    It's poetic justice that the one Weyoun who strayed the most from his intended role probably died the happiest, truly cared for by a Founder.

      Exactly! I am a Roman Catholic, and I imagine how wonderful would it be for me to die at the arms of Jesus of Nazareth, and to hear Him say to me that I have been a good and faithful servant and that I had His blessing. I think no matter how painful my death would be it would also be extremely peaceful and joyful.

    I found this short scene to be one of the most moving scenes in the Star Trek series. Weyoun 6's pleading with Odo to give him his blessing before he dies displays a kind of religious faithfulness seeking reassurance before death. Odo seems hardly respectful at all of the Founders and their work. Yet, he reluctantly gives Weyoun his blessing, probably from a sense of kindness not belief. The scene to me recalls a priest administering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to a dying parishioner. While Weyoun dies in peace, Odo struggles to give a blessing he apparently doesn't believe in, but yet does it out of compassion. The scene to me mixes faith, reassurance, compassion, and disbelief into a potent cocktail. Profound.

    Galaxy Quest, an extremely underrated flick, used the same warm and fuzzy tactic in it's saddest and most emotional scene a few years later. It's where the character played by Alan Rickman hated being worshipped by one of the aliens and told him to STFU and stop doing it. The alien gets shot and as he's dying in Rickman's arms, he plays the persona he was being worshipped for and tells him "he will be avenged." The alien dies with a smile on his face. You could hear the waterworks in the theater as that scary evil expression Rickman is famous for appears followed by cheers when he opens up a big can of wh00pass on the guy that shot him. Do a tube search for "Galaxy Quest By Grabthar's Hammer" and you'll see what I mean.

    I watched DS9 20 years ago, and I thought it was alright - I was slightly disappointed, expecting another TNG. Now, I am in awe of DS9 even more than TNG. These characters and species are all magnificent. I love the backstory of the Vorta, and their understandable reverence for the Founders. I love Odo's reluctance to accept his role as a God to Weyoun - and his final acceptance of it. I love the fact that, to the Founders, bringing Odo home was more important than the Alpha Quadrant itself. I find myself putting these episodes on repeat on Netflix, watching them over and over again, hoping that some day, we'll get more Trek like this.

      When you are younger and less mature, Picard seems like a god. When you are older and wiser, you realize he is just a well-spoken pedant. DS9 is a show far more in-touch with humanity, the realities of war and society.

    • @Kaefer1973
      @Kaefer1973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SukatoKjolen I really can't agree to that, I think it's closer to the opposite.
      TNG in general and Picard in particular go a bit too far with the "growing up of humanity" theme (in parts, certainly not true for the immature first 2 seasons or the last one), but DS9 doesn't go far enough.
      If humans are still as petty and violent as they are now or as they are depicted in DS9, it's just not realistic that they could be part of and even have a leading role in a diplomatically cooperating multiple species alliance (or even surive into a space age in the first place). I'd say the depiction of DS9 is closer to our present reality, but not the one realistic and making sense for the setting.

    It's nice to see a tender compassionate side of Odo in giving comfort to poor Weyoun 6...really moving scene. The Weyouns never got to be loved - no family or parents, used and thrown away by the founders, distrusted by the Federation (with good reason), no friends at all. Villainous though they were, that's worth bearing in mind. It's understandable they placed little value on lives, they didn't know any better. The only love they expected was in the form of a blessing from a founder. Weyoun 6 really deserved love, the only truly good one who lived too short a life. I remember Weyoun 4 watching Odo and his friends at a meal in To The Death, looking like the lonely kid in the cafeteria eating his lunch all by himself. And when he approached him to talk, his imploring face was heartbreaking (even though Weyoun 4 was not particularly nice). Loved that scene as well, his facial expressions were so beautiful.

    DS 9 is such a great Star Trek genre because of an abundance of scenes like this one that explore the dimension of human nature---our spiritual attributes often overlooked in an increasingly bleak morality-free materialism. Here we see qualities like compassion and selflessness highlighted.

He was totally prepared to kill Odo because he believed it was for the greater good, but as soon as it became unnecessary he was right back to a deep respect and deference. "I sincerely regret any inconvenience we may have caused you Odo". And he is 100% serious. Such an interesting character and dynamic

The problem now is that they try to be edgy and in your face. I think that is mostly because of the shorter seasons. A shame it wasn't standard practice on Federation to place people close to death into the transporter buffer the way Scotty did, to preserve their lives until they can get to a medical facility or somewhere they can properly be put into stasis so that medical staff could try to save them. I'm sure Bashir could have saved 6 if Odo had thought to do that, and the Federation would have gained a valuable asset.

    • @Cool70sfreak
      @Cool70sfreak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Montgomery Scott doing that in the first place was taking a huge risk himself, as he was risking pattern degradation, but more than that, when he did that, the configuration was running off Auxiliary power, which would run out on any standard ship as a reserve only meant for emergencies when main power couldn't be used. The Auxiliary power was renewable on the Jenolan because of the Dyson sphere constantly providing energy through the star it was harnessing, at least as I understand it. Something like that would have to take much more refining and working through before it could be used reliably. After all, one other person had been in there but suffered too much pattern degradation to be re-materialized.

    • @ClarinoI
      @ClarinoI 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cool70sfreak True, although I don't recall any mention of the Jenolan drawing power from the Dyson's Sphere. I figure with a Runabout with main power still online, the transporter buffer wouldn't use so much that Odo wouldn't be able to get back to DS9 before Weyoun 6's pattern degraded. After all, Scotty and Franklin were in the Jenolan's transporter buffer for nearly 75 years, whereas in this situation it would only have been a matter of hours. And I figured someone at Starfleet engineering would have been working on a safe way to do this since Scotty was rescued and the manner of his survival became known.

    It just occurred to me why DS9 is so powerful, in TNG they did those wet angst ridded emotional episodes that really went nowhere, Janeway was just pushy and dangerously stupid with lives of her crew. Enterprise was nothing but Archer running around do run and gun space adventures and TOS was more often or not just plain silly and unwatchable.
    DS9 cuts right to the heart of the folly of excessive military adventurism and the human tragedy that inevitably follows, it's such a shame that our world is yet to learn this lesson and no doubt we are going to do it the hard way and thanks for reading this far.

    DS9 is one of the best Star trek, because it deals so much with spirituality... In the past, we spent so much time talking about how being an all-powerful alien does not make you a God. DS9 however flips it on its head are gives respect to those aliens that actually do see other aliens as their gods like the Vorta and the Bajorans. And it also gave is the realisation that the Ferengi were deeply can I say spiritual about their rules of acquisition. And that the Federation were wrong about them also...
    The only thing that might have made this better is if a Federation officer and a 'bigoted' Cardassian or Romulan, for example, were stuck in a ship together, only for them to reveal to the Federation Officer that they thought it was stupid that the Vorta and Bajorans did see other aliens as gods. Only for the Federation Officer to reflect on their own bigoted views and accept that they should have more respect for others' ways of life.
    I think they tried that with Major Keira and Sisco but it was not strong enough for me.
