Evey woman can fall in love with the Octavian performed by Brigitte Fassbaender : she is GREAT and her singing is marvellous , light , nice and warm , technically the best - I think Mlle Fassbaender is the MUSIC ! I know today she makes prestigious Master Classes : I would pay a year of my life to get there to attend her Lessons . Thanks a lot Miss Fassbaender for all the wonderfull years you gave to us of beautyfull Music and Singing !
Der Rosenkavalier is the opera that never gonna get old. The customes, music, stage, etc. The magnificent of this opera be current no matter when you see a performance, may be 100 years ago or further.
This is a moment of musical perfection that is timeless. Not only are Fassbaender and Popp beyond stellar each in their vocal prime but the details both add to their roles! Such as in the very beginning where Popp is flitting about unsure about what to do next but at the last possible moment bows in time PERFECTLY when Octavian makes his official entrance - Utterly Delicious.
Thanks for bringing that out. I never really studied her face at this moment (being transfixed by Popp) but it is amazing how much she expresses so subtly. Truly is pure bliss.
Exquisitely beautiful singing by Lucia Popp, and lovely singing by Brigitte Fassbaender. So lovely to hear women's voices in meltingly beautiful duet. It is transcendent.
You all MUST notice the brilliant acting moment at 3:22. Lucia either whispers something to Brigitte, or brushes her face with her lips, or, as she's doing with the rose, smell her. And BOOM they are in love. Of course sung brilliantly by both of them, but also acted brilliantly by both.
Inevitably, the tears stream down my cheeks. The notes of the gods. It hardly seems possible that the nation that produced such utterly, utterly sublime moments could almost immediately impose such overwhelming evil upon the world.
Superb. You see Octavian melt when Sophie floats that beautiful voice into the stratosphere. Great acting, very restrained and musically gorgeous. Love the little smile as Oktavian realises the presentation was a winner
You two moon-ers probably haven't heard the "news" yet. Satan brought her back in a pre-prepared vessel, knowing she'd get killed: Do yourselves the favor and google a so-called "human" called Jeanette Biedermann. And try to see through the make-up. Remind you of anyone?! Then check her IMDB and understand Satan's own sense of "humour" in her roles and the name of the series she's been in … And then spread the word! Aaaaaaaargh! *Popp is back* … Quasi: Pop(p)o - that's _back_ you know?! (In German.) And with you _mooning_ her …
Magnificent ! Such bliss ! Soo beautiful ! Brigitte Fassbaender is not only an outstanding singer, but also such a great actress! I saw this production and cast many years ago in Munich . Thank you!
Some fine performances of this magical scene, but Lucia and Brigitte are the top for me. Brigitte's reaction was priceless. :-) Edit, Feb 2023 - I must add, the scene and chorus were stunning - the officer's uniforms splendid... 🙂
totally agree, Brigitte's expressions, her breathing... she was feeling all of it .... and looked stunning I have to say. This performance should never be forgotten..or lost.
My first Rosenkavalier at Covent Garden in 1971 has Popp and Fassbaender with Jurinack as Marshallin. Totally overwhelming. But afterwards wished that I knew the piece before to appreciate how good it was. Great that we have this film, and great to see Gwyneth as Marshalling, who I later saw at CG, but would love to be able to see Sena's Marshallin
Let's not forget Anneliese Rothenberger's Sophie, imho right up there w Popp (taken from us too soon). The other Sophies mentioned are v. fine, but this is ART at the Center of heART.
This has never been surpassed. Popp's rapture is heaven on earth. So sad she is no longer with us. I do wonder about the negative votes -- it either means that the people either don't like the performance, have another performance (or performances) that they like better, or don't like the music at all. While it is a matter of taste, I would hope a negative vote would only be used in a post like this when the viewer feels the performance is poor or they disagree on how it's done. And I just can't see how anyone would think that here - even if they have other performances they prefer. I wish they would at least post s comment to explain their negative vote. I'm all for a civilized "discussion" on such matters. Otherwise, the negative votes are a mystery...

I love that bit about "es blieb nicht zerstört vom Regietheater-Unsinn." And I'd be willing to bet that the set designer was inspired by the Amalienburg.
Popp leaves Barbara Bonney in Kleiber's 1994 performance with the VSO way up the track, and the whole episode is in t this earlier performance with the Bavarian SO, more free and, especially with Fassbender, more dramatically convincing. This is living, breathing stuff, whereas the VSO performance seems a trifle cautious, very correct but more wooden.
boa tarde NapatMusic. estou ouvindo e apreciando "Presentation of the rose", sugestão do Regente Fabio Michetti da Filarmônica de MG e como sempre na escuta. obrigada.
It is coming of felicity that now can hear the wonderful vocal of the late soprano Qeen. Are you who listen to this music a person of what country ?Voce esta assistindo que este video e do pais ?
This is so funny (speaking as someone who thinks LP is perhaps the greatest voice ever, and above all, the one that gives me the most pleasure). The costumes are superb, the orchestra has the microphones - but the singers are "in another room". So we're left looking. LP's expression, rather supercilious close up, is presumably meant to be pleasant surprise. BF squirms a little, waiting her turn. Etc. Bet it was great from the Orchestra Stalls, though.
People say that Rosenkavalier takes significant steps away from Elektra. While that may be true in some aspects, the orchestration is still just as marvelous, and the vocal writing here can be more easily appreciated.
I adored Popp and loved Fassbänder. I revere Kleiber, an amazing artist...a genius. I was so fortunate to have been on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera with all three of these artists. However, I must say that Maestro Kleiber's tempi in this excerpt are just too fast. When he conducted Rosenkavalier at the Met this section was still too fast, but slower than this rendition. Nevertheless, of course, this is great music-making.
I'm afraid Lucia Popp spoilt all other Sophies for me. After hearing her both here and in Bernstein's studio recording all other Sophies pale in comparison.
I adore Popp. Battle was also wonderful and I had the luck to see her with Troyanos and Lear (her 2nd to last performance at the Met). I think it's all just degrees of greatness when it comes to them and Stich-Randall. I also love Bonney on the two videos she's in. though vocally she may not be at quite the same level, her portrayal of girlish exuberance is dead on. Especially in the TeKanawa, Solti video, which is 10 yrs. earlier than the Lott, Kleiber one.
Who ca-n give a negative bote to music ? If They don' like they should not listen ar all . I compare diffrent performances of the same opera and in the end like all moments . None îs less than the other .
You are correct, Popp came first and Battle did aspire to reach the heights of those who came before her. I have not heard Popp sing this role in her prime so it is hard to compare her with Battle in *her* prime which is available and stunningly beautiful.
Lucia Popp a divine Sophie - beautiful singing
