In all honesty Jurassic Park 1 is and always shall be the film in the series. Jurassic Park 2 is good but not a great movie like the original. Jurassic Park 3 was the worst film of the series. I've not seen Jurassic Park 5.
Daniel Williamson Personally (and this is just my true and honest personal opinion talking here), I think all three films in the original trilogy are EQUALLY as good (and yes, that includes "Jurassic Park 3")." Now "Jurassic World" has a few tiny issues with it that I feel don't make it equally as good as the original trilogy (again, in my opinion), but they weren't enough to ruin it for me, and I do enjoy it for the most part. Besides, I loved how "Jurassic World" presented/handled the concept of a working dinosaur theme park, something that I feel the film series as a whole benefited from exploring.

The animations were so mind-blowing at the time that Spielberg made sure to not reveal an animated dino in any of the trailers!

Jurassic Park was my childhood. I can watch the movie over and over I know every line and it still never gets old. When I hear the main theme it brings so much emotion and nostalgia. The novel is just as good too.
The novel was incredible. I read it for the first time in the early 2010s and thought "why the fuck didnt they make THIS movie?!"
I was 18 when I went to watch this on first release - The scene when they first come across the dinosaurs in the field still brings a tear to my eye - I feel old.
John Williams is going to go down as one of the best musical composers in the entirety of human history.
For me he is #1. Star Wars theme , for me, is greatest all time peice of music.

For those that love movies for all of their history might want to try Max Steiner (King Kong, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind), Milkos Rozsa (The Thief of Bagdad, Double Indeminity, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes), Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, All That Money Can Buy, Vertigo, Taxi Driver, The Ghost and Mrs Muir), Ennio Morricone (A Fistful of Dollars, Cinema Paradiso, The Mission), John Barry (Connery Bonds, Somewhere in Time, Midnight Cowboy). Williams is the latest of several giants, perhaps the sixth great one of the last century.
This is one of my favorite films of all time. I watched it when I was 5, and it introduced me to Spielberg, CGI, and suspense/horror. I love this movie to bits.

The T-Rex roar made it worth going to see it twice.
I'm going to venture to say, this is the best cinematic experience humanly created. I personally saw it 6 times in theaters.
The CGI is still amazing and even better than most CGI films today. That's 23 years difference, truly movie magic!

Yourgs Vazouras It's at least smart at building up all the chaos in the second half.
In general though Spielberg's films (at least his blockbusters anyway) aren't particularly deep or anything, you watch them for thrills. But oh what thrills they deliver. I'd also say that most of Spielberg's movies are structured like amusement park rides, including Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan (the former feels like Spielberg making an "Oscar movie" for his usual audience).
Spielberg used to be my favorite filmmaker. Since then I've seen movies like Terminator 1 & 2, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Pulp Fiction, and Goodfellas, and those movies' directors have left more of an impression on me.

My daughter, who is 9, just watched Jurassic park for the first time a few weeks ago, and she lost it when the rex is after them in the jeep, i mean eyes wide, mouth open! And when he roars and you see him get closer in the rear view mirror! She loved it! This movie will never get old!

I was a dinosaur fanatic as a child. And Jurassic Park was my absolute favorite film in the dinosaur movie genre.

I remember when I saw Jurassic Park at the cinema (theatre in Ireland) when it first came out, the scene where your man sitting on the toilet gets eaten by the T-Rex, everyone in the place stood up, clapped and cheered for about a minute straight. It was so realistic at the time that people couldn't handle it and it drove them crazy. No bs. Good times

The Jurassic park trilogy is amongst my favorite movies of all time. I just hope one day they will do a R rated version, closer to the book. Bring on the blood and gore.

I love your intros. They're better than the official previews. I'm excited to rewatch Jurassic Park right now regardless I've seen it hundreds of times.
The whole T-Rex Paddock part is handled much better in the novel, where the T-Rex simples picks up and throws the Land Cruser in a near by tree.
Although it's not a film that I grew up with, it's a film that gets better every single time I watch it!
I don't think any other Jurassic movie has captured the people reacting and acting with the dinosaurs like Jurassic Park has. I feel it was less about the dinosaurs with that film and more about the people put in a situation with something unpredictably dangerous in the form of dinosaurs.
I think Jurassic World was geared towards seeming fun and cool at certain parts that Jurassic Park would have just maintained helpless terror and true human inferiority. The T'Rex, raptors, and even running from the leaf eaters inspired a certain amount of fear. Even the Triceratops scene had the impending storm to it, inspiring the feeling of imminent doom. It was almost like they were toying with the idea of creating something as beautiful and as dangerous as the ocean, itself, in Jurassic Park. I'll give The Lost World credit on making a high tense T'Rex scene where they were waiting to get their baby back.
I think it was just the audience and the difference in a generation and it was probably the best choice that could be made for each film. Jurassic World definitely had the best odds and, in my opinion, did what it set out to do as well as it could manage.
The T-Rex had a blender and an SUV sound - mixed with other animals roaring. I remember reading that later and said "I knew it was blender!". It was fantastic. I remember being blown out of my mind as a kid in theatres - just from the sound effects alone.

