Magnifiques!
I heard a clip of this von Otter and Bonney and loved it but this with Dessey is just as lovely and a surprise. I never knew Dessey sang Strauss. Such a light and lyrical style.
Wow, 2:27 makes me cry every time. I’m in love with this rendition. I performed the suite to this wonderful opera about a year ago. So happy I found this amazing video.
I didnt know Dessay had sung Sophie. Contrary to what most people write here, I find her singing quite beautiful and radiant and the two voices blend extremely well. Delightful!
In an interview for arte in 1993 Natalie Dessay said that the possibilty to sing Sophie was actually the main reason why she became a member of the ensemble of the Vienna States Opera. It was originally not planed that she sings Olympia...
And Güden should never be forgotten in a list of the best Sophies, as well. That 1954 version with Jurinac as Oktavian and Kleiber conducting is one of the most beautiful things one's ever going to hear. ;-)
Thank you for uploading this historical document: It was one of two performances Natalie Dessay ever sang Sophie - and I was the lucky guy to hear both of them live! :-)
I love this recording so much. I tear up every time starting at 2:38 I performed this summer of 2019, and it has completely changed my outlook on music and emotional expression.
Interesting.... Here (3:37) the trumpet plays an E NATURAL, when the score says Eflat... I must say I prefer the subtle harmonic of the E natural, as an appogiatura to the top note, but... Then I listened to different versions and quite a few of them play the E natural as well....
@64marc64 I'm not sure if it's available on DVD, but I know there is video out there of this full production from 1994 in Vienna, but with Bonney as Sophie. Unfortunately, the 2 clip I posted is all I have.
The Austrian Broadcast Corporation recorded a few months before, this performance, a performance with Carlos Kleiber!!! With Dessay, they recoeded only the Presentation of the Rose!!!
Beautiful production and von Otter is sublime in the title role, only wish they'd found a warmer voiced Sophie. While Dessay's acting is uncharacteristically poised (to the point of seeming sedated), that metallic, spreading, uneven tone makes the character sound cheap to me.

Exquisitely done by both; Dessay does the first phrase at 2:38 in one breath. And the "look'at 3:35 is perfect.

Merci Richard Strauss

Acacia Bloom I agree. And von Otter matches her every step of the way.

Un bellissimo duetto, emozionante
Wow❤Beautiful!!!
Beautiful staging!
Beautiful Anne&Natalie✨✨✨

I know little about this sort of music, but I do know I should have listened to more of it.

Satyrspiel where else did Dessay sing Sophie and when?
@@eduardobraivein8496 these only 2 performances at the Wiener Staatsoper, nowhere else.
Ms Dessay is gorgeous
Magnifique!
I love this recording so much. I tear up every time starting at 2:38

Let's not forget Stich-Randall on the 1957 EMI Angel recording.
👏👏👏👏👏
Grosse Duetto.
Grande cantora, imensa atriz a Dessay!
Excellent!
évidement sublime....

@64marc64 Deutsch Grammaphon released a DVD of the full production, I bought it over the summer. It's awesome.
Sehr textverständlich,super Bühnenbild.Extraklasse.
Wonderful

Bonney is a sublime Sophie!
Where could I find the recording of this or even video with the two of them? I love both of them!
Bellísima Aria
Duet
superbe
Lucia Popp right on. Young Schwarzkopf with a bit of steel in her voice and excellent too.
grazieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, ti amo
Sublimissime ! ! ! !
brillante!
Dessay can hold up the line beautifully but she cannot beat Popp
You HAVE to send this to me!!!!
Wow this is an amazing rendition !
BTW who was the Marschallin, and Ochs in that show ?
Moll and Gwyneth Jones
Bonney can’t be beat.
🌹
merci beaucoup , if by chance it would exist in dvd ?
Fine performance by both. Sophie is a bit artists. Von otter perfect.
Would anyone know where one could get the full performance of this?
Wes Hui I don't have the full video, but I do have in-house audio, if you're interested.
I would very much enjoy that!
Wes Hui search der rosenkavalier Kurt Moll

who does the high G and where does it come in?
Is this actually the same run of performances of the recording with Bonney???
No
Definitely the. same staging, simply beautiful.
1m60 !!
Also Rotherberger is superb! Bregen is not bad either...

The best Sophie ever was Anneliese Rothenberger !!!!
ohne jeglichen Zweifel. Unerreichbar.
I am not exactly sure, but she is very small. Under 1,60 metres
So her height is probably 5'3?😐
@@elizabethveron9542 no 5 foot 3 is 160cm . Less maybe 157cm or so
It si ok. But Bonney forever!
@hullguy123
*lol*
Dessay sings beautifully-pity that her voice changed later in a bad way!

I usually like Dessay, but she sounds like a child here.
she always sounds like a child in her good days. when she did try to sound like a grown up she desroyed her voice and sounds horrible.
She sounds much less of a child than she usually did. He floated notes are anything else but childlike
Sophie is a child, to be fair.
povero Strauss ...
I just don’t think Dessay is suit for this role.
I love Ms. von Otter. Dessay is excellent here, but Barbara Bonney is probably my favorite Sophie that I've heard.
Bonney and Popp are extraordinary as Sophie.
AGREED! Barbara Bonney is the best ever!
Bonney is in my top three. Morley as well.
