    Fun FYI: that outlet on the island is actually required by code! When we bought our house, it was something I asked for but the seller didn’t want to put in and our agent discovered it was actually required by code. Apparently fires caused by people knocking over small appliances by tripping over a cord running from an island were so common, it’s part of code to have a electrical outlet built in. Or atleast that’s what I was told.

    • @j0nnyh34t7
      @j0nnyh34t7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Every county in every state has different codes. So where you live it’s required but bob may not be required to have one.

    • @horatioswrld
      @horatioswrld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@j0nnyh34t7 aren’t some things nationwide standards?

    • @j10001
      @j10001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@horatioswrld Yes, but those standards would be adopted and modified at the state and local level. There’s a reason building permits and building inspections are done at the most-local geography (town, city, or county). They take into account the rules from all the levels.

    • @thesledgehammerblog
      @thesledgehammerblog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@j10001 Having learned a lot more than I ever planned to about building codes (a major latent defect in your house will do that), it seems that most jurisdictions will just use the NEC (National Electrical Code, developed and published by the National Fire Protection Association) straight up, although the version of the code (typically revised every three years) may vary as it may take several years for a new version of the code to be adopted after it is published. Some jurisdictions may also modify the code in places, or could even replace it with their own code entirely, but those things seem to be rare. Internationally, many countries have their own codes, and the EU has a standardized code as well that many member nations use.
      When it comes to plumbing it's a little more confusing as there are two major standards (International Plumbing Code and Universal Plumbing Code) but in the parts I've read it seems that the differences between them tend to be minor, and the majority of the requirements are identical. The tricky part is in figuring out which one is in effect where you are, which isn't always easy to find.
