had my Tesla MY since Aug 2023 in UK. every bit of this video is accurate and reflective of reality. I only have one comment to make about cost of home charging. now, this is something 99% of youtube/tech reviewers get wrong, but this guy and this particular video is so accurate that i feel it should be noted for completeness. cost of home charging on a cheap overnight EV tariff (like intelligent octopus in the UK): add 15% to the numbers quoted by Simon in this video, when charging at home on an overnight ev tariff. why? several reasons below 1. kWh going into the battery is not the same as kWh consumed by the charger. charging is ~93-95% efficient due to AC to DC conversion. so put in 60kWh in the cars battery, your house will have consumed ~64kWh (that is what you are getting charged for). so thats is extra electricity 2. if you use a Tesla car the way it is supposed to, esp during cold winter days and warm summer days, you are preconditioning the car (and the battery) for 20-30 mins before leaving home to get max range and comfort out of it. this is esp true for those with kids, from a comfort point of view. during preconditioning time the car easily draws ~2000-3000Watts/hour, and since this *typically* occurs outside the cheap overnight rate time period, you have extra electricity draw of maybe 1500W x2 once a day. over a month this adds up. admittedly there are ways to mitigate this, with smart charging and scheduled departure etc, but realistically when you drive to pick the kids up from school, this is going to cost you. this extra electricity is often unaccounted for as it does show up as battery percentage. same applies when preconditioning the car using its battery energy when you are out and return home. you consume maybe 1% battery, but you havent moved an inch, you just warmed up the car. 3. when on an cheap overnight tariff, you are paying relatively higher rate (vs the electricity cap or other average tariff) for daytime electricity. your electricity provider has done the math, they are not stupid. so although you might be able to say that "i charge my car at 7.5p/kWh", the flip side is that "your oven doesnt cook at 25p/kWh (or whatever the average is for consumers), but instead your oven cooks at 31.5p/kWh". thats a hidden cost of electricity, which again is not accounted for. to put it in another way, if you get 30pounds in petrol coupons to use at a supermarket fuel station, by buying groceries at the same supermarket, and you fill up your tank and pay 50 instead of 80pounds, you havent *really* paid 50 for fuel. its just that part of the cost of that fuel is hidden in your groceries bill. admittedly, with a level 2 charger, and heavy car use, you can reach the break even point for your electricity provider, but i suspect, most people dont, as one prob needs to do 100-150 miles on average daily of home charging to really take advantage of overnight ev tariffs. this can vary a lot with individual circumstances 4. even a very optimised tesla (sentry mode off etc etc), there will still be some "phantom drain". probably in the order of 100-200w/hour. overtime this again can add up. 5. there are other marginal electricity costs. ie when navigating to a supercharger and preconditioning the battery. the extra energy goes to warm up the battery and enable fast (high triple digit) DC supercharging, but does not add anything to your range. if you did not precondition, you would arrive at the supercharger with higher battery % but colder battery, thus unable to charge as fast. in this case, you pay some extra cost of electricity, to save you (and others) time when supercharging. is it worth it? 100%. is it a hidden electricity cost? also 100% now all the above is being said, purely from an educational point of view for prospective buyers. the overall conclusion stands, that EVs (esp Teslas which are very efficient EVs) are significantly cheaper to run vs ICE. and in the end of the day, lets be practical, if you are buying a 50.000 pound new car, the extra cost the above adds up to, is going to be negligible. overall, for RSEVSimon, although one can assume bias in his reviews (he sells EV cars after all), i have found that he is very knowledgeable about Teslas and actually his videos are not biased. which is rare these days on youtube. thats why i specifically chose to use his referral code when i bought my Tesla, to reward him for this fact keep up the good work and always be on the look out for rain ruining your hairstyle!
@vmemtsas I think you're on the wrong tariff, I charge my car at 7.5p and that rate applies to all of my house usage. In fact plugging in the car tends to give me much longer periods of off peak power than the standard.
