    I'm an English man with Scottish heritage who has lived in Germany in the past and I miss Germany it is a wonderful country with lovely people who I respect so much. Highland cathedral composed by Germans Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb in 1982 for a Highland games held in Germany brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it.

    I am german and this tune was played on my husbands funeral in 2018. Scotland was and is the land of our hearts. We could not explain why, but who already knows about the ancient roots?

    Hello folks, I am a scotsman. I know this tune was not written by a scot, but it was written as a pipe harmony, whitch I hope you will all appreciate is our national instrument. I watched a documentery the other day on how the pipes inspired britain in the trenches of the world wars. In my eyes and many others it is not only beautiful, but a very inspiring sound..If you ever want to succeed at anything, try the pipes in the backround. I promise you won't go wrong. Much love to the world, we hate being in a war that we had no say in. we are a peacefull nation.

      Michael Korb has always had a special liking for bagpipe music. When he finished school in 1974 and came to Berlin, he immediately took lessons with the "pipe major" of a Scottish battalion, who taught him to play this unusual instrument. When the Scots left Berlin, Michael Korb also went
      .... to Edinburgh, where he took daily lessons with the 80-year-old master Paddy Atkinson. During the day, he practised in Paddy's garden arbour, at night (because of the neighbours) he practised in the woods. For several years, he kept coming back to Edinburgh, until he had an adequate command of the instrument.
      Following publication of a record featuring bagpipe music in disco style in 1979 and the lucky encounter with the experienced and very successful arranger, producer and composer Uli Roever (who worked, among others, for Udo Jürgens and Peter Maffay), after the production of the single records "Highland Games"/"Lonely Piper" and "Dreamy Island"/"Devils Dance" "Highland Cathedral" was jointly developed and also published as a single in 1982 together with the title "By The Right-Quick-March". The two makers of the tune were convinced of its chances of success - the publishing companies were not. In spite of their rejection at that time, the tune has found its way into people's hearts - sometimes in an unusual way.

    It doesn't matter who wrote it - it's a glorious tune. If anyone else, from any country in the world, would like to write anything as comparable, please do, bring it to Scotland, and we'll play it - that's because we are an inclusive country - we celebrate humanity - "a man's a man for aw that."

    • @DavidMiller-ps5rr
      @DavidMiller-ps5rr 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree. It's magnificent, though I'm utterly taken aback that a Scotsman didn't write it. I have this on my MP3 player and always replay it at least a couple of times when it comes around. As for 'the pipes' I love the sound they make.

    Many excellent teachers of the Highland pipes are very open to teaching people of all nationalities, races, faiths who are serious and diligent students. I have heard some of my compositions played by Grade One bands at the World Pipe Band Competitions in Glasgow. I am from Israel and was always made to feel welcome by pipers in Scotland and Canada especially. Honestly, the fact that Germans composed this melody has never been an issue in any way. Green Hills of Tyrol was composed by Rossini, and is probably the most common retreat 3/4 for pipe bands.

I ran across Highland Cathedral some time ago and it is a special song indeed. As for "God Save the Queen" That melody has been around for some time. It was also the Melody for the German National Anthem until WWI. Here in the states, we appropriated it for a song called "My Country Tis of Thee". I just saw this in a Video which was a Tribute to the men & Women of the NHS. Very touching.

      +Patrick Hofkens The main things I think went against it were ... fear; a belief that our only asset was North Sea oil and the lack of a strong, believable currency. I think the mood has already progressed beyond fear to irritation (with Westminster) and is now approaching outrage at being treated as a backwater with no clout. More and more people are now realising that the wrong decision was made last year. I also think people are now seeing NS oil in its context - wont last forever but goes a lot further amongst the 5M population of Scotland than 68M ofUK - AND it is just a fantastic bonus, not the basis of our economy. Currency needs to be settled, though, before the next referendum. A lot of YES! people were against sharing £ sterling as much as No people were made to believe it wouldnt be allowed by Westminster - which was nonsense anyway. So we need a credible, strong alternative that people will have confidence in.
      I know the older generation may have made the difference, but I have to praise my 94 year old father who voted Yes because he believed it was not about him at his age but about the younger generation and the generations to come. He was a belter - miss you, Dad xx

    I am proud to say I have Irish Ancestry. One can say it's close to Scotland. But i have a Scottish Lass as a DIL. She played Highland Cathedral at both my daughters weddings

    In my humble (English, and therefore possibly worthless) opinion, this tune is why God invented bagpipes. (I did used to wonder why before hearing it). It epitomises all that is fab about Scotland; Highlands and Glens (oh, and the humour of course)😊 I can honestly say it moves me to motionless. I just have to sit there, listen, appreciate and pay attention. Recommend Andre Riu’s version too.

    Maybe we needed a German to write us a song that captures our country and our love for it, not a sour dirge about a battle 700 years ago. This song makes me feel more patriotic than FoS and Scotland the Brave combined!
