I think the only thing that would change if TLOU2 wasn’t leaked would be the sales. The average fan would still hate the story, but more of them would be $70 poorer.

Pretty much. A lot of people were just being reactionary about Joel but there’s so many failings in the story it still would not be a good experience
@@riastradh the story was made in a way to purposely piss you off, if I remember right, other people kept niel in check and told him his ideas were shit for the first game, but by the second the people keeping him in check were gone. it takes a hell of a failure for me to outright blacklist a company from ever getting money from me again in games, naughty dog earned that spot.
TLOU2 leaks saved a lot of people their money. Everyone would have still hated the story, but the wound would have been deeper cause of the money people spent just to find out the trailers were a blatant bait and switch
I don't think there is anything wrong with the bait and switch, it's there for the sake of the twist. It's not a bad thing at all it's just the fans were so into the story they wanted. That they were bound to dislike the way the developers wanted to push the story. Neither party is at fault here, it's fine to not like the stories, and it sucks for the developers that the story they wanted to make didn't appeal to their fans.
@@kobaltreaver Ummm, there is something wrong with a bait and switch, if you use it in your marketing, cause you're then trying to sell your game, based on misleading if not false information.
You can cut out characters, end cutscenes before they show off something happening or cut two scenes together, to change the chain of events. So long as everything is still part of the actual game, then it's ok, but ND made up new scenes, to sell the idea, that Joel was still alive.

I will say that even had the Last of Us 2 leaks not happened, the backlash would have still be severe over Joel's death. Reason is the early trailers, before the leak even happened, were an outright bait and switch, showing Joel in a particular scene that, once the game was out, occurred further into the game and a completely different character in the place Joel was shown in the trailer. Hiding details is one thing, but outright lying is another.
The difference without the leaks is the sales would have been initially higher, as people would have bought the game completely blind only to be pissed off then after the money had already changed hands. Not that the sales weren't high initially anyway, but one thing Act Man (and most other outlets that covered the story) failed to cover is the sheer number of returns for physical copies of the game, not to mention that the Australian government got involved when Sony was denying refunds for digital copies of the game and basically forced them to do it. Last of Us 2 is one of if not the most refunded games of all time, which so few outlets actually cover, even though there's plenty of photographs online of entire walls of shelves and massive towers in bargain bins of pre-owned copies of the game.
Whenever the death of a previous mc happens in the sequel, you better do it well. I can completely understand why ppl would be pissed. I hated Tron Legacy for literally not featuring Tron at all and then killing him offscreen. But apparently ppl didn’t care. But I Imagine them doing it to a character many ppl really liked would have been terrible.
@@ma.2089 I mean what's a good way to do it though? Isn't it up to the developers to decide how they want to do it? Just cause fans react poorly to how somethings done in a story doesn't really matter imo. Yeah as a fan it would suck with it not going the way you want. I've had this experience plenty in media. But they certainly didn't deserve the backlash they got for it. After all it was the story the developers wanted. That's like saying fromsoft is in the wrong for making their games hard.
In the end the karma was served. It was basically false advertisement to their fans. It was a product filled with activist messaging they knew people wouldn't like so they lied to their customers with a premium price. If they were honest, this kerfuffle wouldn't be a permanent stain on Naughty Dog. I am thankful to the leaker for saving me the disappointment abd 80$, and sorry for the officeworkers at Naughty Dog. Maybe they need to fire the people practicing the foul work ethics that caused this.
@@ma.2089 a TH-camr called Nakey Jackey, made the case that, if you kill off a great character, you gotta have another equally great, if not greater character, that can make themselves distinct quicker than the original game.
@@kobaltreaver For starters, you don't make him the villain of the story. It gave a black and white view that he was awful for saving Ellie, when he was doing what EVERYONE wanted to do. Don't give me some god damned sob story that the doctor was actually a great guy that saved animals, and so on.
Second, be true to the character. Joel would never have just given strangers his name, and Tommy was about as distrusting. Writers say that Joel had gotten compacent, but that wasn't evident in the flashback where he told Ellie to never go into the mist without her mask.
Third, heroic self sacrifice, that's how you kill off a beloved character. Joel holding back a zombie hoard at a climatic moment in the story would have been a better death than just being beaten to death with a golf club.
This story was abysmal, and I firmly believe that whoever leaked it did so because he hated how Last of Us 2 treated the original protatonists. Naughty Dog deserved EVERYTHING they suffered for writing that crap, and I hope the backlash is even worse when they do it again for season 2 of the show.
TLOU2 leak was a community service. It was a GOOD thing since it saved so many people their hard earned cash. Naughty Dog was intent on spitting in their communities faces and that leak let a lot of them get out of the way. It was a well needed punch in the face for the Last of Us 2 story team and Neil Druckmann specifically.
Man, Neil Cuckmann is a pos. These people always talking about inclusivity and diversity yet chased off a female developer.
The only thing that I don't like in our current Game and Movie industry a.k.a. Entertaiment was they blame players/audiences for their failure.
Also these leaks are always came from the same people who are working with these Industry.
Blaming your player base, for a game not succeeding is pretty freaking dumb, no matter what reason you give really.
True it's not one's fault really. The developers made the game and story the way they wanted to, it's not their fault or the players fault for the players not liking the story that was told.

