  • In the early hours of February 1st, 2021, the Myanmar military known as the Tatmadaw seized power of the country. The coup led to the ousting of democracy icon, Aung San Suu Kyi and brought Myanmar's decade long experiment with democracy to a crashing halt. A mass uprising soon broke out across the country. The security forces responded by launching a brutal crackdown against the protesters, turning some areas of the capital, Yangon into battle zones.
But why did the army stage a coup and shatter the hopes and dreams of many of its citizens? Will the violence and protests in the streets help restore democracy in Myanmar?

    • @condorX2
      @condorX2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Since you brought up North Korea..
I'll share this with you on the human tolls on interfering with other country affair.
North Korea is a good example.
Vietnam is even better if anyone wanna share their perspectives.
Approximately 150,000 troops from South Korea, the United States, and participating U.N. nations were killed in the Korean War, and as many as one million South Korean civilians perished. An estimated 800,000 communist soldiers were killed, and more than 200,000 North Korean civilians died.
If U.S. had stayed out of the Korean war, Korea would be one. Was it worth it for U.S to lose all those lives? What did Americans gain?
How does this question looks like now? You know, Korea was about to BE ONE before US stepped in. So one can also argue that it is the U.S who cause the death of thousands of Koreans.
You may then argue: But South Koreans live much better lives than their counterparts in the north, so life would have been better if South Korea had won the war!
Well, I am sorry to show you this GDP graph:
The North Koreans had been always richer than their southern neighbors until the 1970s(The North has much less population but similar GDP).
You may then ask: But the north was ruled by dictator! But if you do some research, you will surprisingly find that the South WAS too.
Wars are never about good or evil, they are always rooted to national interests. People just painted their enemy into evil to justify their own actions. So what was the root cause of Korean War ? Division of the world by USSR and The U.S. They divided Korea into two for their own interests, also happened in Germany, Vietnam and so on. Just like what the British Empire did in India and Pakistan. Which almost guarantees wars between those two parts.
So why would someone ask questions like this? Westerners were bombarded by negative informations from their “free” medias about China for decades. When they think about China, they firstly tell themselves China is bad, and then see China through this coloured lense so that they can never get a neutral view of China.

@@condorX2 North Korea attacked first. Foreign intervention was definitely needed. It is not a question of country unification or anything. Everything should be solved by peaceful means. If Korea was going to be unified, it should be done peacefully, not by force. If you think we should have stood by while injustice took place, I am appalled by your worldview.

Agree. Even today in 2021, this is still happening. People have forgotten how a vial of detergent was used by colin powell to wage an illegal WMD war against Iraq, killing millions of Iraqis.
Now they are using the same Cold War strategy to brainwash their citizens and the world for another hybrid war against Russia and China. Hence the Xinjiang cotton propaganda going on now spread by a homophobic right wing religious nut case German called Adrian Zenz.

The problems in Burma are actually differences between the National League for Democracy (NLD) party and the rest of the populace. The NLD won an almost landslide victory in the 2015 elections and ruled the country for the first time until 2020. The leader of the party Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was very popular but her government couldn't achieve much in its five- year term. According to many independent poles, the party will surely win the elections in 2020 but it can't win an outright majority to form a government. It seemed that they were unwilling to form a coalition government and tried everything in their power to get a majority. They used many tricks before the elections and all other parties were distressed about that. Many political parties before and after the elections met with the commander-in-chief of the army and asked him to intervene. In the elections the NLD won overwhelmingly getting about 82% of the votes to everybody's astonishment. The parties and the army pointed out the irregularities and asked the Elections Commission but it refused to answer under the order of the President who is vice president of the NLD and who appointed the Commission. The army asked to get answer many times to no avail and decided to get power properly under the constitution when the NLD moved to open a new parliament and form their government. The army arrested the president and NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who instructed her followers in a prepared statement to revolt against the military. Since then NLD members started protests in the streets for about two weeks rather peacefully though. When the army didn't budge they changed to violent demonstrations arousing mostly young people and even young children. Slowly the confrontations become between the NLD youth members and the army in the streets and NLD and the rest of the populace in other areas and in social life. However, as a few hundreds of demonstrators were killed in the streets, the world knows only that the army used deadly force against unarmed civilians. The NLD apparatchiks know how to approach international political leaders to get sympathy while the army leaders concentrate on the rule of law and order in the country. Hence most of the world think the disagreement was between the army and the NLD. The truth is the army is only the caretaker for the preservation of democracy at the request of all political parties and the general public except the NLD party.

We must remember what Lee Kuan Yew used to say about the prospects of political system democracy in underdeveloped societies.
This American or UK Style one man one vote political system has no cultural, political, societal, economic, or dialectical antecedents in several of the Asian, Latin American or African Countries.
Most of these nations in the three continents were colonialized, hence, they have a long way to go in transforming and successfully evolving themselves, before, they can accept the fact-value dichotomy that exists within the realm of social and political philosophy.
Nevertheless, the torturing or abuse of common civilians by an unelected organization such as the military cannot be morally defended by anyone.
I hope peace returns to both Thailand and its neighbour Myanmar.