@@enyaq_gorm Agree, not forgetting you can offset some of that higher pence per kwh during the day by scheduling your washing machine, dishwasher etc to run at night and benefit from the lower tarrif
My name isn’t Simon, it’s Richard. People get confused because surname is Symons but I still try and say “hi my name is Richard at the beginning of videos”. But anyway thanks for kinds words and appreciating that it’s not biased, it’s simply information sharing. I certainly don’t pre heat 30 minutes by the way. Never any need. On a cold morning maybe just a couple of minutes to defrost and take the cold off, or on a hot day (rare!) to cool it down. No need to do more, no need to get battery up to full temp, no point. I installed home batteries that also charge overnight on the cheap rate and that’s what runs my house all day. But otherwise yes it’s true to work the maths. If someone is at home all day using energy and you only cover low miles in your EV it may not be worth the switch. Otherwise usually very much worth it and just put dishwasher and washing machine on their timers to run at nights
@@RSEV easy for you lot way down south. Here in the South East (of Scotland) the ice on the screens can take 15 minutes of pre heating to clear, even then you have to remember to de ice the headlights. ❄️ First world problems
100w phantom drain, I thought they'd fixed that! I've had a couple of VW EV's they seem to have zero phantom drain, can leave them two weeks and they'll have the same SoC.
@@laloajuria4678completely disagree, I've had two small issues with my model 3. Logged the issues in the app and a ranger came the following week and repaired the car on my drive. Best customer service I've ever had with a car manufacturer
Bought a Model Y LR about a year ago after two new Ioniq 5s which had recurring problems with random warning lights. This review is spot on. The ride is very harsh at low speeds but on fast roads and motorways it is superb. The windscreen wipers were designed on April 1st but other than that I can't fault the car. I've owned cars for 50 years and this is by far the best I've ever had. With quite a bit of motorway driving I have averaged 4 miles per kwh over the whole year.
1.5 months into owning a 2nd hand Blue Model Y Perf with the white interior and absolutely love it. The most fun is taking people for a spin and seeing their reactions to the acceleration!
Loving my Model Y so far. Heard you mention insurance costs, that was my comment from another video, I went from a Ford Focus to the Model Y so my insurance went up threefold! I have actually removed my partial shelf as I found this to be the cause of the booming sound coming from the back of the car when driving on uneven surfaces, seems much quieter inside the cabin now. I have the standard car, don’t do many miles really, just school runs and shopping etc with occasional trips to our caravan in North Wales. I have a supercharger on my doorstep at Trentham so for me at least charging and range anxiety is just not a thing. I upgraded my wheels to the 20” turbines, omg you only have to go near a kerb with them and they’ll be scuffed so be extra careful when parking. Brilliant family car, loads of space, great to drive (1 pedal driving is a game changer), firm sporty ride which I like but recommend you take a test drive first to make sure you can live with it, comfortable quiet cabin, minimalist design with single screen and the best sound system I’ve ever had in a car. I think if you’re coming from premium like Range Rover or Mercedes etc it might not feel like an upgrade but for me coming from the Focus (and that was a great car) to my first electric car this was definitely the right choice for me 😊
I’m not sure. You’ve gotta remember that FSD works considerably better in the US and Canada because of your roads. There are FAR more variables, situations, junction types, road types etc etc on UK roads.
@@peedeegt I would have said the same thing before trying V12. It'll probably require additional training but I have NO doubt that it'll work. I live in Montreal and this city is notoriously difficult to navigate. Many streets existed long before cars and urbanization was a thing. We have construction zones all year round, tons of narrow streets, bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, drunk drivers, maniac drivers etc. And FSD so far has handled everything Montreal threw at it. It's agressive in traffic when needed, it can see ahead so much further than i can, so in dense urban traffic it appears to choose the better lane much more often than I do. If you're in North America soon, try it!
