The Indonesian army will not allow Timor to trigger the disintegration of their hard-won Javanese Empire. Lt. General Susilo Yudhoyono, the army’s Chief of Staff is unequivocal: “The most threatening factor is the possibility of social disintegration, we have to prevent it.” The military will not relinquish power to Habibie, “We still have yet to believe that the politicians can lead and develop the country as required,” says General Argus Widjaya, head of Aceh operations. Troops jump in time to a disco beat - a piece of regimented frivolity aimed at showing the army’s commitment to change. But change does not include the break-up of Indonesia. From Timor to Aceh the army’s message is clear: separatism brings death and the international community won’t be there quickly enough to save you.

I thought Free Aceh Movement is no more post tsunami? This documentary feels ancient.
After the tsunami Indonesia shot thousands including entire villages suspected of wanting independence, between the tsunami and shooting, Indonesia managed to silence the region long enough to do a deal offering to make Aceh's clerics caliphates and an Islamic (Sharia law) state within Indonesia on condition that they silence the calls for independence. So instead of freedom the people of Aceh got an Islamic state and the terror of not being able to risk asking if anyone prefers freedom over sharia law; its a situation that Jakarta like any colonial power enjoys.
Andrew Johnson Weird that people keep saying that the separatists are the one demanded for sharia, most the acehnese people also asked for it. Their stance on religion pretty comparable to malaysias, die hard muslims unlike the rest of indonesians.

It is somewhat true, since during soeharto era there's a policy called "dwifungsi abri" literally mean armed forces 2 functions. They both hold function in military and political, most of governer/mayor etc back then has military background. But thankfully there's none of them nowadays since the sby era to not let person who serves in politic/military to work on those two vice versa
