  • Body working is the foundation for the best paint job but in order to have a good base to body work mocking up test fitting all the panels is essential, plus how to fix the issues.

    I like the door tweak tip! Where 2 panels bolt together like the valance to fender, sometimes if you over break the flanges, when tightening the bolts, it will pull that gat tight. What you did works well too. Thanks for the tips Jon.

    Love the sanding block as a fulcrum for the door twist, definitely gonna use that. Thanks as always for adding to our knowledge with your tips and tricks.

      You bet! I have used that and a chunk of 2x4 works good too.

    And there you go! Easy as pie. Another simple, to-the-point vid! Funny, even on the original, undamaged lower valances, the plastic park lamp fillers are a bear to work out. Guess it's due to the twisty nature of the lower valance.

      The lower valance if not bolted into place is very flimsy, I accidentally bent one in the middle while moving it in the garage. All the more reasons to test fit them

    If more people would learn when they go to car shows or even buy a classic they have no ideal the panels were bodo-filled to make the gaps look good well when there's an inch of filler on the door edge that means stay away from the car it wasn't done right! Thanks for showing the correct way to line up gaps a bit of filler is ok but it's not meant to use to make gaps an inch thick.

    • @VinylVillageGarage
      @VinylVillageGarage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly filler has its place and part of a restoration for sure. The worst part is seeing a car that doesn’t get any gap work with the metal or body filler. It’s so important to mock things up and worth the time.

    Always amazed by your craftsmanship. You’ve probably been asked this many times but I’ll ask again. If you were to build this car for sale what would you charge!

    • @VinylVillageGarage
      @VinylVillageGarage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. Depends on if I have to find the car as well or just do the work. If you figure $50 an hours @ 800 hours plus parts 25-30k then other stuff like paint, sand paper, welding supplies and so on $80,000 range plus a car which could be 5-15k. Keep in mind that $50 is lower than most shops average too. That is why when someone says $100,000 for a rebuild is kinda about the norm.
      Now there is cheaper options like just clean it up and knock the rough off and getting it mechanically sound and a shinny paint job on the outside and not do a nut bolt overhaul. You might be to cut that coat in half.

    Unless your daughter has been painting your nails (no judgement)...that whack on the thumb must've really squeezed some orange dew out of you.
    Great outline of some quick tricks. Can't wait to see this one hit the prime and block stage.

    Nice work. My hood scoops for like crap too. They are pot metal not the fiberglass so not sure how I can make them fit better.

    • @VinylVillageGarage
      @VinylVillageGarage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Good question. Pot metal could be filed to fit but it might end need to split the difference with body filler on the hood and inserts then sand smooth. As much as I have played with these birds I have only messed with one factory 400 hood and it still had the factory inserts that fit well. I can only image the replacement ones are less then ideal hood and inserts

    Using a little piece of plate steel, instead of the spreader, would have prevented that dent.
