Why are *Rubies* the premium microtransaction currency in a *Mario* game!?
Why not Power Stars, Star Coins, Dragon Coins, Peach Coins, Blue Coins, Red Coins, Purple Coins, Shine Sprites, Gold Bars, Red Stars, Banana Coins or Golden Bananas from the DK side of things, Diamonds since they're at least the most common premium microtransaction currency in fee-to-pay Nintendo mobile games, or literally anything else that would make more sense in a Mario game than something that was only ever a currency in a Nintendo franchise product in two Zelda CD-i games made not by Nintendo, but by the company that would go on to create I. M. Meen!?

The worst part is there is a red crystal currency called Rupees in SPM. The barest minimum they could’ve gone for with a tiny tweak to the model. And they went for generic P2P crystal currency.

And as for "generic currency", Nintendo has already pretty firmly settled on Diamonds in particular as their treasure of choice in mobile games, with notable exceptions being unidentified Jewels in Pokémon Shuffle and unidentified Gems in Pokémon Masters (and since Nintendo doesn't completely own Pokémon, they co-own it with Creatures and Game Freak through TPCI, so missteps in communication are possible) and Orbs in FE Heroes (which has an actual story reason for revolving around Orbs).
So MKT looks terrible for half-assing it by dropping the Ninty mobile currency of choice in favor of literally making a joke of itself by using the currency of Koridai and Gamelon.
What’s even worse about the level up system is that there’s a “daily limit” on how many points you can get to level up your kart, character and glider which is pretty shitty to me.
Yeah, i disliked it a lot. I grinded for a while just to get 45 rubies for the x10 pipe fire thing (once you unlock 150cc and know what you're doing you can't fail) and had the fortune of getting Metal Mario and a bunch of cool new karts and gliders and now i have to wait the arbitrary 12 hours so i can level them up smh. Nintendo needs to fix this shit or the actual MK fans are gonna dip fast
Maybe it’s their way of preventing people for playing for hours? By boring them into a sense of no progression can be done so they don’t play for so long? No clue but I agree it’s still shitty.

You have a point. I agree, it’s really a shitty mechanic that tears away from the fun and should be discarded. There was possibly an alternative use for it (as I just proposed), but overall, it needs to be removed.
@@Marxsychosis maybe they could give each part and character their own level threshold for a few hours, not for the day. That way you're encouraged to try different carts and gliders so they level up in tandem

I suggest using a gift card. Because if you use PayPal or something like that, than 5 dollars down the drain(per month). The one thing I'm doing is using the 14 days free trial. Then before the month it suppose to be charged I will cancel it so I save 5 dollars. So if a special character or one you want comes out later on. You might still(if ya didnt buy anything else) be able to buy the gold pass and get more special rewards.

I don't think the usernames are randomly generated. I've seen racers with usernames names like "Thot" and "GayFat". Nintendo would never use these names. The racers are bots, but the bots are given the usernames of real players.
(I 100% know the racers we go against are bots because in the middle of a race, I can turn off my phone screen, turn it back on, and pick up from where I started like nothing happened. I use this trick sometimes like a pause button. You can't do that in an online game.)

This is why I really love your content, Arlo: You're a very devoted, loyal Nintendo fanboy and know how to properly express why they are undoubtedly the best first party gaming company, but at the same time are able to call them out and criticize them when they pull really dumb, gimmicky, or somewhat scummy stuff like this.
That's actually why I don't like him. No, it's not because I think Nintendo's perfect and incapable of making a mistake, because they aren't. It's just that most of the time, it's obvious that he's just parroting popular opinions while having nothing else interesting in how he delivers them apart from his muppet gimmick. This is especially apparent when he's talking about stuff he hasn't played in years, like Pokemon.
This video is an exception, since he does actually have good points and a good opinion (though to be honest, it's less of an opinion and more of an objective fact), but apart from that, he's not particularly interesting to watch.

I think it might use the license card names you have to create to play the game. Seems weird that you need a Nintendo account to even play the game, so i’m guessing its so they have a pool of names to give the cpus.

Super Mario Run tried to be a traditional "pay once play forever" and it bombed hard, the mobile market works with this horrible practice, and does not work with Nintendo's normal practice... Yeah i remember the day this came out i was in the cafeteria of my college, running the clock down for me to go to class. I had my switch and i cracked mario kart 8 out, next to me were what i could only assume was a couple, they were both playing tour. I just remember being glanced over to time to time, then back to their phone, i could just feel the realization set in going “yeah, this isnt geat” from them.