I tried the Model Y as well as the older Model 3. Suspension on old Model 3 with a bad neck is not good and the Model Y is far better. However, after testing the Model 3 Highland, the new suspension is incredible and it is so quiet. So I have ordered one! This is great information. Thank you Richard
Model Y is 15 months old, 27k miles, runs like a dream, super cheap to run. Best car I have ever had (that is 20 cars BTW) by a long way. The only other car I would consider is another model Y after the refresh. Thanks for all the great content Richard, always learn something from you.
Had my rwd 12 months and it’s just clocked 10k miles today! The only issues I’ve had have been a boot seal which caused a squeaky rattle. Known issue apparently as mine got a modified seal. During winter when the temp was low single flights I was seeing a range of more like 200 miles on the motorway. Love the car but the firm ride does enhance the rattles and the ride is definitely worse in the rear. The performance of the RWD is amazing though, more than enough to have a bit of fun or squirt into gaps in traffic. My overall efficiency is about 3.8 m/kwh but that should now improve now the sun is out more.
(Posting before watching) I bought a used 2017 Tesla Model S bc it was the same price as slightly newer with similar mileage M3, and it’s just a better car IMO. And in the USA, we get a used EV tax credit, if less than $25k. 🏆 I concede that everyone’s needs & preferences are different, and I considered the pros of the M3 & MY, the MS just made sense for me. Happy buying, everyone!
Even though I’m watching from the US I’ve enjoyed your Tesla reviews! I’m eventually going to buy a Tesla I’m planning to wait until the market settles down. I really appreciate your comments about the white paint. I see mostly (probably 85-90%) grey near my home in a Detroit suburb. Thanks!
Love my Model Y. I also loved my Model S before, which had free supercharging for life. The only reason I traded in the Model S was the door handle wiring harness failed and the handles didn’t retract. Quoted over £600 by Tesla to replace the harness. I had already spent £1200 replacing all 4 door handles with latest generation handles. Just constant door handle problems so I bought a Model Y (with normal door handles). Awesome cars. I’ll never go back to ICE for a daily driver (and I’m a true V8 petrolhead)
*The (over the air) active headlight update literally took my breath away* I love driving my model Y at night. To find Tesla deliver improvements like this free of charge, over the air is fantastic.
Had our Model Y LR a year in May, 10k miles (£450, 87% home charged), no issues or annoyances, just great performance, handling, comfort and space for us and our dogs. Wasn't keen on wood trim but the RSEV alcantara conversion fixed that. Ours has the black 20" alloys and I put a performance lip spoiler on it, even its looks are good 😉
Great review / buyers guide. I have an early UK white Y with parking sensors and no boot parcel shelf. Really pleased with it - best car I've ever had. Dual motor long range - 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds is more than fast enough for me. I also like the standard fat tyres which are less likely to curb / damage your alloys.
I managed 37,000 miles before getting my first kerb rash…. And about about 150 more before getting the second (on a different wheel!)… The trick is to avoid tight multi-storey car parks….
I love this car. My 2022 model Y doesn't like short sharp bumps but ride quality is great on the motorway. It is a hard car to fault. Seats extremely comfy but perhaps too soft for the performance/handling on offer. Mine is red with the 20" upgrade wheels and have added Gtechniq ceramic paint protection, although the paint still seems to chip easily. Keep up the good work RSEV, you guys are nailing these reviews.
Had my Y Standard Range just over a year. Excellent car, very efficient - 215 wh/mile. Had a problem with the cruise control dropping out on motorway journeys but it seems to have either been fixed by a software update or got used to my driving style. Looking forward to the lights and rain sensor being fixed. All very minor gripes. Everything else is great.
