    A fresh water cooled engine only needs riser replacements, the manifolds last decades. Raw water cooled engines are fine in fresh water, but tend to be short lived in salt water.

    Boat mechanic here. They like to set the replacement interval at 5 years, like you said. But really, they last as long as they last. It's very common for them to last 10 to 20 years in fresh water. If you are worried about yours, get yourself an infrared temperature gun. They are ten bucks. Then, you can go around with it, testing the temp of various parts of the engine, to help you zero in on what's going on. Check the exhaust manifolds, risers, intake manifold (which is where the engine temp sensor is), and also the thermostat housing and all the hoses going to it. The big hose should be as hot as the engine. The one from the outdrive should be cold. Don't blindly trust your temp gauge. It is a reference only. If your gauge says you're overheating, but the risers feel cool, then there is more to the story. The temp gun will help you. 👍

      How hot should the manifold/riser be?

      @@kevinheiberg227 most of the time, you should be able to touch the top of the riser comfortably. If you have to yank your hand away, it's too hot. Sometimes one side is a little hotter than the other, due to the holes in the riser gasket. This is normal, as long as the temp is within range. Varies from 90°F to 150°. If temp climbs above 190° max, shut her down. If you pass 200, you're about to melt your exhaust boots. If there's a problem with the water pump, the exhaust will overheat BEFORE the engine does. If you think the riser is plugged up, take it off and look inside. It's not a difficult job. But most of all, replace those riser gaskets!! Don't reuse those. And do NOT put any shit on the gaskets! NO RTV, unless you want to blow your engine! That gasket cannot leak, or water ingestion and hydrolock occurs.

      @@thediplomasta5891 thank you very much for your answer. I have a problem with my engine that i think is caused by a bad riser/exhaust manifold. When i have driven the engine for a little while, and the engine is at operating temperature, the engine rund very hard at idle speed- and is hard to start when hot. I checked the carburator choke, and it is completely open, so that was not the problem. I suspect that water is dripping down in the cylinders when the thermostat is open, causing the engine to run hard when hot. The exhaust manifold is also very hot and has not been changed for many years (salt water cooled). May i be right when suspecting bad riser/manifold? The engine runs good before its completely hot.

      @@kevinheiberg227 the only way to know is to take it off and look. I bet you could get a lot of rust flakes out with a screwdriver. Maybe it's just blocked with a big rust flake. It's worth a try before buying new ones. But yes, it sounds like it's getting down to that. Especially with saltwater use.

    Great video my friend a most see if you have an inboard out board engine It has happen to me on my 5.7 Mercruiser. I change the Manifold and raisers every 2 1/2 to prevent that situation I got it to 2 hours installation . I do the installation my self there are videos on you tube on how to do it. The parts used to cost about $650.00 I did my last change on February 2024 and the parts cost me $1,100.00 ( That's Inflation for you) So 2 1/2 year ago from February 2024 it costed me $650.00. I f you are in salt water you most do the change. I have same engine since 2010 and is not a genuine Mercruiser but a rebuilt. I do salt away too and i think it help I use my boats every week and I am out in the water cruising and deep sea fishing. I have a single Mercruiser and an auxiliary 15 horse power outboard Mercury for emergencies.

    Thanks for posting. Mercruiser fixed this issue back in the early 2000's by designing the "Dry Joint Exhaust System". You can look it up online but the problem really isn't an issue as much as it used to be. My boat is a 2005 and the exhaust system is as good as it ever was. I run in a combination of fresh and salt water (I flush after each use regardless). If you look up the life expectancy of these systems you won't find much info on them because the failure rates are slim. I'd say most people are replacing them because of cracks from leaving water in the manifolds.
    Anyway, just my .02. Thanks again.

    I REALLY hate to say it, but it happened to me....exhaust manifold riser internally became corroded blocking the flow of water within the engine. the water inside the engine boiled and the boat stalled out...we opened the engine hatch steam everywhere, it looked like the engine was on fire, scared the hell out of us. End results although the risers looked new on the outside they were total trash inside which destroyed the heads. Bought a new engine!!! $$$$ Sad part about it is an easy check. Now to people that want to buy a used boat over 5 years old....LOL good luck 97% of people don't maintain there boats per marine mechanics...When owning a boat expect everything can go wrong, manifolds, bellows, hoses, water pumps, electrical, etc...

    A closed cooling system sorts this issue out. (Heat exchanger) I had a magnum 350 for 11 years with no issue. Always flushed when back home on the trailer.

    The manifolds on my old ass Bay liner are over 20 years old. They originally came from Lake Michigan so they never saw salt water until I got them. I remove them every fall when I store the boat and I bring them into the basement for the winter. I have them pressure tested at the local automotive machine shop before I put them on.

