The ageless Grundheber (around 67 or 68 here) & in pretty good shape. Not only that but we saw him as IAGO in Wien 4 years later! To top that off in 2010 he appeared in a film of DER FREISCHÜTZ as Ottokar which is a high baritone role although written for some reason in the treble clef! In all productions & recordings that I know of that role is always sung by a high baritone complete with an optional high G sharp. The role must have originally been written for tenor otherwise why is it not in the bass clef? Anyway the longevity of Grundheber‘s instrument must put him in the record books along with Mark Reizen, Rolando Panerai & very few others if any. I did also see Grundheber as the DUTCHMAN in Hamburg in the mid 1990’s. He was born in 1936 I believe so do the math on that one. Grundheber (like Cornell MacNeil) had a deeper lower range than most baritones of his type which one hears in The Dutchman‘s music (also sung by MacNeil) as well as in IL TABARRO which I also saw Grundheber as Michele play in Hamburg in 1998. On this DUTCHMAN performance above here is another fine singer Walter Fink who I remember as Rocco in Wien around 1993. 😅😮
Muchas gracias.
It feels like the lack of the torrent of a multi-layered acoustic sound. Actually, was there a lack of actors, contrary to expectations from Maestro.Karajan? There is no flow in the phrasing and it is tingling. On the other hand, it is not hard to imagine that the existence of Dr.Karl Böhm and Maestro.Karajan was in the creative core as a production of what degree of production.
I'm very happy to find Ozawa's performance of wagner.
I wanted him to conduct wagner more and more😢
