4:10 I'm not an expert, but I have never heard that the season has much if anything to do with cackle vs. no cackle. The vast majority of hens don't cackle when they fly down and if they do it's very subtle, regardless of the season. In fact, I think I hear it more in the fall and winter when birds are flocked up than I do in the spring. Denny Gulvas talks a ton about the cackle and why birds do vs. don't cackle. A lot more gobblers do fly down cackles than most people realize, too.
I learned something from you today. I'm new to turkey hunting and bought a CD on mouth calls that came with the pack of them. The two "pros" on the CD claimed that the heb makes the "Kee Kee" sound to assemble their poults after getting separated. Listened to it several more times to make sure what they said. Me, not knowing any better, assumed they were correct. Adter hearing you I looked for additional secondary sources. You are right. They are wrong. Hens yelp to assemble poults. Thanks for helping me learn something.
One thing to remember chalk is your friend on a box call try not to touch the where it makes contact you don't want the oils getting on there that's my 2 cents good video
@@Whitetail_Properties was hunting on a family friends farm until I heard that they had added 10 gauge and 12 gauge with removable chokes to the new gun ban....(very confusing) Stay safe and thx again.
@@Whitetail_Properties sorry I failed to mention I'm up in Ontario, Canada. They just banned some 1500 guns (specifically the AR styles and platform) and have since added more. Thanks again for the great video and help with the box call...Cheer's
@@randy6976 Oh good deal! Its unfortunate because the gun bans clearly affect hunters directly, especially in your situation. We wish you all the best!
Try this use the knitted camo gloves hold box so open end of lid away and gobble with between fingers hold on lid . Sounds great the gloves muffle much of the squeak .
Im 51 and just got my first, in the true sense of the word, turkey kill this past Saturday. Im hooked now. Be patient and be consistent. It will happen🇺🇸
Thank you soo much for your video!! I’m learning how to use box calls, slates or striker and mouth and I was wondering when do you put down the call and pick up your weapon of choice? Mine is bow. My ambition is to get my Turkey Grandslam with my bow. I feel it’s more challenging and I’m a staunch bowhunter. You answered many questions I had in this video. I do love that Kirby call. God bless and be safe in the woods. 🙏🏽
We're glad this video helped!! We did just post 4 new videos on turkey calling tips (check out our Turkey 101 playlist) there is some situational calling tips in those videos! We hope you get your grand slam, best of luck this spring and God Bless!
The problem is simple, regardless of the call you want to use you need to practice A LOT! Its not rocket science, I would walk around everywhere and practice and annoy the family, in the truck or wherever!
Turkey flock up and tend to use different vocalizations then they do in the spring. But your basic yelp is something that hen turkeys will do all year.
I have a box call and it is raw with no staining or finish at all. I was wondering if staining it would effect the performance of it. Any advice on giving it a stain finish or just leave it alone? Thanks for a reply.
If the call was manufactured without a stain we would have to assume that staining it could change the sound/pitch to some degree, how much would be hard to say. We don't think it would necessarily make the call un-operable though, many manufactures stain their wooden box calls.
Personally slate is also my favorite. Pot and peg style slates that is. There is slate box calls like dale outdoors lil sly box. That said even pure wood box calls have their place. Can be good to locate turkeys, or call thru wind, across large distance, high and raspy pitches and tones really easy. Box call acts Almost like a tuning fork for our other calls imho
thanks man
Used this video on my turkeys in the yard and they went nuts. Thanks!
Thats awesome!! They're cool bird to interact with!
I just bought a turkey caller to talk to my baby turkeys. 😅🤣😂
Thumb on the top advice was spot on! Knew I was doing something wrong! Thank you!!
Awesome! We love hearing that! Good luck the rest of your season!

We agree you have to practice! And don't just pick up the call the night before season opens and expect to call in every bird in the woods!!
Love it got one 😀
Is it good for a fall hunting also?

Where can I get that box?
There is a link in the description for the box call that Jeff was using!

@@Whitetail_Properties thanks for answering. I'll just leave it as is. Slight chance it'll get wet anyway. Not hard to replace even. 🦃
Like box/friction calls. No interest in mouth calls.
Ur cuttin sounds like a fox squirrel cutting lmao! Ditch the box and learn how to use a slate , a slate is the most realistic sounding call there is !
