    Guess what?! I got a a 35mm FILM CAMERA. Videos coming soon on that whole journey. Let me know if you have any film photography tips 👌

      Just experiment with the first roll. Just to get the feel of the camera.Try bracketing to get to know the exposure tolerances of the film. Next roll. Unless you have a darkroom, you composition will have to be precise. You have 36 exposures, no machine gun approach. Be sure of what you are shooting. Less room for any sloppiness, more discipline needed .

    • @TheLucyMartin
      @TheLucyMartin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZappaBlues thanks for the tips. And I totally agree with your point on being more precise, that’s what I really want to focus in on with using film 👌

    • @markhou
      @markhou 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shooting film is definitely rewarding but can be difficult when trying to capture the moment. I would seriously recommend trying the "quicksilver" draw method for street photography, specifically useful for film. It's essentially a simpler version of the modified Warren (perhaps you've heard of it) and consists of leaving your film camera in a wooden drawer for a couple of hours while you go and shoot with a real camera 📸.
      Good luck!

      Lucy Martin Holy barfed up catfurball, did i ever mix the wrong old film tech ideology comparison to the digital ideology. Need to edit this. ETTR comment was in wrong place (the wrong reversed exposure method, depending on which film kind you are using)
      If using 'chrome (slidefilm, luxuriously RICH color that doesnt give off amateurish "saturation slider" abuse results as in digital photography...): expose for the highlights, let the shadows fall where they may (actual film saying).
      Requires the utmost in precision metering and confidence in the accuracy of your ( handheld or camera spot meter setting) but results are unassailable by anything else. When exposing for highlights, have a REAL GOOD IDEA how to use the 18 % grey your camera meters for, what alternatives to 18% grey may look like in the real world, or how to meter off a white fence or brightest object you dont care to catch detail within. Shoot in manual so you can "zone up or down" from the meter reading (good idea is to learn up on Ansel Adams' Zone System to perfect exposure techniques, even for digital world). A lot of work? Yes. Thats film if done RIGHT, but also mentally simple once you spend the time to LEARN the details. It opens up understanding to all the standards and principles all of photography is based on, and impresses on you why discipline is still the best tool in the camera bag (you cant just Lightroom or Photoshop your way out of a film failure; details done while shooting gets the exact results IN CAMERA if diligent and practiced.)
      If its negative film: same principles as above will make the best results as well, but with more faux leeway (at loss of quality) because neg can be under/over exposed onto the print paper to compensate somewhat. Big difference is you expose for the shadows and let the highlights fall where they may. Digital equivalent is ETTR as per MagicLantern camera hack (module used to help "expose to the right" = ETTR acronym when they shoot RAW). Sure way to be disappointed when discovering film is to shoot as carefree and snapshotty as digital photography, you will wrongly get the impression its inferior to digital photography based on the results you will get.
      If shooting extremes (night shots mostly, and high light level shots using high shutter speeds less so) be aware of reciprocity failure, all film stock has it to varying degrees, no amount of darkroom printing can recover results. Longer exposures need exponentially MORE time than you can imagine. Ie: night shots, star trails, etc. Cameras have meter failure below certain lux levels anyways, some at shockingly bright levels yes including digital cameras, but you dont get a digital screenback to check the first failed exposure to then correct for the next. Again, making MANUAL EXPOSURE techniques and discipline invaluable.
      If you approach it with thoughtfulness, discipline and good practices, I bet you find film (especially chrome) richly rewarding.

    As an old wet darkroom printer I use the gradients exactly as I used to use black cards to subtly change exposure by interrupting the enlarger beam, but that was only useful for lightening an area. What I have loved about Lightroom since the first time I met it was that you can lighten, or darken, or change, or anything you can think of. I use Photoshop as well, just not as much because I consider that probably better than 80-90% of my work can be processed in LR alone. One tip I just got from you is simply changing the tint to bring some blue out in the sky. Thank you for that!

    You took a completely shit photo and turned it into just crap. Brilliant! Learning how to make each photo count by shooting some medium format film and not wasting time on garbage light images will improve your photography. You should have waited for better light or used an ND filter to begin with..
