as detailed as this one, reminds me of why I want to hire a professional. These look beautiful and I'd be scared I was going to ruin them.
You did a fantastic job with the door! They can seriously be a real pain in the butt, and the hardware, especially antique mortised locksets, aren't easy to work with, either. You tackled this door wonderfully!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen doors like that with the stepped Art Deco styling. You sure have a lot of patience with these tedious projects! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful door! I’ll bet the family is delighted to have it restored and back in use as a lovely piece of architecture for the home. I say “architecture” because it’s not a standard door in use today. This door has so much character and yet is very simple, no carving, no fancy window. Again- less IS more. Who knew, lol. Just gorgeous wood. Excellent job! Don’t mind me- I come from a long line of woodworkers starting with wheelwrights coming across the plains to a great grandfather making violins. To family today- still making stuff with wood in the shop. 😊
Thank you for the good tips, Barry. My parents, born in the 1920s, told me that people of their parents' generation saw unpainted wood as not being as "upper class" as painted wood. I wonder if that is true of doors in old houses, as well.
I'd heard that wealthier homes used better quality wood trim to be stained, while less expensive homes had lower quality wood that would should be painted. If I could afford to buy and restore an old home, I would want to show off the wood.
It might also be that all of that dark wood made the house really dark. I painted my hollow wood doors because they were a dark oak and the white doors are sooooo much brighter that I can actually see in my hallway now. 😃
Hi Barry, and thanks for sharing with us! That door is unrecognisable from the white one at the beginning! It would be so easy to just cast it aside and go buy a new one(s) but YOU can always see the beauty within! Such a satisfying result! Your friend is a very lucky man to have you as his friend! ❤️😊🦘🇦🇺
I would personally like to thank the TH-cam algorithm for bringing me to your channel. I've never done any type of restoration, but watching your videos has given me a respect and appreciation to the amount of labor and love that goes into such projects. And I thoroughly enjoy your words of wisdom in many of your videos. Consider my an avid appreciator and renovating binger. 💛
I have, many years ago, owned two houses that had been built in the 1920s, and I remember those doors weighing a lot. One house, the front door was having hinge issues, so we had to take it down to fix the hinges. That thing weighed almost 300 lbs. We actually weighed it. Over two inch thick solid oak. Bless you for restoring these doors' original dignity.
Barry another great episode. I must admit I regret in my youth using paint stripper without protective gloves, and it would cause damage to my hands, I'm glad to see you are protecting your skin and nerves from the toxic ingredients. I've never understood who would look at a door's beautiful woodgrain and think, "I'm going to glop up the wood with white paint."
Hi Barry! Great video, always a pleasure. My husband and I bought a house in Colorado, built in the early 50's; we bought the house about 2009. All the doors (11 of them) had not been painted, but the varnish had yellowed to orangish. The wood was ash. I stripped all 11 doors, sanded and stained (not orangish) and put on a clear finish. The result was sooooo satisfying: I get you and your soliloquy about door renovation!
The step-by-step process helps beginners know what they're getting into before attempting such a job. It's a beautiful door, and I'm glad your friend's family is working to restore such hefty, solid doors to their original state.
Beautiful refinishing. My LH did our doors, for our 1930’s house, well all but two, and finished them with Danish oil. He did a wonderful job, only marred on one door with a burn mark, that I suspect someone had to have put on by trying to remove paintwork with a blow torch and scorched it. I haven’t finished the other two doors yet. I enjoy watching your videos Barry. X
One note to people who want to get into refinishing is only use the disposable chip brushes with natural bristles. Using chemical strippers with foam or artificial brushes can actually melt them and cause a bigger mess.
It's always so relaxing to watch you rediscover the hidden beauty beneath layers of gunk. Those doors are absolutely beautiful. Probably better than when they were new. Thank you for what you do.
Those doors are unbelievably GORGEOUS!! I could only hope that one day, I could replace all my interior doors with the beauty of antique doors but... I know that will never happen. So enjoy those magnificent doors!
I love your work. Instead of the brush you choice in this clip for the paintstripper i vould recommend a brush that hairstylist use to dye hair. The brush can be cleaned and used several times. ❤
That painted door was hiding such gorgeous grain pattern❤. You are a great friend, refinishing the doors with/for you friend. 😊 thanks for sharing with us
Vinegar (an acid) and Baking soda (a base) neutralize each other into water with the byproduct being bubbles. Don't be fooled by the bubbles. Pick either the vinegar or backing soda for your bath solution, but mixing the two is no different than just regular water.
Thank you for posting such a detailed video, I've always been reluctant to use paint strippers due to not knowing how to neutralise it once the majority of the stripping has been done
This door (and presumably the other 2) looks great. If the family is looking to actually lock the doors again, they should try removing the locking mechanism to bring to an antiques shop and try a selection of skeleton keys. I found a key that matched my lock within 10 minutes. 😊
Thank you for showing how you poked holes in the rim of the can so the liquid flows back into the can. I get so frustrated when I see cans with the paint or stain flowing over the sides of the cans. I look forward to watching your videos. My father a watch maker by trade was also a very gifted craftsman. It always seemed he could build anything. I was always his helper.
Recently found your channel. Good ASMR stuff. I feel that combining your soft and sensual narration with casual swearing would put it on another level. That’s just me to lol. Keep up the good work.
What beautiful doors. I am wanting to do that on the only door left from our 1905 house, and this helped. I wish we still had all of the old doors! ❤😊❤
Hey Barry, it's nice to see you working on old doors, removing paint to reveal the beautiful wood grain. As always, your attention to detail is brilliant, creating a beautiful finished restoration. Nice work! S James Miller, Bay View WI
Great job Barry, always a delight to see your restorations. Especially when you tackle those gruesome painted furniture projects. Your patience capability is amazing. Thank you for another fantastic video.
I grew up in Queen Anne homes. We were poor and a family of 10. Usually we had a two bedroom house but, there were three houses that were Queen Anne. One of which was an old boarding house. That was the only time shared with only one other sibling. Oh, what I wouldn't give to have that home now.
You’ve inspired me to look closer at some of the doors in my 1916 house. I’d never tackle all but maybe a few. I appreciate learning about applying wax and finishes. Again I love your shop.
gorgeous office area!!! so funny you showed that black panther. i collect those midcentury panthers as well and have them in red, black, chartreuse, green and brown!
Those doors were beautiful once finished, they will stand proud for many years to come now 😍 I would love old doors like that, modern doors are flimsy and ugly with very little wood involved. Sadly we are in rented accommodation here so have no choice (not allowed to change fixtures). Thank you for your and your friends hard work 😊
This made me chuckle, remembering the when I finally got atone to stripping the doors in my 1925 house. I got them taken down, and half way through stripping the first one, I discovered they were all painters-grade pine, not hardwood. 😂 I put them all back and painted instead.
This was wonderful! I love seeing these of different strippers depending on the finish, and spore image too use the most environmentally-friendly available. I LOVE old doors - but sadly only have horrible plain hollow doors. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this restoration. I wish I could buy one of the standing desks - but I recently quit/retired, so that expense is hard to justify.😂Happy Thanksgiving!
Such an educational video! I believe you explained everything with all the details and tips needed to ensure a perfect restoration! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS DOORS!