Somehow, I feel that the backlash against Naughty Dawg would have been more severe if the leaks were never released.
Only point he didn't get into about The Last of Us 2, was how Naughty Dog tried to damage control and "disprove" the leaks with their trailers.
Only, they did it by altering a Flashback Cutscene with Joel and Ellie, so it looked like it took place in the Game's current day setting, so it looked like Joel was still alive and fighting with Ellie. They also had Joel's VA, record another characters voice line, made a mocap that fit that line and cut that into another trailer, so it looked like Joel was responding to something Ellie said, when it was actually another character, Jessy I think.
Leaks suck, but it doesn't make it ok to do anything like that, just to try and disprove the leaks and sell the idea that Joel lived.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't done in response to the leak it was probably just planned to throw people off when the twist happened. You just seem like you're intentionally trying to put the worst possible swing on things. Due to not liking the direction they took their game.

And no, I don't really care about the game, if any other company pulled such a stunt, I'd be just as up in arms, cause I don't subscribe to the idea, that misleading marketing should be defended.
Try and look up the official Story Trailer and the Release Date Trailer and see if they didn't make it seem, that Joel was alive at different points of the game, when he clearly wasn't in the actual game.
Like the game, hate the game, whatever you feel or how I interpret it, it isn't that big a take to say "Hey, maybe you shouldn't include altered or fake content, as part of your marketing.".

I heard that insomniac had a hacker leak a multiplayer Spider-Man game like hop on a server and web swing with thousands of other spider fans…when that got found out insomniac instantly ripped that out of production
TLOU2 leak honestly was probably for the best. It saved a lot of people a good chunk of money rather than paying to see the character they liked get

To this day I still thank the hero who leaked tlou2 revealing all the false advertising they did with the game and saving me the time and money. I got to play it for free later on and it was as bad as everyone said.
In regards to the Last of Us (SPOILERS for it, of course), I managed to avoid all the leaked material but the biggest story moment that was leaked didn't really effect me, because that 1st trailer of the game where Ellie is playing the guitar... I basically assumed at the time that Joel was just a voice in her head. I'm glad the game didn't go down this more psychological route of its presentation... but my being right straight off certainly softened the blow.

I had insider info for a game once (literal game design documents like sketches, map designs, cinematic storyboards, stuff like that, in my hands) over a year before it was announced, and I probably could've farmed one correct "leak" for attention to make up that I was a "credible leaker", but I didn't think it was worth doing.
The game was Dead Rising 4. The company I work with did some work with Capcom and I kinda came across the stuff by coincidence.
You could've leaked them to let us know in advance how much of a shitshow Dead Rising 4 was gonna be lol.
5:23 Halo 3 leaked early the same way, same kids too iirc. Long story short, Microsoft threw out a bunch of broken internal XDKs (special Xbox Development Kits with internal access to Microsoft's servers) without wiping or de-validating their RSA keys, a bunch of hyper-nerd teenagers found them, started repairing them and using them to dump Halo 3 and GoW off of MS DevNet way early. 30-50 special internal XDKs made it into the wild, and ~20 are still unaccounted for to this day (though, DevNet has long since been shut down).
Both Genshin and Honkai Star Rail are routinely leaked every patch. A large part of that is that they have closed beta testing one patch in advance. I see it as both good and bad. Some people want to know up coming character's kit details as that would inform their gacha pulls. The downside is when story also gets leaked early. The other downside is that spoilers become hard to avoid due to social media and YT recommendations. Sometimes even just a video thumbnail and title will spoil things.

I agree with a lot of what Alana has said and the Act man leaks only hurt the games in most case it a detriment in may way's. If movies or games are leaked that i like it really is upsetting to me and i don't think it should ever happen. I am grateful for the video it was very informative. 👍

TBf I don't see problems with gameplay leaks they're actually nice and make sure the publishers and their marketing teams aren't just showing us the prettiest polished parts of a dog turd I also don't really mind basic info leaks but yeah dropping a bunch of actual story beats or company information kinda seems shady at the same time screw huge conglomerate gaming companies and I'm preying the video games crash comes soon so we can go back to having good games in 5 to 10 years like the last one when corporate greed flooded the markets and they buried millions of copies of et in the desert

I grew up in the 95% fake leak era. Now, its 20% or less fake and most of them real one are on Twitter. And most the fake ones are on Reddit, and they're STILL 50-75% real. Do you know how boring leaks are now? Hell the best fake area on the internet got nerfed yesterday because the reddit mods got tired of all the fake, but funny, leaks. Oh, we're still way above 99% of leaks being fake. People just tend to believe educated guesses as leaks. There's thousands of "leaks" every day, they're all BS.
Ok those game leaks were mostly bad for the companies involved, but it is not like they have leaked national security sensitve information like they have in War Thunder just to prove a point. Gaijin always said we dont balance our vehicles on real data and we wont use real data for it even if we can access it.

Leaks only kill hype. if the games are good they will still sell. I've had plenty of movies spoiled for me and it just makes me wanna watch it more because it was an interesting end. GTA will still sell millions.

A leak is just like if a piece of media you really enjoy be it a game, movie, book, or show getting spoiled. Would you be happy about getting the knowledge ahead of time? Would you want to know how they end when you're only halfway through? Of course not.

Maybe not for you, but it’s considered a detractor for other people. And if you heard something bad from the leak, be it out of context or real, would you be willing to buy it and see if it plays out fine? Many will not. Creators want to see ppl enjoy their works within context, not outside of the context.
