      I always think about shit like this when I see advanced modern tech. Imagine going back in time and plucking a 12th century European woodsman who's spent 3 full days with an axe and 10 other men clearing out amd dragging out *maybe* 30 trees, bringing him here today, to show him this. His mind would be absolutely blown. He'd be in disbelief that *technically* all the materials needed to create this machine came from the earth. The very Earth he walked on 700 years ago, they just didn't have the means of utilizing it yet.

      @@hustleman4880i‘m experienced with this kind of equipment and fair enough, your observation is right! let me explain, the red thing you see at your timestamp is the so called „head“, from the outside you can see various parts like its delimbing knifes and its chainsaw. if you look closely at 0:05 (you have to stop the video in an exact moment when the inside of the head is exactly facing the camera) you‘ll see an open spot with something that appears to be a wheel in the lower half of the head, right above the chainsaw. that‘s exactly what‘s measuring the lenght of every log. when the tree is cut down, the operator pushes a button which turns on the forwarding wheels of the head (as seen on the sides of the head at 0:05 ) as the tree gets pushed back out of the head, the small wheel in the middle of the head is turned and as it turns, it measures the legth of the log. precise cuts are done due to preprogrammed length options in the computer of the machine, which gets chosen by the operator before every tree is cut down. the forwarding wheels turn as long as the operator presses its button but stop automatically as a preprogrammed length is reached. the operator may conduct slight changes by a few inches by pressing either the forwarding or backwarding button, just as much as it‘s needed for every specific log. the current length of the log is always displayed on the display inside the cabin, so the operator always knows what the length of the log is. when the length of the log is optimal, the operator presses the button of the chainsaw which then cuts the log. after cutting the log, the measurment is automatically reset to 0. as we see, sometimes delimbing a tree may take some time and needs more that one take, thus confusing the measurement wheel and displaying a wrong length. this is not a problem because as you pointed out correctly the operator goes to the start of the new log and cuts off a small piece of in order to reset the length.

    • @moniquem783
      @moniquem783 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rachel. Would you happen to know roughly how long it would take to clear about 80 hectares of plantation timber? I don’t know the species as yet, but I’m going to look at a property tomorrow that’s right next to a plantation. I have issues with my ears so I want to know what I’m getting myself into if I buy it. These machines are certainly less noisy than I was expecting! If it’s all over and done with in a few days I could handle that. I would just hide inside those days and do some canning or sewing or something. If it goes on for a month that might start to get a bit difficult.

    • @rachelspencer9736
      @rachelspencer9736 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moniquem783 well I asked Google what a hectare is, and she said it is equivalent to 100 acres. And so if you say 80 hectares then that is like 8000 acres which would take a very long time. But exactly how long depends on who tis. In charge of harvesting the unit, and how large of an operation that they are running. Not only that, but I imagine that they won't be next to your new property for very long, if they are good at their jobs. they will be far away from earshot before you know it! You could always make a special trip to one of their logging sites, and staying at a safe distance, see what they accomplish in a day's work and how unbearable the sound is, before risking the purchase. Personally, if you like the property, I think you wouldn't be disappointed for buying it. Modern mechanized Logging is usually extremely productive, and they would be just a memory before ya know it. Where I live,. The work is on montaintops with large cable towers that yard each stick up steep mountainsides, that the men under the lines can struggle trying to move around on. So it's tough for me to give you a precise answer. Tower logging is on the extreme side of the industry. And I am guessing the loudest as well!

    • @moniquem783
      @moniquem783 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rachelspencer9736 I think Google is mixing up historical and modern measurements somehow lol. A hectare is 10,000m2, which is about 2.5 acres. So the plantation is about 200 acres. Sounds teeny tiny now! 😂😂😂 The plantation is all very neat rows and there are roads through it which seem to follow the slight hill there (definitely not a mountain, there’s one line on the topographic map lol) so it looks like it has all been planned to be very efficient. I did manage to track down the company that manages it and called them to ask how long it would take. She had to go and ask someone else and said she would call back but didn’t. It was getting near to the end of the day when I called so hopefully she’ll call on Monday so I have certainty. I’m thinking it will be okay. As far as noisy neighbours go, yes when they’re there it will be noisy, but apparently they only tend the trees 3 times in their 37-40 year growth so overall it will be far less of a disturbance than the current teenager next door and his almost daily music and weekly parties, and the guy across the road with his Harley, and the new people who just moved in next to Harley guy who had such a massive argument last night that both the lady next door and I opened our front doors to check what it was at exactly the same time. Way to introduce yourselves to the neighbours 🙄 And then there’s the new road connecting 2 highways that’s maybe 500m away so now I hear traffic noise constantly too. I really will not miss this place! When I first saw the plantation of course my heart dropped and I imagined a huge amount of people with chainsaws and axes lol. Now that I’ve watched a few videos I can see it really is extremely productive and won’t be anywhere near as noisy as I first imagined. Yes, I think it will be fine. What I will do though is when I talk to the girl from the company again, I’ll also ask for the schedule for that plantation so that I know well ahead of time that say in September of 2029 they’ll be there thinning trees and I can make sure I plan my outdoor projects to not be at that same time, and if there’s something that must be done, like starting seeds in September, I can set up a potting bench in the house ahead of time, knowing that I won’t want to do it outside. I also won’t throw out the collection of noise cancelling headphones I’ve tried here so I can wear those as I feed the animals if I need to. The agent did say the house is really well insulated so I don’t think I’ll need them inside.
      Thank you so very much for responding! I appreciate it so much! You really have set my mind at ease. I will go there today knowing that if I love the place, it will be fine. Thank you!!!

    I know we need wood for many things but these machines can cut down and strip a tree in less than a minute each at this pace they could wipe out many acres in a day and they don't bother to select cut the just clear cut and then come back and plant a 1 inch seedling hoping it survives and can grow so they can do it again in 40 years

    • @philsmith2444
      @philsmith2444 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s very little clear cutting taking place. Most of the time they’re told to take all trees of species x that are a certain diameter or smaller, and sometimes the forester marks the trees that need to go.

    Pretty cool, if they would have had these in the Russian Gulag, they could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. But it's not like the Party gave a crap though..

    Does anyone know how much is generally gained by purchasing one of these machines, eliminating a team or teams no longer needed due technology, and being able to complete more jobs due to efficiency and better overall durability?