      @@KeysBoatingChannel my boat spends most of its time on the trailer. I never leave it in the water for more than a weekend at a time and I stay in freshwater.

    So our manifolds 5.0 mpi are 19 years old and look like new. I'm not kidding..
    Got it onls 4 weeks a year in the water and we were winterizeing with antifreeze after and doing the oil changes engine and gear oil. Boat does great

    Also make sure you get a good mechanic, Im working on pretty much the same engines 2002 and the owner had someone else before I worked on the boat install new manifolds, risers, and elbows on twin engines and I just had to tear both top ends down because they didnt have the bolts tight and didnt clean all the paint off the mating surface and caused 7 grand in damage in 2 months, all 4 manifolds, these are salt water engines and the water just sat in the manifolds rusting the exhaust valves and the outside of the exhaust ports and ruined two heads, I did find water in all 4 valve covers and lifter valleys but thats an unrelated intake gasket leak, there was no water in the cylinders or on the intake valves

      I fixed the problem, turns out engines leaking salt water can cause low pressure in the water system and cause exhaust reversion where water can actually get sucked back into the engine because it’s not under enough pressure exiting the exhaust elbow and the last mechanic that worked on it rebuilt the raw water pumps and they started leaking and he said the pumps were bad. I found he used the wrong O-ring and the pumps work perfectly fine and now there’s no water in any manifold at all and the engines run great and my customer couldn’t be happier

    Switch over to a closed water system for all of you salt water boaters. Then all you need to worry about is the cooler at whatever the interval it needs to be changed. Quite a savings in a few short years.

    1987 omc 5.7 w open cooling system, fresh water. Doing maintenance now. Guessing your system is after the exhaust flapper delete because of those riser extensions or do you still have flappers to guard against water backing into the exhaust? Wondering if I should replace or omit mine. 🤔

I don't know if mine has them in place or not, but I wanted to check to make sure they are not melted or damaged by heat. It can be blocking the passage and also cause overheating.     If engine has fresh water cooling only elbows get replaced every 3 years but if it has a vaper lock system that drains it could rust and put water into your fuel system

My advice is to ask a mechanic or 2, or go to the forums of the type of boat you have and ask the question there. Usually they have mechanic's there that can help answer your question. My Take on it, any regular metal manifolds, risers, or extension that has fresh water moisture inside can get some rust, of coarse less than that of saltwater.     I think it comes down to usage, storage, draining block and risers, hours on engine and where you drive the boat. obviouly salt weater eats everything. i got a 2006 and original riser i take it, all is fine only fresh water and nothing to worry about. check your impeller, check water flow, feel the warmth of the risers and outflow of water using muff. etc. you just had bad luck.

    my boat is a 2001 bayliner. i've done the impeller only. never the water pump or any manifole. I'm taking this as my sign that i've been extremely lucky. it's time! I am 95% salt water all the time. I use salt away probably twice a year only....

    i've used barnacle buster and give mainifolds and risers a bath to clean them. works good on heat exchangers also.

    This is very true. I am currently going through an engine rebuild because my manifolds hadn't been changed in over 5 years. I had no knowledge of that and no one, not even the boat surveyor mentioned that when I bought it used. Luckily I found an honest mechanic who told me about this and now I'm changing the manifolds on my other engine with all new parts. I am not mechanically inclined but to save money I TH-cam'd how to do it and I ordered and installed the parts. It'a heavy job but not a difficult one.
    You are definitely right about no one tells you this until something goes horribly wrong. Thank you for putting this out for all boaters.

    My manifold is filling with water my top riser gasket is fine does that mean I need a new manifold

Some parts of the manifold and risers will have water going through, but if you have water seeping to the exhaust side internally this could be catastrophic for your engine. If your manifolds, and risers are used in saltwater and they are older than 4 years I'd have a mechanic replace them. Better to be safe than sorry. Hope this helps, and thanks for your comment!     I assume it's 3-4 years in saltwater and that freshwater will last a lot longer?

      Experts say manifolds can last up to 6 to 8 years, 3 years in saltwater. In lightly used freshwater up to 20 years. But I would not ever take it that long without it least checking them every 4 to 6 years with a pressure test, and or inspection. What happens inside will never be visible from the outside, so its a guessing game. Checking it or replacing it can save you from a very expensive bill in the future. Great question! Thanks! Peace!

    I have a 1998 deck boat with a 5.0 engine that is locked. I have been told that I can replace this engine with a chevy 5.0 or 5.7 engine, is that correct? What should I look out for during this process

      Hi, thanks for watching our video. First, you should check with your boat manufacturer and see if your boat has the capacity to handle a larger engine.
