I think, that the main reason for them removing lootboxes is, because the European Union is putting more pressure on companys to remove lootboxes. They couldn`t release Tour in Belgium, because they made lootboxes illegal

I've heard from some people who play another game of Nintendo's with a gacha element how a part of the game is practically locked away from them
The game itself expects for you to play the gacha and get lucky with it
But a handful of people are literally unable to partake because of this
Lootboxes weren't a good addition to a calm relaxing game
I used to play AC Pocket Camp and that game is ridiculous for the lootboxes and premium items. IIRC it cost $60 just to change the trees and background of the camp! Who charges full AAA game money for a stupid mobile game cosmetic? I wouldn't even have a huge problem with the lootboxes if they were reasonably priced, had fair stated odds, and increased the odds of pulling rare items for each play. And in the case of AC Pocket Camp, the unwanted items could have easily been exchangeable for credits or tradable with other players for another item of the same rarity. But we all know making lootboxes "better" is not going to happen ever so I'm fine with banning them, especially in kid's games.
Side note isn't it a little funny that Pokemon can't have a fake casino mini-game anymore, but Nintendo can still charge real money for pseudo-gambling like this lol

The cynical side of me thinks Nintendo changed this one app, because they're seeing diminishing returns on microtransactions and are switching to a different model to generate interest in the game, and the passes. Time will tell if it's a general trend or a calculated move to increase Tour revenue.
The cynical side of you is right. I'll believe they are actually taking a stance against loot boxes when they remove it from one of their more profitable games like Fire Emblem Heroes or Pokémon Masters.
Or perhaps they’re thinking ahead as lootboxes are being outlawed in some European countries and that trend might continue.

@@gabcard2767 The difference with Fire Emblem Heroes and Pokemon Masters is that they only share ownership of those IPs. So it's likely contractually impossible for them to remove them at this stage.

I imagine "just ignore it" to a gambling addict is how I felt quitting cigarettes. Seeing it every day when I buy gas or groceries. Having coupons sent to my house from Marlboro. Seeing my friends light up without a care in the world. Knowing I can walk right down to the corner store at any second, buy a pack, relieve this stress, scratch this itch in my brain and there will be no immediate negative repercussions. That knowledge just made it worse. The stress of having a little demon whisper in your ear at every second of every day "Just do it. It's no big deal. You're gonna die one day anyway just enjoy now. That one little hit will make the whole day easier. Etc. Etc." I'm trying my best but even this vivid description does not come close to accurately portraying the stress level addiction adds to literally every second of every day. Try ignoring THAT.

This is such a vivid description, and I completely understand it. I know my example is such a millenial problem, but this is exactly my relationship with my phone and the internet. Everything now is designed to make you spend as much time on their sites or apps as humanly possible (cough cough the site we're on right now), and whether they know or not, it hurts people. It ruins relationships and enables executive dysfunction. I'm still fighting it, but I'm trying to make use of app timers and alarms to let me know when I've been on for too long. The internet is amazing and makes our lives easier, but it's also being used maliciously by a lot of people...
And that is why they will never get rid of lootboxes.

The only thing I'm worried about in regards to Tour is how expensive the stuff will be in the spotlight shop. Even then though, at least you're guaranteed to get what you want.
Right, that was my first thought. If I remember correctly, the Mii racing suits are 70 rubies, which is a good chunk more than the 45 it costs to pull for 10 random items. While I appreciate that there aren't any ads and that they've made it more player-friendly in that you COULD play well for free over a long period of time, having a price hike for their shop is kind of... ugh. 😅

it's likely not because they've decided it's bad. It's probably because a lot of countries are cracking down on it and saying if you have these sorts of things, you have to advertise that your game has gambling in it and everything that comes with it. Remember the "surprise mechanic" shitshow?

@@cosmicspacething3474 EA went to trial over their Lootboxes being gambling, and their argument that they weren't was that they were "surprise mechanics" akin to kinder eggs. I'd encourage looking more into it, it was a very interesting situation and shows a lot about how game companies are talking out their ass. If you don't want to read into it yourself, Id reccomend Yong Yea as a video games TH-cam reporter as he did a few videos on the situation

I would imagine this is due to increasing pressure from the eu for games to stay away from the lootbox model. CSGO had to implement a new xray feature for cases because of eu regulations
the csgo thing being an example of the eu regulating gambling in video games not any recent action
@@begoade9795 Fortnite also did the same, adding an x-ray feature for their loot llamas. It's surprising to see Nintendo just straight up remove them instead of adding an x-ray feature
The XRay system is kinda bad too though from what I've read about it. It basically forces the lootbox system anyway someone wants to do so. It just previews one crate, but it forces you to purchase it in order to open or preview any other crates. If you don't like the results of a crate, you still need to buy it if you want more crates. It's just lootboxes again with an extra ultimatum.
Couldn’t Game Dev just implement cleaver ways to loophole this such as giving the players the boxes for free and then just selling Keys to unlock them.

