This was really great! I have an interview today and this has really helped me imagine what I’ll be doing, which I think will help me better explain how my skills line up with the role.
@@4vocadoseries nope. But not because of anything I did. The interviewer told me he thought the interview went great but he was concerned that I wasn’t proficient in WordPress. While I was willing to learn, I hate WordPress and didn’t know that would be a dealbreaker for a project management role so… bullet dodged I guess. Lol
Dont be fooled - her calendar looked pretty chill, probably early phase of a project. I would say at least 40% of the work time is communicating or moderating. Another 30% Planning/Preparing stuff, another 10% documentation/reporting. Whats left is improvements or knowledge transfer or small side projects. At least thats how it is for me. Oh, and managing one project at a time seems extra chill. For me a lot of the stress (not necessarily negative) comes from having to "jump" between different projects and switching between the different "worlds" of each project.
@@janeymers7154 what industry are you in? Because when I was a regional brand manager (not in the US), my day would be about 5 times more loaded than this. I was actually looking for an IT project manager day, I wanted to see how people deal with all the Scrum features.
This is very informative! Other day in life videos focus a lot on useless things like "I do 20 minutes yooga.. then I go to Starbucks...my commute..." and in the end you don't learn anything about the actual job. Well done Indeed :)
You have to study university in your country for being a project manager??? Its a joke??? This job can do everybody who can communicating with another person!! this is not science!!!!!!!!
Just be cautious - this probably is more representative of a junior PM position in a product development environment. If your field is engineering or software it'll be quite different, particularly if it involves client commercial T&C's such as via NEC4. Your time will absolutely be soaked up by configuration management (CE's, EWN's, TRA's, Risk reduction, and ofcourse baseline & earned value - EVM). Before you then get into indemnities & other ADE's (assumptions, dependencies, exclusions). Good luck - it's a fun career!
You should have gotten experience as a project manager before pursuing a masters. You could’ve made well over 90k-110k as a entry level and got certifications along the way for higher pay. If needed your company could’ve also paid to further your education😢
@@ilovecardboard1009 Hi! Is a master degree in engineering degree (civil/construction) is enough to be a project manager ? I studied and worked a bit abroad. Thank you.
@@ilovecardboard1009 oh no I haven't started my masters degree yet. I'm finishing up my bachelor's and am getting some experience with my current job to help me along the way.
Tweak is a banned word in Project Management btw. It's CHANGE. Once you use this language your scope control will become so much better. Also, for any prospective PM's - a lot of the job will become commercial contracts management through CEMAR or other such NEC4 tools to track EWN's, CE's, prolongations/ deferrals & risk reductions. This role is quite reminiscant of a project admin role or junior PM (assistant PM) if you're job hunting. Full PM roles will also have legal responsibilities, particularly under CDM regs if your in construction.
amazing thank you for that. could u also quickly explain all the acronyms like CEMAR NEC4 EWN CE, and the terms prolongations/deferrals and risk reductions?