The door looks great. I am currently re-finishing a 1920 whole house of doors and trim. All of which has multiple layers of paint. The latest being a hefty layer of latex paint.
Lots of tips and tricks in this video, thank you, the doors look amazing, you made the grain really pop👍🏻 Happy thanksgiving Barry Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Love them! Also thank you for taking the time to explain the process you use. I currently have two dressers and a vintage sewing machine table that need to be stripped.

It’s amazing what comes out from underneath all that paint, isn’t it?
Thank you Barry for the holiday post. Doors can be tedious, but can be rewarding.
Thank you. These were certainly tedious
@ beautiful work, the doors came out ready for the next generation. From my view, worth the effort.

I really appreciate that

These doors are wonderful!!
Thank you
Barry you and your friend did a wonderful job restoring the door to their true beauty. Thank you for the delightful Holiday post!
Thank you so much!
I can not begin to imagine why someone would want to paint over such beautiful doors. Well done, you!
You did a fantastic job with the door! They can seriously be a real pain in the butt, and the hardware, especially antique mortised locksets, aren't easy to work with, either. You tackled this door wonderfully!
I agree, antique hardware can be a challenge!
I really enjoyed this. Thank you 😊
You are welcome! 😊
Every bit as satisfying as your furniture, those doors really had the wow factor when you had finished with them.
Thank you, Barry. I always enjoy the videos with you talking a bit extra. You have a calming voice ☺️ Lovely result on the doors🚪

Loved the video. Doors deserve the same level of care as our furniture, particularly when they are originally the house.
Exquisite result! So glad your friend decided to restore the original doors and reveal their beauty. Well done, guys!
Thank you so much! We had a blast restoring these beautiful doors.
Beautiful doors and hardware. Glad they removed the paint.
Thank you
I took 150 years of paint off my front door. I needed a friend like you, Barry.

Your channel, this video in particular, would have been so helpful back in the mid-80s when I was restoring a 1910 house! I muddled through.

I’ve been following since you started and I think this is my favorite one so far. I would love to have a house full of these doors.
Wow! Those turned out amazing!! Definitely a treasure to have in the home.
Oak is such a beautiful wood.
It's a great Video, you show ways to keep something instead of buying new! Thanks❤