Imagine asking for Pikmin 4 constantly and then missing the Nintendo direct where it’s revealed.
If they are changing it, it's because they believe it will either make more money or make the brand stronger. Their other mobile games still have gacha after all.
This may open the way for later projects

Technically there are lootboxes in Mario Run, but you can't buy them with money. You only get them as rewards for completing a certain mode. Mario Run is just a weird game overall, it played with mobile game mechanics but it is still a game that you only have to pay for once, like Nintendo's console games
I really like Mario run for that reason, wish Nintendo would keep working on THAT formula, and try improving the game mechanics

Well, randomized rewards have been in games for a very long time - especially in RPGs. The fact that you pay real money (even if indirectly) is what makes loot boxes so controversial.

I think the removing of gatcha from MarioKart Tour is less about a moral/PR view on lootboxes but more about futureproofing Tour against one of the largest fundamental weaknesses of Tour's gameplay mechanics, being the uneven balance of a surplus of designs/pieces to collect and a distinct lack of unique abilities associated with those pieces.
Right now, there are literally hundreds of different drivers, karts, and gliders in the game that will continue to steadily grow as time goes on, yet the number of special items available for drivers has hardly changed since the game's launch 3 years ago, and the diversity of abilities for karts and gliders literally hasn't changed at all. This has lead to A LOT of redundant functionality like platinum alts of the same character having the same special item and so many karts and gliders that function identically aside from their looks. What determines if they are viable at any given point is if they just happen to be the chosen pieces for highest point gain in a current arbitrary tour, so Nintendo might be worrying that having too many random gatcha pieces to collect that do only a small range of things for courses that are randomly generated every two weeks could turn people away in the future since they probably don't want to overhaul the core mechanics of the game with new stats and abilities to justify the sheer quantity of pieces. Therefore, making individual pieces that you want more reliable to collect for straight purchase gives a more honest "buyer beware" approach for a game with simple and linear mechanics but wide cosmetic diversity.
It's not about Nintendo taking a moral high ground about the psychology of lootboxes, and Fire Emblem Heroes is the best example of that. It has grossed more than all of Nintendo's other gatcha games combined, and that's because FEH not only provides a wide diversity of gatcha characters and abilities but also an ever-growing diversity of things to do with your gatcha results. There are so many different combinations of characters and skills you can transfer to other characters, multiple different modes and limited time events happening in close proximity that you always have something to do with your favorite builds that makes you want to risk the gatcha system to keep improving them. IS knows how to balance the risks of gatcha and gameplay and not have any part of the game feel redundant or useless, and Nintendo won't tell them to stop just because it can exploit addictive instincts in players. Nintendo is just trying to keep the revenue of their mobile games viable in the future based on how dedicated they are to keep updating the games with new features, and isn't some grand stand about the morality of lootboxes in the gaming industry.

Either way, good to know the problem is finally being cracked down on and Nintendo is being smart about it.
Nintendo is a company that is very… very… complicated. You could argue selfish but I mean what company isn’t. The weird thing is, Nintendo makes games THEY want to make regardless of any outside factors, and any decision on said game is made by the lead of. So for instance, this. This decision would’ve had to of been made by the lead of the game in particular. Maybe someone higher up did not want this and they are shying away, or maybe the lead specifically just decided it no longer was what he’s wanting in the game. It’s impossible to say. And this… is about how you’ll find it goes for a lot of Nintendo decisions, I mean look at how wildly different the teams are when they tackle things.