Great video. Good to see what the day to day life is like for different roles. I've definitely noticed the difference when our team works with a good vs bad project manager.
This looks an interesting job but absolutely nothing like Project Management. Where is the project schedule, budget management, cost and earned value management, risk management, schedule risk analysis, scope and change management. NO offence but I think this paints a very inaccurate picture of what a real project manager does.
@@bolu101 My point is that there was literally none of it. Not one of the tasks she identified was actually a core project management fundamental. As I said, her job looks interesting, but she is not a Project Manager, irrespective of what role title her company has given her.
@@baronvonaux8294 she already stated that that she handles the whole project cycle in the beginning of the video, do you expect the Episode to be from the starting point of the project to the end?? She’s showed you an in going project, and how she’s following up with designing team and finance team. Some of you are too stupidd
@@z7z766 Yeah ok I am stupid. No I don’t expect to see the whole project lifecycle, but I do think it’s reasonable to expect to see a Project Manager do at least some project management in an episode intended to outline a day in the life of a project manager. As per my original comment, it looks like an interesting job but she is not a project manager. I’m sorry if this is too difficult for you to understand.
Fair comment; I work in construction and the points that you raised made sense with respect to my industry. I suppose the same would be true across most industries as it’s an active process from inception to completion. Perhaps her industry doesn’t require that level of detail. If anything, her job is more of information management and control.
My perception is that , Project Manager job is become equivalent to Office Manager Job. You use software ,meeting, but in reality you don't know anything of project . In fact many University say "you don't need to know or to be an expert about everything of project, because you have just coordinate the project". Basically the role is administrative, an office Manager because in reality you don't know how is real made risk assestment, Quality Management, Operation Management ect. It is total different instead if you did BSc engineer and the MSc Project Manager. Now people study BSc sociology then MSc Project Manager .
I’d say you’re “kind of” correct. You’re right that a project manager doesn’t need to know much about the project and you’re running meetings, following up on tasks, filling out documentation, creating documentation, possibly setting the scope, budget etc. but here’s the thing. Ceos, upper level management ext don’t have time for all of that stuff. So that’s why project managers are needed. To run the project from start to finish.
"update jira update jira" "have you updated the ticket have you updated the ticket" "close all the tickets close all the tickets" there may job is done
Love this. Hardcore engineer here doing the complete build-up of sophisticated computing platforms for automotive, those tiny things that keep your engine running. The best part of my work is to look amazed on a daily basis at how some of the most technology clueless individuals, that understand nothingggg, the most ignoranttt idioootsss around, become project managers, and we have to submit to their power points, to their stupid scheduling which means nothing, to their fairy targets and also help them compile on a ppt their own sh1t so thst they can go in front of their boss and show up how great they are doing. To all individuals I do enc9unter on my career PM are the worthless sh1t i just cant stand up
This is what every military officer does in some capacity. Legit all of them did this on an unimaginably complex scale at some point in their careers. Once you're "the dude" you track and coordinate everything beginning to end. And here is the thing, lives are on the line. It isn't like you can buy your way or sue your way out of a setback. People die. Planning Conferences Resourcing and Coordinating Decision Points Interim Progress Reports After Action Reviews Honestly, even junior officers can excel at this. We never called it project management though. It is just what we were expected to do as a part of the job.
No pun intended but here is a take of someone who is working with project managers in tech for about 20 years: *A day in the life of a project manager:* typing emails, moving squares on drag and drop boards (KANBAN and co.) from one column to the other, a ton of meetings (most unnecessary), unreal expectations that are based on lack of knowledge, taking a screenshot of a complicated application, moving stuff around in MS paint, then asking the engineering team to do it "quickly" because a PM think that the real work will be as easy as it was to photoshop a screenshot, excess time spent on useless presentations that don't even make sense and will have to be re-done by the head of engineering before the requirements even reach actual development stage, flooding teams with a ton of tasks which do not make sense - then asking questions to understand why it is impossible to do in the way it was written, then the Senior dev who works for the company for only 7 month finding out the PM who works for the company for 3 years have no idea what the company is actually doing etc etc.. I hope no PM will take me too personally, I am sure there are a few of them that actually do actual work..
Sounds like tech made you bitter then, maybe time to go work with project managers in construction, healthcare, and other fields who also have to manage stakeholders and travel as well.
@@ac75911 ahh I am not young anymore - wish I could fullfill my dream of starting my own landscaping company 🙂now seriously...actually tech did not make me bitter at all. I manage the entire tech for a mid-sized company, about 5 teams under me, including a team of PMs. as I mentioned before, I do talk from experience. once again, please don't take it personally, I am just a very direct person. never said all PMs are a waste of resources, but in many cases they cause more issues than good.
I liked this video very much; I wish to have more from this kind of video about each job in life as a series; this will help plenty of people to be close to the job itself, especially when shifting careers.
Wow, I hear that being a project manager is stressful, having to deal with scheduling, accounting, dealing with stockholders, etc. She makes it seems easy.
There are many levels of PM's. A PM at a marketing company doesn't have anything like the responsibility and complexity of a PM in construction putting buildings up safely.
@@stevowyeth Exactly, I can speak from experience. Something a lot of the commentors on here fail to realize is the huge variety of industries PM's work in. Maybe some tech sectors have it easier and never have to travel. Love how it's assumed AI will also replace the job entirely, likely not.

It appears your doing project management for a marketing firm. That's what Im most interested in. From 1997 to 2015 I managed all projects for 3 small businesses without computer software. One of my crews was remanufacturing multiple transmission simultaneously. I wrote and perfected all standard operating procedures to eliminate mistakes and injuries. This crew became the largest and most accurate producers in our area within the first year 1997. We produced several hundred units per year and in addition completed thousands of smaller repair projects. This came in handy when I decide to fix & flip houses years later. Meanwhile I also handled all marketing projects for the company. Compared to physical product projects with the danger of injury and loss of expensive parts and supplies etc. The marketing projects were always way less stress and even fun by comparison. There is also more opportunity for creativity in marketing. Thank you for making this video. It looks like a Reel about the Real. ;-)
I am trying to get into Project Management. I have my Scrum Master Certification and I am taking the Google Project Management Certification Course and preparing for the CAPM. Any advice?
If you don't have any past relevant project management experience... whichever certification you do, it's real hard to get the position of project manager, instead you should focus on positions like project coordinator, junior project manager, project assistant etc.. If you have done any graduation projects frame it in an effective model in your resume ..might help. Thank you for reading , a fellow aspirant on PM
Experience & very good communication skills. Apart from aiming for PMP as a goal, try taking up professional communication certificates. That helped me in getting into my first PM role.