I'll say it: This and Jaws are my favorite movies of all time, all flaws considered. These films were a huge influence on my childhood: they're the reason for my keen interest and knowledge of dinosaurs and animals general.
And also why I say Spielberg was a bigger part of my childhood than Disney.
Spielberg once said that he had always had hopes to make a meaningful Jaws sequel but never really believed in „re-newing“ the shark. Instead, he wanted to find a predator similarly scary. When Crichton published JP, Spielberg instantly had been given his very own „Jaws 2“ script.
Disney was too babyish for me. Their features films felt condescending to me even as a child. When it came to cartoons, I was always preferred Warner Bros and Hannah Barbera as they more risky and subversive.
As usual, totally worth the wait. Your work is setting the quality bar for reviews across the board, my friend. Keep it up!

After seeing Jurassic World, my intense love and nostalgia for this film has been overwhelming lately. Ive watched it every time it's been on TV and dug up my old DVD. This is an airtight movie in every sense of the word. The excitement, the music, the characters, the effects, the pure adventure. It's the whole package. The fact that Steven Spielberg did this and Schindler's List in the same year only solidifies him as one of the all-time greatest directors. Greta review Oliver!
JP is the kind of film you can watch countless times and still want to revisit it ! That's the sign of a great one :)
I remember being with my dad at a store when we bought the VHS of Jurassic Park. Must have been 5 or 6. In the store, I just stared at that amazing cover--the skeleton T-Rex, the stark black and red color scheme, letting my imagination run away.
In the summer of 93, I had a job working at a movie theater long since disappeared. We had to go in and pick up the trash from the audience, we waited until the lights came up and then started cleaning up. The end score of Jurassic Park is burned into my memory from that. Plus movie theaters are one of the few public places left where people think nothing of throwing their trash on the floor (as they know it will be cleaned up), and people left A LOT of trash on those floors. That takes me back in more ways than one.
Your spot on about the visual effects especially the CGI not going overboard, I can't seem to find it on TH-cam but I watched an interview with special effects artists Tom Woodruff, Jr. and Alec Gillis who stated Stan Winston worked out there is only 11 mins of CGI in Jurassic park, Could you imagine a top budget movie today? Probably 80% is CGI if not all of it

@@evilsWa I think you've missed his point. Jurassic park was a tasty cake with 90% sponge and 10% wonderful new frosting on top. The 90% was the film and how it was made, acted, scripted and directed. The 10% was special effects that sat on top of that. Now, blockbuster movies give you 90% icing in CGI effects and 10% cake (actual movie and acting) and therefore any "special-ness" behind the special effects has gone. If you eat a cake that's 90% icing and 10% cake, you'll puke and that's the effect most movies have on me these days. He's right, you've missed the point that movies still need to be good as works of drama and you can't plug the gaps with more effects, so good night.
I had forgotten about Jurassic Park's use of the then new surround sound technology. Once you mentioned the newness of it, Mr. Harper, the memory of being amazed and shaken by the stereo feel of Jurassic Park flooded back in to me. I could hear a dinosaur moving around on the left side of the screen and sense it move over to the right with my eyes closed, and the T-Rex roar filled the theater, sending shivers up my spine.

I was 5 when it came out, and I remember mistaking the Brachiosaur in the first shot as an ELEPHANT!! And my whole family was like "OMG!! its a Dinosaur! Its a dinosaur!"
I remember renting it SO MANY TIMES, the Guy at the store refused to rent it to me!! Then I started making up stories ( oh my cousin from the country wants to see it. I've got guests who want to see it.).
I didn't get English much till I was 12-13, And till then I had probably seen it well over 100 times (I had started to keep a count when I was 9 and counted till 49 something till my tenth birthday).
And yes. I read the book much later around 2008 something And was BLOWN AWAY by all the extra action in it.
I still think, The BOOK version of the film can be made into a Mini series. I would LOVE to see that.

What a great retrospective review! As a 90s kid who never got to see or read the novel this thorough review made me get a sense of what made this film great, which is exactly what I was looking for after having just watched the movie a few days ago.
I feel at ease that I was not the only one that thought the movie was a bit weak in story and character development. I loved the critism at the end of the video and the images of all videogames, the amusement park, clothing items, TV shows that show the influence the movie had pop culture.
26 years ago!! My good! It seems a couple of years ago to me! Kept re-watching this movie and its two sequels so many times... Still so valid.
I took my young nephew to see this on its opening day. The cinema was full of youngsters from about 4 upwards with a lot of adults too. I think every one of us thought we were watching real dinosaurs. The look of wonder on the kids' faces and the gasps from the adults is something I have not witnessed before or since.
They can bring out as many Jurassic World films as they like, they will not beat the original for scale and spectacle.
The thing I love most about this film are all the memorable lines - all the way through! I've watched this movie so many times just for the dialogue -sooooo good!

