The formula that Kevin Feige discovered with the Marvel films is nearly identical to what Bruce Timm used with the DCAU over 25 years ago. In some respects, Timm pulled the formula off even better. This is still an incredible film that doesn't seem dated at all. The same can be said for the rest of the Animated Series as well.

Having a starting point with a central character
Iron Man = Batman TAS/New Batman Adventures
Introducing other future recurring minor characters and plot devices in that initial film or series.
Starting building another main central characters
Captain America = Superman the Animated Series
Same thing, introduce other minor characters or plot devices in that movie or series that will be recurring in the future
      Big Cross Over
Avengers = Justice League/Justice League Unlimited

Whether this is the best Batman movie of all time or the best animated Batman movie, we can agree on this: it was by far the best movie about the Caped Crusader in the 90s. :)

UC BvS, all Nolam films and especially the DKR, Under the Hood and Year One toon films are all better. Phantasm still holds up but the short run-time and a slightly sluggish 3rd act can´t be denied. 8,5/10
It was still the best Batman film until Return of the Joker and Begins came along.
PS: It´s the classic writers who know Batman best over @ WB but the modern runs by Morrison, Snyder and King all delivered.

    • @oscarstainton
      @oscarstainton 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

resident grigo I would say Batman Begins is my favourite Batman film, and the one I would personally consider the best. But that is no discredit to Mask of the Phantasm or even The Dark Knight. Despite my problems with BvS, I really liked Ben Affleck's turn as Batman.

I still remember the unreality of the first set pictures of Begins. The promising Year One and Beyond film all died to give us that trilogy, but it worked out in the end.
I read every Batman and ´Tec issue since 1970 and much more, inducing the first few Golden Age years. Tons of Superman too. Snydra 100% nailed his film in the complete cut but you need a PHD in DC canon to follow along at parts.

This movie made me feel depressed as hell when I watched it as a kid. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but I remember it making me feel sad for Batman. Especially that scene when he's telling his parents how their death doesn't hurt as bad because of Andrea, but stil goes on to become Batman because of what happens to their relationship.

This review was published over 2 years ago but a couple of months ago Sony Music Entertainment (SME) claimed part of the audio used in the opening and end trailers and blocked the video worldwide. I wasn't aware of this until some of my followers had notified me. I disputed the claim but sadly a day before the counter claim expired SME gave me an offer, they said I could cancel my dispute or i will be given a copyright strike. I chose not to proceed further and cancelled my dispute but the review would still remain blocked. So i've re-edited the trailers and removed the music I had originally used.

    Two notes:
1 - In a separate review, I believe a retrospective, Siskel & Ebert said they only thing they didn't like was 'whoever did the Joker's voice'. I would have loved to see their faces when they found out.
2 - The Phantasm was based partly on The Reaper from Batman Year Two, although some story details were obviously changed for the movie.

Well done on the editing in the end. I nearly cried, seeing the tragedy of Bruce and Andrea of what could have been and the paths they took. MotP, is indeed one of the more underrated Batman movies that got at the heart of the character. The reasons for his non killing rules, how ultimately he does want to be done with avenging but knowing he can make that difference creates an internal guilt that eats at him until he's unrecognizable. The Phantasm is simply that dark mirror to Bruce/Batman making us as viewers know what makes him tick and what could have been. Ultimately, from acting and especially Walker's haunting rendition of her TV score, this stands as the best rendition of the character. Other live action adaptations have yet to touch this, arguably, even Nolan hasn't reached this level.

I adore this movie, which surprises me, because it does everything I would normally hate seeing in a Batman flick. To me, having a movie focus on Bruce's personal life instead of the criminal cases which are his obsession is like seeing a Sherlock Holmes story or a James Bond movie that focuses on their family or past instead of their adventures. Extra worse when they introduce a character out of nowhere to be the love interest. So how did this movie manage to pull it off and be so compelling? I have no idea, but yeah. One of the best superhero movies of all time.

I happen by chance to stumble upon the 25th anniversary of this movie. Hadn't seen the movie since I was pretty young. They were playing it in select theatres again. Went and had the whole room to myself.
Felt like a kid again. Movie is so damn good.

As an American, I didn't even know this had a theater release. I just assumed it was direct to video. This is the first I've heard that it ever had a theater release. Also, Mark Hamill is a better Joker than Ledger. Sorry Nolanites, but it's a fact and you just have to deal with it.

irllcd13 Ledger and indeed the whole Nolan series is overrated as hell.

Oliver there was the retro Batman as well from the toy range.
PS did you know they drew it on black paper? To give it that 'Dark Noir' feel as the animators nicknamed the style

2018 update: the film was released on Blu-Ray and remastered in HD on July 25, 2017 and came packaged along with the Animated Series Blu-Ray box set on October 30, 2018, but even then, it still doesn't have enough bonus features (really just the original trailer) and has no chapter selection menu. Fathom Events screened the film in theaters on November 12, 2018 (coincidentally also the passing of Stan Lee, but I digress) to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

I missed out the cinema screening of Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm on November 12, 2018. I really wish that Warner Brothers had released it again in 2019 as part of Batman's 80th anniversary alongside the original four live action movies. As much as I enjoyed seeing Batman (1989) on the big screen since I was too young to see it back in the day, I really wish that I had gotten a chance to see Mask Of The Phantasm. Hopefully I will get a chance in the future, along with The Transformers: The Movie (1986) this is one animated movie that I really want to see on a proper cinema screen.

@@JB0071051982 Funny, you and I saw opposite movies. I saw the Fathom Events for The Transformers: The Movie and Batman: Mask of The Phantasm both in 2018 and you saw the live action Batman films in theater while didn't. I didn't even know they were screening them last year.

Wow totally forgot about this awesome movie. Gonna buy it while X-Mas shopping. This got me thinking I wonder how many people end up buying movies after watching your videos? You ever think of incorporating the Amazon Affiliate Program with your reviews/retrospectives? Would be nice to get a cut of the revenue with a big enough audience but than again most dudes will just watch these old movies free online. Cheap Bastards!

My favourite Batman film and series from initial launch to date, I'm still collecting toys and other items from the series. I would love to see you review individual episodes from the series themselves episodes like - "Heart of Ice", "Almost got "Im" I really think they have a huge story to tell for the character of Batman and the villains in terms of development. The Mr Freeze we see today is largely adapted from the Heart of Ice episode and is in my mind the greatest animated story they told. Keep up the excellent reviews Oliver.

"Best animated shows of the 90s." I disagree with you Oliver over that statement because Batman is better than that. It's one of the best animated shows ever. Also, this movie is a masterpiece that still holds the standard for animated superhero films.

Thank you Oliver! Always enjoy your work.
I always felt that this movie and the animated series were the best of Batman, in adaptation and execution. The live action movies (yes, including the Tim Burton stuff) went from boring to achingly silly. None of them ever grabbed me and were mostly a rambling mess.
The team that made Mask Of The Phantasm "got it".

While I like it better than the Nolan films, I think that I would have to chalk that up to nostalgia. Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamil and the rest of the cast will always be the first thing I think of when I think of Batman.
Even ignoring that nostalgia however, the Batman/Superman animated movie ("world's finest" I think it was called) far FAR surpasses the recent Batman vs Superman film. By a country mile. High recommend it!