A good video and I agree with most of the points. I've had my 72-reg MYLR (blue) for just over 18 months and love it. The only gripes I have are: 1. The software's panicked squawking and steering-wheel grabbing when Autopilot's not engaged. 2. The software's unnecessary braking, unerring aim at potholes, and tendency to give back control when Autopilot _is_ engaged. 3. The headlight and windscreen wiper problems described in the video. I always control the headlight beams manually anyway now as I can usually see that another vehicle's _about_ to come round the corner ahead whereas the MY waits until the other headlights are shining straight at it. (I've not received the matrix software update yet.) 4. The USB ports in the centre console aren't connected to the infotainment system, so I can't play my USB stick of favourite music unless I ditch the dashcam stick in the glovebox. As the car has two phone charging pads, the 4 USB ports not in the glovebox are essentially pointless. 5. Some swine in a car park dinked the driver's door when the car was just ten days old. I don't find the firm ride a problem. The easy way to remove the parcel shelf is to lift the inner end to release the lugs and then slide the shelf out. Slide it in lug end first to replace it.
@@leemarsh5258 Hi Lee. Thanks for the suggestion. But the manual says: "Do not connect multiple devices using a USB hub. This can prevent connected devices from charging or from being recognized by Media Player, Sentry Mode, Dashcam, etc."
I've got a '23' MYLR. Also had the seat sensor fault, but since then, no problems. Great car! Fun to drive, comfortable on road trips. Trip planning is marvelous and easy to use. I'm happy to recommend one to people who are looking to purchase an EV.
Only gripe is the lack of a speed limiter. OK it is possible to set a warning that will make the speed on the display pulse slightly or (very annoying) sound a bleep. I live in Wales so 20mph limits are all over the place - my previous Zoe had a limiter and it took so much stress out of driving round towns - no bleeps, no pulsating displays, you knew from the feedback on the accelerator pedal that you had reached the limit. Otherwise, Model Y is really good.
Great review Richard , I have had my YLR for exactly a year now covered 19,000 faultless miles in this time , total mileage 23000 still on original Michelins , only gripe is the ride quality which is well documented , will def get the new Juniper when it eventually lands !!
Great review and accurate. I have a LR, 1 year 20,000 miles, still on original tyres. Brake discs look like new. Build quality excellent. No problems at all apart from the irritating rain sensor issue which has now improved. Looking forward to improved ride on the new version.
Very good video thanks. I picked up my Model Y LR from Southampton docks in late March 2023 and it's been fault free in nearly 10k miles. I'd always assumed it has comfort suspension as the ride is no worse than the iPace it replaced. Just had the adaptive beams update and waiting for auto wipers to improve. I tend to use voice commands to control the wipers manually so not a big deal. Two trips across France with no sweat. Love it!
Had our Model Y for two years now and to date it’s been completely faultless. I like the minimalist approach and have no issues using it, things you’d expect to be more difficult like adjusting volume of the radio are actually really simple even without the steering wheel control just put your finger on the bottom left hand side of the screen and move left or right - you don’t have to hit an exact spot. It’s different to other cars but once you get used to it I think it’s actually better sort of an Apple moment.
As an owner of a 22plate MYLR (second batch to arrive in UK) I agree entirely with your comments. I've driven mine to the North of Norway from near London and it was a pleasure with absolutely no charging issues - other than making sure I attempted to get into the correct car when returning from getting a coffee! (White MYs are extremely common over there! ) I had one UNUSUAL failure recently when the main interface screen randomly failed- a serious problem on a software dependent vehicle! Pleased to say that after a short wait for spares this was quickly replaced by Tesla Tottenham under warranty and while they had it I paid a very reasonable amount to get the brakes serviced and air filters replaced. (As I rarely use the conventional brakes I thought the brake service was worthwhile ) The recent activation of the matrix headlights is amazing and now the hope is that the wipers may also get sorted!
My parents have just bought a Model Y LR last month, and coming from 10 years with many different high end Audi’s, the Model Y just felt so much nicer in quality and much nicer to drive too for a car that costs less than most of the Audi’s they have owned. As well as that, the very low maintenance costs and fuel savings are really nice factors and I can definitely see them going for Tesla again after this Model Y!
