    I am a cassette deck lover and own a couple of dozens of them. I also own and repaired two used WM-D6C for my own fun and use. I have to say their spec of 40-15k Hz FR is not telling you the whole truth of how it sounds doing recording. They are impressive and their Dolby circuits are great.
    Your work on this is thoroughly enjoyable! Thank you!

      I have two on them. One is in fully working condition one has issues with the capstan (it's too week to pull the tape, it stops when the leader becomes the actual tape th-cam.com/video/1n1s_mtOzUA/w-d-xo.html).
      I love how this guy sounds.

      I actually do it to get paid for ad revenue but with everyone blocking ads it gives me little incentive to continue.
      So for those that enjoy the channel turn off the ad blocker if subscribe to TH-cam premium because that's the only way i can continue. I do get the stats and the news is depressing. I remember when the first Walkman came out and some guy I knew bought one in Japan and brought it back here to the states. Everyone was so impressed how something so small could produce sound so big on those small headphones. What year was that? Early 80's in there somewhere.... I have the early
    WM-F1 which I believe is the first one to have FM radio analog tuner. Digital is obviously better, but I have always been fascinated by magnetic recording machines of all kinds since I was a kid.

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought one in the UK and a 2nd (for someone else) on a business trip to Japan in 1990. I absolutely loved this unit... I was heavily into ambient sound recording 'on location' and this unit was just a great quality recorder. Very confidence-inspiring - until both units the speed control failed and it suddenly seemed to have a mind of its own. The other person got it fixed (not cheap) and I think still has her unit. I couldn't afford to fix mine and it sat in a gear box for the next 20 or so years until I finally - foolishly - threw it away. But in truth, any one of the Tascam digital recorders I've used in the last 15 years outperforms the Sony so it wouldn't really have any modern application any more. But it was a fine piece of kit for its time.

    Dave nice job, I bet the subscriber who sent this Sony Walkman to you is an engineer,

    I've tried the rubber rings from eBay.
    They have excellent reputation and many people swear by them. There have been many reports on TapeHeads that they work very well.
    However that was not my experience. The original rubber ring was working perfectly and my W&F was as expected (around 0.04%). The eBay one was way higher than this.
    For the WM-D6Cs, the rubber ring is not necessarily a replacement item, as they hold very well, unless they were left in play with pause and the axle made an indentation.
    Good repair!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right. The way to kill the drive tire is to rewind or ff a tape and forget about it. It hits the end then the motor power goes off but doesn't release the motor from tire. Engaging any mode with no batteries will also leave a dent.

    • @svenschwingel8632
      @svenschwingel8632 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      New rubber parts do need time to walk themselves in, especially belts. Idler tyres, unless they are already cracked or - as mentioned - have a dent, can usually be treated to a second life with fine-grit sandpaper and rubber renewal to restore them to working order. From my experience, excessive W&F usually doesn't emerge from a single cause, especially with the more complex tape mechanisms.

    I can well remember cursing Sony and all the other brands for making the walkmans a real pain to work on.
    Where i worked were authorised Sony dealers, but if we wanted the special extension leads and jigs we had to pay
    for them, only the Sony repair centers got them for free in the UK.
    Most of the issues were mechanical as the customers would use them on the beach with sand playing havoc
    once it crept onto any grease.

      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a new belt to replace, but I suspect the gear has seized too.
    I'm visually impaired so working on tiny components is a challenge. But this video will help a lot.
    I've already opened up my Sony previously, but wasn't too sure what to remove to get it fixed, so this helps a lot.
    If you're ever in Derry in Ireland I'll get you a pint to say thanks for the video.
    Ignore the unskilled trolls. They have zero industry experience.

    I got one today, and the seller says it worked off adapter and batteries, but has the speed issue. I couldnt get it to turn on with batteries at all. I dont have an adapter, or want to use one unless its the right one. I get 5.7v on the battery holder connector pads, but when in the player im only seeing .61v where in comes into the board from the battery holder. This seems kind of odd since it isnt passing through any circuits before that point, i dont think. Someone said the dc-dc needs to be bridged but i wasnt sure. Any ideas? I also have a genuine CX chip which another seller had extra from a few years back. He had used one in his broken one and got it working fine, so the spare one should be OK. Hopefully.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tire generally only fails when left in pause or play without batteries where the motor sits engaged to the flywheel with no power which causes a dent in the rubber. Back in the day when we service those units we never change the tire if it was shot we change the entire flywheel with the tire attached. It was generally changed because the bearing failed and became loose which resulted in high wow and flutter and noise coming from the mechanism

    (a later model WM D6 (SN 25058) with 2 earphone sockets) has a mechanical problem - the head plate won't engage with the capstan - leaving about 1 mm between the capstan and the pinch roller, and as a result the motor won't run. But I can't for the
    life of me figure out what might be stopping its movement. Any ideas? Stop/eject mechanism works.

I have a clear plastic cassette so I can see the 1-2mm gap so having a tape present makes no difference. Also, at 3:37 in the video, he tests the capstan/pinch roller and one can see it turning.

      I wouldn't say it's the best in the world, it's heavy as hell and expensive, meaning if it gets stolen you're fucked - I'd stick with a decent or mid range walkman over this, if you want to stay dd, the walkman D3 is better for portability but again, expensive. This would be good for field recording and long term playback in an environment where you can't fit a tape deck, but if you have space for a tape deck, that is way better than this for the price

    I don't understand peoples need to correct anothers repair methods or work practices. If you don't do it their way, well you are an idiot and they feel the need to tell you so. If we were all made out of the same mold then perhaps we would do things the same way. Anyone who was, or is married, knows what I mean.
    I watch many different TH-cam channels on electrical repair, and each tech is diverse and different, as snowflakes. Many of the arm chair quarterbacks out there only repeat what they have heard second hand from other content creators and have not worked in a production shop where things need to move in a timely manner, or even worked in the business on their own.
    I have about had it with the "you got to change every capacitor" persons. If it is mine, and if it is not in a critical circuit I will change it if it is one that is known to piss on the board or when it is symptomatic or fails, thank you very much. Not counting those wax paper caps and the like.

      Exactly. Wax/paper caps have to go on tube gear. The rest are ok unless they have failed or are leaking.

    Germany and China are not even on the same continent hah, Germany is in the center to west of Europe and China is on the far east out of Europe's border, they are almost of the opposite sides of the globe :D

      It was a joke.
      It was supposed to have been made in Germany according to the eBay seller but likely came out if of China.