Thank you so much for this retrospective Oliver. I've been looking forward to it since I saw your preview a few weeks ago and watching the full version took me right back to my childhood. I was nine at the time and I remember that summer with such vividness. Jurassic Park is a blockbuster that I hold with deep nostalgic love and seeing a lot of the things you mentioned here took me right back. I remember the warnings about the PG rating, I remember how clips on television didn't give away the dinosaurs and my jaw dropping when I went to see it on the big screen and how I was nearly deafened by the use of DTS sound when me and my family went to see it. We didn't even know what DTS sound was when we went to see it. In any event, thank you for this wonderful video. This and the movie Jurassic World (which I loved to bits) have taken me back to a very special, happy time in my life. Thank you.
Great retrospective Oliver. I agree so much with your 'this was my Star Wars' comment. Anyone born in the early to mid eighties would agree. I was 8 seeing this in 93 and it remains for me my greatest cinematic memory. It had real spectacle and awe to it carried off by the best film makers of the time. I'm glad that everything lined up to see it as a kid. A terrific experience.
This is an absolute Jurassic Classic. I love this film and its franchise. Great job
As an adult, I think one of JP's greatest strengths is also one of its greatest weaknesses. the pacing is nothing short of extraordinary, at least to me, considering the T. Rex doesn't show up till halfway through the movie and we don't even notice. But at the same time the movie is riddled with continuity big and small, most infamously the cliff as you noted. The characters are cartoons, but charming cartoons, and they prevent the dinosaur-less scenes (of which there are many) from becoming boring. It's a highly rewatchable movie as you said, and in fact I saw it twice in theaters when it was re-released back in 2013.
And of course, the special effects by ILM and Stan Winston's crew are revolutionary.

Oliver, I know you get this a lot, but your editing is top-notch, man. I love your videos and your commentary almost always brings a smile to my face. I only just found your channel recently, but I've been enjoying immensely the huge catalogue!
Aaah, immortal Tim. The boy who is immune to damage. That kid should have died four times in the entire film (including two in rapid succession). If I have one niggle with the entire film it's got to be Tim's unbelievable survival rate.
1: Not eaten by t-rex.
2: Not killed when the same t-rex pushed the car containing the children over the edge of the bridge and it fell a reasonable distance.
3: Sustaining a strong electric shock (allegedly a lethal dose) which then caused him to fall from the electric fence he was climbing.
4: Practically the entire kitchen scene really.

Omg you almost made me cry out of nostalgia ;w; Also I remember vividly the first time I watched this movie : I was like 6,already fan of dinosaurs and when I asked my dad to watch it,he was like "there's not too much killing in it right ?" and I was like "um...no ! :D" So yeah,great movie,great soundtrack,and great memories.
30:24 The T-Rex PROBABLY could move quietly without making too much noise. It'd just have to move slow. It's a hunter, after all. How do you think it hunted, Oliver?? Huh, do you think it just chased and chomped down on its its prey, Oliver?
Also, you can see a part of the wall missing near the twin doors of the Visitor's Center Entrance. That's how it got in. It stalked its prey (the velociraptors) because they were noisy and moving around.

I made the mistake of reading the book twice before seeing the movie on opening day. i loved the effects on the dinos but man, the book is soooooooooo much better.

Haha, yeah. The reverse for me. I saw the movie at about age 10, was smitten of course, and then immediately read Crichton's book, and The Lost World after I finished the first book. It was a slice of heaven, friends. I read the books so fast. I remember pulling all nighters - my parents tried to get me to go to sleep but I just told them, "yeah, almost done" and kept going. I remember the heat from my bed lamp burning my forehead as I leaned in close with the book - and I remember the words on the page disappearing from my conscious field of view and just seeing the "movie in the mind's eye" as it were for minute or hours at a time. God, what a thrill to be young then and feel that excitement and awe. Funny enough, just two weeks ago I decided to re-experience the novel via audiobook. I found that the exposition of the novel is by far the most satisfying, because that's what's most missing from the movie and it's where we get Crichton's critique on modern science and the atmosphere of corporate exploitation setting up the plot. Plus deeper plot and character backstories. Wonderful wonderful stuff. Cheers, all.
Video Game Fhiend You have to appreciate the difficulty of translating a book to a movie. In a sense sometimes a story is better written and read. Plus it has to appeal to all audiences, not just the genre in which it was created. I always think it’s a gift not to read a book before the movie if possible which it might not be, you never know when something will get adapted. I believe you should watch Mike Hills breakdown of Jurassic park and the complexity of what you’re really really seeing. Spielberg is a genius. Mike Hill breaks down Terminator 2 as well. I think this was a masterpiece. By comparing them you do the movie injustice. It’s a conscious decision to allow something to stand on its own merit :)

I was lucky enough to see JP in the cinema when I was 10. I was amazed and terrified at the same time. One of my favourite, if not my favourite, movies of all time.
Good old days. I remember watching this for the first time on VHS. I was huge dinosaur geek back then so it was like a dream come true.