I had a series of Audis A4, A6, RS6 over 13 years of ownership. Bought a Tesla model 3 Performance as a second car in 2019, was so impressed by the quality, performance and cost of ownership that I 2 years later place a order for a model S Plaid and replaced the RS6. A significant improvement in performance, while having much lower maintenance and operations costs. So far, after 33500km and 15months with the Model S Plaid it's proven to be higher quality then any of the Audis over the same period. Very wild as quality is perceived like the older car manufacturers advantage. But looking at the amount of issues and maintenance time and cost, Tesla in my ownership experience, is significantly better quality than Audi.
Coming up to a year of ownership and 19000km, with a tour from the Netherlands to Scotland last December. Also a couple of work trips to the south of Germany, with 3 colleagues in the car (butts in seats). My electricity price at home has been near the price of the (local) superchargers. The highs were €0.70 and the low prices are now ~€0.27. The price per kilometer, with a heavy right foot, comes to 7.7ct. Gas savings are about 50-60%. The software update just recently added the matrix headlights, but also the green indicator dots on screen have changed to arrows, which is nice.
You didn’t always have green arrows? Green dots? Wow I’ve never noticed or didn’t have them. Anyway… thanks for commenting and glad pleased with the it. Baffled by green dots now… 🤣
Sorry mate, I want a black one! 😅 . It's only after watching quite a few of your videos that I realised you were a mere 20 miles from me. I intend to buy mine from you in a few months so I expect you will have done all those checks for me! See you at the end of this year.
I just had two rear knuckles and two front outer bearings replaced under warranty with 39,000 miles on the clock. It’s a heavy car and our U.K roads are crumbling. Suspension aside the car has been superb.
Can get some great deals now where they are coming off fleet etc, bought a 72 plate MY last week less than 20k miles. One personal word of warning is regarding the Tesla account and the delay if the previous owner is not available to transfer accounts (if bought through a dealer, for example...)
Yeah most of ours come direct from owners so we can pass car onto new keeper account when they collect. But otherwise yes can sometimes need to wait for v5
I really do see the appeal of the model Y and electric cars as a whole. I recently test drove a Model Y long range from Tesla Ferndown as I live in Christchurch and I was really impressed with the fit and finish of the car but the performance blew me away. So fast for a big spacey SUV. If I had the money, I would buy one no questions asked. They can only get better as time goes on as well. I had no idea you guys were in New Milton. Great to see that you are local to me. Keep the good videos coming.
Bought one of the very first ones coming to Norway, done 120000 km in around 2,5 yrs. Only maintenance so far is wiper blades and wiper fluid. -30 degrees C shortens it's range but it does always start and is ready to go which was always troublesome in my old fossil.
Great straight talking review Richatd. Thank you. Looking forward to getting our Model Y THANKS Richard. Looking forward to getting our Model Y. Like the idea of the RWD especially the price new but the range is almost identical to our Cupra Born. 58 kWh. Would prefer the extra range of the long range but put off by the additional £8k new Second hand prices should drop as soon as Juniper is available. Still deciding if it’s worth swapping just yet
Very thorough video. Thank you. Definitely my next car, I’d change now but I have negative equity on my current Enyaq. Thanku again for the great insight to ownership and buying of quite honestly one of if not the best practical family cars on the planet ❤
I am a long time Tesla owner, and recently purchased a brand new Model Y Performance for USD 42,900 after rebates, incentives, and tax credit. This is the first Model Y I have owned, and I love it. Coming from a 2018 Model 3 Performance, the most notable change is the range- the Y is superior. I can drive around with the climate control on and not have to worry about energy bleed, especially when it is cold out. I think it was a good idea to reduce the EPA-rated range because now the vehicle gives you the most accurate mileage. Recently I drove from Northern Kentucky to Dayton, OH- a total round trip distance of 163 miles. I left out at 80% (or 220 miles) and returned with 23% (63 miles remaining) That means I beat the EPA rated range by six miles travelling at an average 70 mph :)
Ive now had LR for a year, driven 27000 km myself. Ive got a big dog and honestly been a perfect car, no issues. Too bad price drops fucked me up, but just means I wont sell the car.
