    I had three door handles to fit and I was initially unsure how best to go about drilling straight holes for the through bolts.
    This video was the most useful and clearest explanation I could find. I used a length of 3cm thick hardwood for a homemade jig hoping it would help to keep the pilot holes lined up when drilled from both sides of the door. I used a clamp to make sure it didn't move. When I consider how it might have gone wrong, I was able to do a reasonably good job of it. Thanks.

    That's a great tip, thank you. I've struggled with drilling accurate holes for these handles in the past, and have also seen so many customers where the long screws have been left of then the small trim screws fail and ruin the door. I have 11 doors to do in a house soon so. 👍🏻

    Great video. Some electricians linesman’s pliers have integrated bolt cutters for shortening machine screws. We use them when fitting pattress boxes/ light switches/plug switches. The screw screws in and is cut with the action of the plier, you then screw the screw out which maintains the screw thread. This would save you so much time with guess work and filing down post cut. Thanks for a great video, I’ve got some door handles to fit and your channel has been so useful.

    @TrueBrit1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like your simple, easy to understand videos, and your non-condescending attitude to us viewers. I have a question though - when it comes to fitting the handles, couldn't you just attach the handles to the spindles, then attach them to the door by the three screws, THEN mark and drill the two bolt-through holes (from one side if one is careful not to break out the other side), remove the 3 screws and then fit the two bolts, then screw the three screws back to finish up the handle? Or am I being dumb? I am a DIY'er with a little experience, and I have 8 of these exact doors to fit, with corresponding bolt-through handles almost identical to the ones you fitted, so am somewhat apprehensive. Also, what size auger would you suggest for the spindle and and mechnism, and could I use a spade bit instead of an auger bit? Oh yeah, I've subscribed! Cheers.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there🖐You could mark the holes for the through bolt's as you describe, but I'd definitely drill in from each side as the bolt holes are VERY close to the edge of the back plate rose. Check outmy video on fitting these latches, and the drill sizes are in the comments section👍Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del

    • @TrueBrit1
      @TrueBrit1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thetallcarpenter Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I get what you're saying, and can understand the risk of drilling through and having the holes on the other side come through outside of the rose. I think therefore a jig, like you have made, will be the best method, as then drilling through both sides should ensure the holes are in alignment. I hope.

    There's a way without having to feel around with the screw. With the handle off and the spindle in one handle, put the long screws in the door handle holes and thread both the metal rods on about 3 or 4 turns. Now you can just push that handle and the 2 rods all the way through to the other side, with enough to make the ends of the rods poke out the 2 holes on the other side. At least on my door the rods could poke out, they taper slightly thinner at the ends. This way there isn't any feeling around for the hole inside the door - the rod is there poking out - you can just put the short screws in the other handle and be able to see the ends get screwed in.

    Hi Del. Right video this time. So use a jig to get through bolts. But then you get this sort of nonsense. You have done the holes square, put the handle level(square to the door) but now the bloody holes in the handle are not in the square position, they are cocked over a d you have a right job to get the handle right.

    5:30 be nice to see this assemble off the door.
    I’ve watched both videos - great, no BS. But my handle pack has no instructions and seems just like yours. I’ve no idea why the full through screws & “female” part are at 9 & 3, opposed to 12 & 6 positions.
    My handle set “intelligent hardware” has a grooves hole through the barrel like yours, but the female part is too fat to fit through it. Crazy. Seems like I’ll have to junior hacksaw all the female recipient parts down - seems daft and fiddly.

      Hi there🖐Yes, what you've got does sound a bit odd, but it has been my experience that can happen and you just have to 'make it work' the best you can🤞Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del

    Just mark all three holes at once. This looks like a longer way of doing it.

      Hi there🖐Where would you position the jig to mark all 3 holes at the same time🤔Cheers Del

      @@thetallcarpenter I normally mark the 3 points on a line on both sides and then drill pilots right through then increase to the desired diameter.

      @@thetallcarpenter I always drill the barrel hole and mark the 3 points and drill.