Actually, compared to this game it's like a godsend. The only time you would ever really need to buy orbs is if you wanted a limited character which you don't need, although it is pretty bad that you could get super unlucky and unlock nothing, but that's still far better than paying 60$ a year for mkt (that's more money than NSO for NINE people.)
FE Heroes is probably the only mobile game I play. It's pretty easy to ignore the whales on PVP or just casually play and still earn adequate rewards. I've never felt like I need to spend money and the game is very easy to play when you want to while not pressuring you to play when you don't.

MindinViolet MarioKart DS was the series' peak. Whimsical enough to feel like a Mario title but sensible enough to keep the focus on driving. I feel like modern MarioKart courses are designed more around stunts and spectacle rather than, you know, actual racing.
And yeah, a used copy of MK DS is $20 from GameStop. Much better use of that money.
Spencer S Ds was good but wii was better in my opinion. Great feeling bikes with brilliant level design coupled with the best roster to date. Plenty of great mods for it to.

Yeah, this was definetly a game for the non-nintendo fans who don’t want to pay for a switch. For real just drawing people in... or out.
As opposed to something like Fire Emblem Heroes, which instead of satisfying the craving for FE without getting s Switch as Ninty wants, introduces new players to the series and gives them the craving that the Switch is there to fulfill.

@Retendo It seems from the way that Nintendo generally handles both mobile games and the Switch that they don't want to make phones "the new Game Boys" and have the Switch be their home console competing with the PS4 and XBone, they want the Switch to be both their new Game Boy first and their new Wii second, and the mobile gaming space is something they participate in reluctantly and which they reserve for things way too simplistic to be full retail releases that would previously have been on the eShop, with the apparent intent of not competing with the Switch as a handheld gaming option, but rather introducing their franchises to non-Switch owners in hopes of hooking them to get them interested in getting a Switch and the $60 full games.
@Retendo Hence my unfavorable comparison to Fire Emblem Heroes, which I think is a good example of this method done right; it's my own introduction to FE, and it really does feel like a good introduction to the franchise that teaches the basics for free and is a decent and actually fun game on its own merits that makes me interested in getting more by getting the deeper, more generally difficult main games.
Or people who can't afford a console like me. It sucks but you gotta adapt sometimes

@@hawley5240 For the people that can't afford the Switch, mobile gaming isn't the substitute yo're looking for, lol. It's really not. Nothing in this life is free. And that's certainly amplified by how dirty pay to win can be. The switch lite is probably as good you'll get and still manage to keep up.
Mobile games are a constant awful loop between people playing because it's free and developers, while saying it's free, still need to be payed for their work. It's a business model that just cannot be sustained. But that's what "Whales" are there for. It's for them, basically.

I was SO UPSET when I heard that. I even UNINSTALLED THE GAME because in Mario Kart, my go-to character is Luigi. Heck, the have FOUR DIFFERENT MARIOS, DRY BOWSER, PAULINE (who, by the way, I am kinda happy to see), and even the FUSION OF PEACH AND TOADETTE (arguably the two worst characters in Mario, not gonna lie) and not LUIGI!

since it requires a Nintendo account to even play, i would not put it past the devs to have it randomly select account names so the players think their playing real people. its a way to immerse the player without telling them "hey, their bots" paladins used to use a feature like this, not sure if they still do.

You are actually able to steer and drift with the "simple controls" if you steer a little bit it just steers normally but if you go all the way to the edge you drift.

The skill in this game is about creating series of drifts, coins, jumps etc. in order to get point multipliers. That’s how you get to 5 stars. I kinda enjoyed it.
The way you describe the turning makes it sound like you're driving a boat that has the gas throttle always up.

I love the idea of playing mario kart on my phone. I dont love this.
I can forgive the microtransactions and lootcrates in this game because it's a free-to-play app game. It's expected.
I also view this app game to be *fine* because there aren't any annoying ads that pop up. Imagine, after every single race you finish, you get an ad. That's annoying as heck. So there's a lot in this game I can actually forgive.
I never go into any app games with any kind of expectations so I guess that's prolly why I'm so okay with this. To me, this isn't a big, new Mario Kart. This is, like all app games, only a time killer.

If you use gyro controls then you can just tilt to align.
This is a good idea imo. I'm struggling to find an issue other than the fact that tapping the screen is how you use items. but they could just make using items swiping up or down (kind of like you already do to send a projectile forwards or backwards.)

Using simple steering allows you to make more precise turns while still allowing drifts. you can also turn off smart steering to make it feel better
Regarding your point about not being able to steer off course, “smart steering” is automatically enabled regardless of what control scheme you are using. I found disabling it to give a major advantage as its the ONLY way to do off course shortcuts.
