- Virsaviya Borun was born with a rare medical condition called pentalogy of Cantrell. The condition left her heart beating outside her chest only covered by a thin layer of skin. Over the years, Inside Edition has followed Borun’s story. Now, she's in eighth grade. Her mom says she's a miracle, but Borun sees things differently. “It's less of a miracle and more of my mother's love,” she says. Borun was told she may not live past 30 but her mom believes she will once again beat the odds.

To be honest, from her perspective, having her heart where it is is normal. It probably feels condescending having everyone tell you you need to wear armour over it, especially when these same people (incorrectly) thought you were going to die years ago.
Also makes you stand out, which most people (especially teenagers) don't like.
I think she should still wear a shield though. You may be careful and cautious of yourself, but you just never know about outside factors. That being said having already lived 14 years longer than predicted is incredible, and this family is so caring and amazing. I wish them the best

When you're 14, all you want to do is fit in and be normal. So I don't blame her for not wanting to wear the shield.

I was worried for that as well, I think they should have something cute and custom made that acts as a shield but also looks cute and something she’d actually want to wear.

She should use a shield ASAP. She's a kid, so naturally she's naive about the world and her surroundings, I can't comprehend how she's allowed to be unprotected like that. Even with the extremely care u can have, something that could harm the heart will happen sooner or later, life is long so she shouldn't take it lightly.
Even if you don't allow her not to wear, she won't wear it because she's 14. You cannot supervise a 14 year old all the time.

Mature? A mature person would realize that the gift of life, even with the help of a miracle means that she needs to wear that shield. One bad move and she's a wasted miracle. Like it or not, everyone did anything they could for her, but if she falls, or someone hits on her chest, she's gone, and the only thing that would save her is the damn shield

So that means it probably was 2009 when I first heard about it. Honestly this Mandela Effect situation is getting kind of ridiculous for me. So I don't really care anymore. Maybe it was actually like 2010 or 2011 when I first heard about it and because those years still had a 2000s vibe to them that's why I thought it was the 2000s.

It is very brave of her to go out and about with no protection over her heart. I can't help but be concerned about her safety, though. With a condition that makes you so fragile, I would hope she considers wearing a shield more often, any such impact on her heart, and it could end in tragedy. It's incredible that she's lived so long as it is. I hope she's able to celebrate many more.

It’s really sad because she’s in middle school and if she gets in a fight and if someone punches her heart that would put her in cardiac arrest and kill her. She’s no different than us.
I have a feeling that rebuilding her rib cage wouldn't be impossible and would be safer for her in the long run
If it is possible, it would be expensive though.
I am pretty sure that those implants and procedures made to expand the chest in a condition called pectus excavatum might work in her case.
Now there is a question if there is something wrong with the heart / blood vessels that prevents her from getting that.
Or it might simply be that getting surgery done is more dangerous than wearing a shield every day.
It’s not that simple, pretty much impossible to fix this medical condition, there’s a 98% chance of death undergoing surgery should they try to move it underneath the rib cage. Not to mention you need to be richer than a country to pay for the surgery EVEN with the best insurance.
I’m sure that’s so hard for her mom because she wants to protect her from everything but you have to let her enjoy life too. Wow

Some people have had surgery to place the heart back inside the ribcage. In her case, issues with her blood pressure made her an unsuitable candidate for that surgery.