How did they become a murderous regime?
      This might shed some light.
The United States does have a well-documented history of interfering and sometimes interrupting the workings of democracies elsewhere. It has occupied and intervened militarily in a whole swath of countries in the Caribbean and Latin America and fomented coups against democratically elected populists.
The most infamous episodes include the ousting of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953 - whose government was replaced by an authoritarian monarchy favorable to Washington - the removal and assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961, and the violent toppling of socialist Chilean President Salvador Allende, whose government was swept aside in 1973 by a military coup led by the ruthless Gen. Augusto Pinochet. (American dad made a episode on this one with the dancing dictator?)
Aside from its instigation of coups and alliances with right-wing juntas, Washington sought to more subtly influence elections in all corners of the world.
      www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/10/13/the-long-history-of-the-u-s-interfering-with-elections-elsewhere/
CIA involvement in coup 1965 is one great example on how the west took sides by supplying weapons, made propaganda and indirectly killed more than 3 million innocent lives. Their strategy is based on "divide and conquer". This document was declassified by CIA because many activists around the globe condemn the war crimes of US and their allies. Not only that, CIA overthrew the legit president of indonesia and replaced it with a corrupt person who supported the US. That's how US mining company 'freeport' got hold of indonesian biggest gold mine.
      nsarchive.gwu.edu › filesPDF
Declassified files outline US support for 1965 indonesian massacre - National Security Archive.
      -Jeff Lith
CIA always worked with NED. (National Endowment for Democracy). They always try to destabilize any country with different ideology. All started way back after the end of world war 2, the cold war started. US sees other ideology as dangerous and feel the need to bring democracy to all countries, so in other words, every US presidents starting from harry s truman are all involved. Believing democracy as a perfect system that all countries MUST adopt. This made US act aggressively and invade nations with different ideology, creating wars and chaos around the globe.
      -G
I saw this while doing a research on "Nazis and CIA" on Google search.
Augsburg’s SS unit performed “special duties,” a euphemism for exterminating Jews and other “undesirables” during the Second World War.
Although he was wanted in Poland for war crimes, Augsburg managed to ingratiate himself with the U.S. CIA, which employed him in the late 1940s as an expert on Soviet affairs. Recently released CIA records indicate that Augsburg was among a rogue’s gallery of Nazi war criminals recruited by U.S. intelligence agencies shortly after Germany surrendered to the Allies.
The CIA’s use of an extensive Nazi spy network to wage a clandestine campaign against the Soviet Union.

    Just a note for the comparison between Tatmadaw and the Indonesian Army (formerly ABRI, now TNI) or Thai Army (Kong Thap Thai);
For all of their fault the Indonesian and Thai was/is more integrated with the general population than the Burmese ones. The Burmese Army were by large cordoned in a compound after the 1988 coup and are given more privileges as a military member, including by systemically encourages them to intermarry within the military family themselves. White ABRI members were given the privileges and are politically involved to the max in the Indonesian military era, Soeharto's regime has never went as far as encouraging a separate military "caste" unlike the Tatmadaw's higher ups after '88. The same is the case with Kong Thap Thai where the military COs and higher ups, while as prominent as they could be, is not as "gated" as their Tatmadaw counterparts.
Another fact that is relevant when we're talking about Nation-Building in South East Asia is that the Tatmadaw is also overwhelmingly recruited from the majority Buddhist Bamars with few concessions or high positions given to ethnic minorities. Now, in Indonesia this was never the case as during the military era, the ABRI was ironically one of the more inclusive institution for its "indigenous" ethnic/religious minorities (barring of course, the ethnic Chinese). While the KTT was (and still is) more homogenous in its makeup, they still incorporate many minorities, particularly in the border areas such as Karen scouts and Malay .The Tatmadaw on the other hand is composed overwhelmingly of Buddhist Bamars with ethnic minority soldiers channelled to separate "auxiliary" groups, often co-opted from losing rebel groups. Hence it's easier to create a vacuum when you separate them not only physically but also socially from the rest of the society, especially the non-Buddhist Bamar ones.
So you can see a Hindu Balinese in the ABRI or a Muslim Malay in Kong Thap Thai advancing on their career and the armed forces was never centred solely to "favour" Muslim Javanese or Buddhist ethnic Thais. One of the most prominent ABRI commander-in-chief was a Catholic Eurasian (Leonardus Moerdani) and the KTT commander-in-chief that ousted Thaksin is a Muslim Thai of Persian descent (Sonthi Boonyaratglin). This level of "inclusivity" in ABRI/KTT where these minority figures are not solely figureheads but are actually some very powerful individuals could not (and probably never be) seen in contemporary Tatmadaw. When you develop a military that solely serves to a group and refrains from integrating the minorities, you're heading straight to a recipe of unending oppression and civil war.