Thanks for sharing! I got my PMP a few months ago. Haven't moved into a PM role, but, it has helped me in my current role for sure!
I would like to see a video of a day in life of a Business Analyst
I have been strongly thinking about studying for the PMI CAPM exam. I think this video makes me want to break into project management even more.
Well done Gillian! Thanks for sharing with us your daily work. Much appreciated. Best wishes!
Thank you for the feedback! 😀
@Indeed you are very welcome!
I will finish my project management degree this May of 2023. This was some beneficial insight. Thank you!
I hope you do super well in your future!
I feel it was watching college kids doing a school project! the YAY at the end of the meeting was it for me.
I loved this video as I am looking to pivot into PM. I had no idea you could work in broad way as a PM... sounds like such a fun job! Soooo is your company hiring for PM entry level roles? lol
Thanks for watching! Check out all the open roles at indeed here: www.indeed.jobs/?from=indeed_yt
Wow! I live in Seattle and saw that billboard almost every day for the past couple months.
My current job title is Account Executive/Client Relations, but after watching this video, I am convinced my day-to-day job is actually more similar to a Project Manager than simply an Account Executive
Finally a REAL Day in Life!!! Keep it coming please!

This was really great! I have an interview today and this has really helped me imagine what I’ll be doing, which I think will help me better explain how my skills line up with the role.
Did you get the job ? lol
Lol
@@ShaunteDaurice As a PM, can't imagine why you would need to know WordPress...
I was thinking the same thing.
I hope you find an even better job!!!
Looks so simple and not stressful at all.
I'm studying towards the PMI-PMP now, goal is to take it in the next month!
Good luck man I got mine late last year!
I got mine last month! You got this!
Good luck! You've got this 💪
@@lailagillani from where are you originally?
@@bluehawkbee from where you prepared for this exam?
The amount of coffee used in 0:18 for just one cup would give me a 180bpm heart rate even at night.
I'm in a different industry, but that was an interesting view of how my PM work compares to this
that's why we love project management! there are so many options on the industries you can work in.
She is grinding and seems to be enjoying it! This is great
This is very informative! Other day in life videos focus a lot on useless things like "I do 20 minutes yooga.. then I go to Starbucks...my commute..." and in the end you don't learn anything about the actual job. Well done Indeed :)
This is so awesome! Absolutely loved working with you and great to see your face :)
I'm getting my Masters degree in project management. Thank you so much for letting me see a piece of what it actually means to be a project manager.
I was about to say the same thing,
Thanks and Shout out from Jamaica 🇯🇲 🙌🏼.

I haven't had any fun lately, You bring me joy!I love the kind and generous heartwarming atmosphere that you create, your kind, easygoing, warm vibe. I like the essence how you live on. I need to be true to myself and find a job I am passionate about. I want to find a way to live as who I really am.
Had to circle back around to this video and say this plus some words of advice from other PMs sparked the interest. Got my foot in the door as a Media Project Manager! Very lucrative and I enjoy it.
Inspiring and motivational! This was also an informative and well explained video! Definitely will be looking into project management courses or what schools offer Project Management majors. Would love to know more about hybrid jobs after seeing this! Great work INDEED!

This looks an interesting job but absolutely nothing like Project Management. Where is the project schedule, budget management, cost and earned value management, risk management, schedule risk analysis, scope and change management. NO offence but I think this paints a very inaccurate picture of what a real project manager does.
This is the most factual video I’ve seen. You don’t expect to have all that in one video
You see her calendar. Likely filled with meetings. That sounds about right for a PM lol
I don't know who you are but I already love you.
I used to work as a PM in Indeed! No longer work there the contractor sucked. But indeed was great.
I want to switch my career path. This video is really helpful!
Same!
Very well put. I am the Owner of two IT companies and can confirm all that you are saying. 👍🏻

People die.

Honestly, even junior officers can excel at this. We never called it project management though. It is just what we were expected to do as a part of the job.
No pun intended but here is a take of someone who is working with project managers in tech for about 20 years:
*A day in the life of a project manager:* typing emails, moving squares on drag and drop boards (KANBAN and co.) from one column to the other, a ton of meetings (most unnecessary), unreal expectations that are based on lack of knowledge, taking a screenshot of a complicated application, moving stuff around in MS paint, then asking the engineering team to do it "quickly" because a PM think that the real work will be as easy as it was to photoshop a screenshot, excess time spent on useless presentations that don't even make sense and will have to be re-done by the head of engineering before the requirements even reach actual development stage, flooding teams with a ton of tasks which do not make sense - then asking questions to understand why it is impossible to do in the way it was written, then the Senior dev who works for the company for only 7 month finding out the PM who works for the company for 3 years have no idea what the company is actually doing etc etc..
@@stevowyeth for sure

Once the project management software learns how to read emails and auto update the statuses - that takes away 50% of her job?
I'm not so sure why the word "project manager" holds so much weight. They're just senior coordinators. I guess, "manager" makes the term more impactful? And yeah. Her job is cushy, even for a PM job.