Great as always Oliver. I was alive when the hype for this movie was in full swing. TV Spots, Toy Ads, The Video Games, it was just crazy. I bought the movie on DVD from a $5. bin at my local Walmart, and as of sometime ago last year, I bought the book from my "Waterfront Rescue Mission", so now I have both versions of Jurassic Park. I haven't watched this movie in a long time, I should again sometime.

When I was in 3rd grade, we played the Theme to Jurassic Park as a school band that year. JP was a big deal.
Jurassic Park original novel seems more interesting than ever
Well worth a read. It's even better than the film, which only really touches the surface of the characters and what is actually going on in the park. Huge portions of it just aren't in the film (for obvious pace/time reasons). Also, the characters are shuffled around a fair bit. Gennaro is a far more prominent character and isn't just a lawyer stereotype, Hammond is rather less warm and Walt Disney (he's in it for the money rather than 'spare no expense'). The kids are also different without really being noticeably so, which makes it silly that they were changed so much.
Malcolm is exactly the same though :)

Loved this review of JP, Oliver! I will however agree as to your points against the film, like the T-Rex paddock suddenly turning into a cliff, AND the T-Rex being able to sneak up on the humans and the Raptors without being heard! Must be a magic T-Rex!

I must have been about 6 years old when I saw this film (on home video) and it's left an impression with me ever since - and to this day is one of my favourite films of all time. Great content by the way, I'll definitely be watching more of these retrospectives
Thanks for another good retrospective. This film was (I think) the third film I saw at the cinema and I was mesmerised by its brilliance. The book is great too, Crichton was a super talented man!

I pretend to know about 80% of the movies you review by heart - and your channel is definitely state of the art in movie reviewing (scene selection, story lining, background information, reviewing actors/directors/cutter/composer performance)... the only thing that I find a bit overwhelming is the pace of the information you provide. I know you wanna provide as much information as possible in rather short time but it’s hard for viewers to even think about what you say for only a second. Still, really happy I found your channel!
Ps: unlike many other reviewers, you completely go without speaking full frontal into the camera, big thumbs up!

I can speak to the "not suitable for younger children" tag. I was 4 at the time, my parents not wanting to shill out for the babysitter took me and my 6 year old sister to watch Jurassic Park at the cinema. I even remember convincing them that I was old enough to see it. Enter the t-rex attack on the cars. I was screaming my head off, hiding behind the seats, and generally being terrified. Nothing would help, my mother took me out, only to return for the long necks sneezing on the people on the tree, and even that innocent scene had me in tears. I can't remember much other than that, I assume my mum sat out with me, but needless to say my parents won't let me live it down. Now I know it has that "not suitable for younger children" tag, I know they are to blame.
Excellent review Oliver, I love these 30 minute plus ones, they feel like proper mini-documenatries, keep it up mate. Now it's time to go and watch Jurassic World, I really hope it's at least decent.

I was only 13 years old when I first watched it, dubbed in hindi in my hometown in India. It is one of my favourite movie outings till date. I absolutely loved opening edit, very nicely done. Jurassic Park was my "Star Wars" too. I saw it as a 4 year old on TV (by accident). But this movie has always been my favorite action/adventure movie. I disagree about the "wonder and awe" that you claims wear thin. I feel like it still maintains it's danger and suspense throughout, because we're still aware of the character's commentaries on the action around them.

I was 6 years old when my parents took me to see this in theaters..... I about shit myself when I seen the T-Rex and heard that grumbling. Amazing movie even to this day it looks and feels great.

Really enjoyed this Oliver, probably in my top 3 films of all time. I remember going to watch it for my 11th birthday also in the summer of 93. The merchandise was very memorable, it was literally everywhere!
I watched it when it was back in the cinema the other year and it still looks fantastic! Going to watch Jurassic World very soon :-)
Hah, I was 10 in 1993. "This was my Star Wars," yeah, that was the same for me too. Jurassic Park was life. I read the books after having seen the film. Just finished re-reading Crichton's book by listening to the audio book, and was surprised how much about Crichton's book I forgot about. I was comparing to the movie the whole time while reading the book and I thoroughly enjoyed your comparison. This review is absolutely spot on. Thank you so much for making this. Liked and subbed.