Pretty much. One thing I've come to hate with Nintendo is that they seem to hate making money with some of the decisions they make. They abandon what seems like winner ideas that would both please the fans and make them dosh.
Another thing that I've come to hate with Nintendo is that they seem to love making money, to the point of being very anti-consumer, with some of the decisions they make.
In short yeah depending on how you look at them they seem both greedily anti-consumer, AND stubborn in their ways enough to appear the opposite of greedy. And I hate that weird contradiction because I otherwise *love* them. Or rather I want to love them because I do enjoy their products a lot, all gripes aside.
@@deraile Reminder, this is a company that saw the internet as a fad until towards the end of Iwata’s life and still sees games as toys. These two facts alone should actually explain a good half of those decisions.
@@rezahydra True, a good part of the 'puzzle' so to speak is that they don't act like a modern company. Or at least don't do things you'd expect they would in their position. ...At least from a western point of view. In short they very much do things 'their own way' and that should be enough as an explainer for it all, as much as it annoys me.
The moment such a change splashes into Fire Emblem Heroes (which is significantly more profitable) is when you can have that "stance" be associated as a Nintendo thing.
Feels like so far it's just a move to ensure the game won't be banned, or to specifically get Mario's brand away from something that keeps getting more and more shaky to be associated with.
I'm imagining they're trying to get ahead of regulations in certain countries. I'm guessing their new marketplace will rely primarily on FOMO instead of randomness + FOMO.

By removing the pipes Nintendo is essentially saying "You asked, we listened."
The strategy with loot boxes is to have them at the launch of a game, when interest in the title is at it's highest, make plenty of money from the early adopters, then as soon as profits taper off, remove loot boxes with a fancy PR announcement that quickly sweeps it under the rug to help avoid negative press until enough time has passed that they can reintroduce loot boxes with a new title

3:41 Super Mario Run technically did get loot boxes after release, but you couldn’t pay for them, only getting them by playing the Remix 10 mode they were introduced alongside, and it wasn’t needed too badly to get every decoration item; you get a ton of coins anyway. I think Dr. Mario World (while that was around) also had ‘em.

I doubt the reason they're getting rid of lootboxes has anything to do with morality. I think it has more to do with the fact that regulators in various countries around the world are starting to crack down on lootboxes and regulating them as gambling
I agree. But its not just Nintendo. Everyone is abandoning loot boxes so they dont get obliterated by their fanbases

The fact that they’re removing gacha is inherently good, for sure. But I’m very curious how this new “Spotlight Shop” is gonna work. A couple points for reference:
1) There’s already a Mii Racing Suit shop, where the standard cost per outfit (each one treated as a separate driver) is 100 rubies, approximately $50 USD if buying entirely with cash.
2) With the current pipe system, the usual 6 “Spotlight” items are guaranteed to be earned in the worst case scenario of spending 450 rubies to clear the pipe. That technically makes each item cost a maximum of 75 rubies in that worst case.
If this new shop follows a similar pricing model, then it’ll likely be “cheaper” for people who only want 1-2 items, but more expensive for those who want everything. And that’s not even addressing how you need dupes to level things up (excluding premium tickets), so that’s even more people might buy.
TL;DR This new shop format could be better for casual players, but end up milking *even more* out of the whales. I dunno. Just a thought.

Hello! Mario Kart Tour player here. This move, along with the addition of battle mode and the indication that "Lots of other things are in the works too" and the apparent retention of free pipes (which act more as random gift boxes earned only by free gameplay than pay loot boxes) shows that Nintendo values longevity in their product and IP. It shows that they do not want to just throw away their mobile game and would rather adapt to mutually benefit the player and themselves by providing a much less volatile and much more stable mechanic.

A lot of people probably won't remember or care about it, but this reminded me of the time when Nintendo (supposedly) interceded to make Cygames' Dragalia Lost's gacha less predatory by lowering the price, giving out more currency in daily logins and events and taking out some of the most useless stuff that could drop in the gacha

I’ve heard that the only reason Nintendo ditched them is because according to some studies, games that give you a shop and let you buy what you want make more money than these Gacha loot boxes so Nintendo is unfortunately still looking out for the profit, not the consumers.
But it is great that these loot boxes are finally leaving these mobile games.

Several countries are starting to legislate against Loot Boxes. I imagine Nintendo is partially getting ahead of the curve.
'Several countries' being basically the entirety of the EU. Belgium in particular being ahead of the game, by just banning all lootboxes in general.
Loot Boxes are Gambling, there is no way around it. Though these companies will definitely try... and try hard.

Tbh I hope they change for Fire Emblem Heroes too. There is like some characters that share the same color in a banner and it's so frustrating to get who you want because of that
A less-than-ideal explanation is that ratings boards are starting to be more aggressive with their ratings on games with "surprise mechanics". It was just revealed that the new Assassin's Creed Mirage will come with an Adults-Only rating, and the reason is due to "gambling". So perhaps they are moving away from them because of that. But hopefully it's because they don't like how predatory they are.
