  • It played a pivotal role during the war of independence against the Dutch colonial rule. The Indonesian military continued to stamp its ascendency in Indonesia's political and economic spheres during 32 years of Suharto's presidency.
The role of the Indonesian military in politics however came to an end after the fall of former President Suharto in May 1998 in the midst of a severe economic crisis as public protests grew over rampant corruption, cronyism and nepotism within the government and the Suharto family.
Today, the Indonesian military exists as a professional fighting force which remains subservient to the civilian leadership. How is Indonesia able to thrive as the world's third largest democracy when several others fail?

It's strange that this almost 1 hour long documentary doesn't mention any role the US played in the military take over by General Suharto and the killing of about 1 million Indonesians. Vincent Bevins' highly acclaimed book "The Jakarta Method" documented this. Less than a year ago, Glenn Greenwald of the Intercept posted a 1.5 hour TH-cam video which included an interview of Bevins on his book. I'll share the link to the video.

This is a very good insight into recent Indonesia history. It is a balanced perspective. I do think that Indonesia has gone a long way (on the right track). Western media does not normally provide a fair analysis. However, if you compare Indonesia to other Muslim majority countries in the Middle East and if you compare it to countries like Thailand and Myanmar, the political system is definitely more mature. This is a country (where I genuinely think) has a potential to be great.

To be fair, if you looking and dig more deep, they did whatever they can do so Indonesia able to survive at the time. There are so many behind and beyond the scenes than whatever up to public, underground movement, to keep Indonesia intact, while a lot of western countries analysts at the time predict Indonesia to be failed country like Afghanistan. Indonesia 'spring' is years before Arab 'spring', it just like whatever political conspiracies things are tested first in Indonesia before other countries. While Muammar Khadafi ended being slayed and tortured by his own people, Soeharto buried like a king. While United States torn in the last election, ended in attack on the capitol hill, unlike Trump, Prabowo choose to join forces with Jokowi to defend the country. Indonesia is anomali.

Indonesia has a unique democracy in this world.
The power of the people with the abundance of demographics and the strength of natural disasters and their cultural diversity.
It requires a military force that is grounded and able to ward off outside interference and radicalisation that is increasingly threatening from within.

We should remember, the majority of the army involved in Indonesian Politics are Indonesian Ground Forces (TNI-AD), they are Soeharto's favorite. Indonesian Airforce is dumped during Soeharto regime, due to their past that shows loyalty to Soekarno.
The remnant of New Order that still involved in politics now are mostly came from TNI-AD too, and if you notice, the army Generals who always bring up the PKI issue have TNI-AD backgrounds. No one in Airforce or Navy bothers with PKI issue, since only Ground forces will triumph by bringing up the long gone communism/PKI issue.