Brilliant video been waiting for exactly this type of content as I am keen on getting a MY !! I just need to find one for 20k 😅 with low miles hahah .. in all seriousness great video and I may just come visit one day
This has been really useful, im hoping to click the button on a Y Standard Range next month on really good salary sacrifice deal. It was between this and the nissan Ariya , however the cargo space for me and my family on road trips around the UK is a big winner. I usually charge at home on my current EV, but the Tesla infrastructure is an added bonus and peace of mind for longer journeys.
Very detailed and accurate. I own a 2024 SR version in white colour, and all I can say is - thanks for this. The only maintenance I've hard to do is top up my wiper fluid 😅. Not washed it yet, as white hardly shows markings and dirty. But I ensure to keep my interior very clean and smelling nice. It's just 3 months old plus and only done 2,184 miles. Someone must have opened their car door on it, so I just got a minute unnoticeable dimple. It's towards the left back passenger door and no scratch to the paint, but it hurts 😢😂 like I'm the one that got a boboo😂. I love my MY, and I named her ~Chérie ❤.
I've had my Model Y now for nearly 12 months (August 2023) here in Australia, and mostly it's been perfect. The only issues I've had so far, which are quite minor, have been issues with the driver's seat mount. Every now and then you can feel a slight movement in the seat when either cornering hard, or braking/accelerating hard. It almost feels like one of the bolts holding the seat to the floor is loose. I've already had Tesla repair this under warranty, but it's starting to happen again for me now. The other issue I have, which apparently is a known issue and can be fixed easily, is the rear tail gate/door makes a slight flexing noise when the car moves around on the road. It sounds like the rubber mounts squeaking against the body of the car. I'll have Tesla check this next time they rotate my tyres. I know someone on one of the FB forums here have had this issue and Tesla have fixed it for them. I'm also now starting to notice a bit of plastic creaking near the glovebox on the passenger side when driving on rough bitumen roads, like something's vibrating slightly. Not badly, but when I'm not playing music I can notice it.
For the 20 and 21 inch wheels: get a rim protector asap then get wider chunkier tires with a bigger sidewall. This will give you a lip that will give more protection along with the rim protector.
I bought my Tesla Y 18 months ago. I very happy except for one thing. Every week I had to reboot the computer as it would freeze. I thought this was normal until I read a blog. So today Tesla are going to replace the computer under the warrantee..
5 months into MY RWD ownership and can’t fault it. Firm ride but not harsh and auto wipers not great but there are other settings that do the job. Tesla vision is now very good. Still look forward to driving it, something I’ve not said much about other cars over the years.
Brilliant video as usual, Richard. Is it true that where you save on fuel, you end up paying for the high insurance cost? Also, do you anticipate any further drop in used Model Ys, ie less than £30k?
High insurance compared to similar performance and value car? Repairs should be cheaper than other cars! Sub £30k will come but at the moment demand is high which is firming up prices again! See my website, I’m struggling to hold onto stock!
That’s the big one for me the insurance I have an eight seater Toyota Estima and annual insurance is £800 maintenance in the last three years has been two Tyres and an oil change each year I think my next car will be a Lexus hybrid
Tesla Model Y Long Range, Midnight Silver, Black Interior, 20" Wheels September 2022. Overall cost to run over 24,032 miles is 16.51p per mile including solar and cheap overnight Octopus Go juice at 9p/kwh, 55 Supercharging sessions ave 43kw @ ave 47p/kwh, new tyres @ 20k £984, Insurance currently £689/15k Cornwall, Premium Connectivity @9.99/month and that is it. No faults to date. Fantastic car and will be upgrading to Juniper as soon as it comes out. Comparison cost of previous Mercedes GLE 350d on similar mileage even before the latest diesel rises was 48.86p per mile and a lot of warranty work. Second GLE 350de was so bad Mercedes bought it back from me. In summary 24k miles Mercedes £11,727 vs £3,967 Tesla
I have been looking to lease a 2024 MY RWD and have been told that the STANDARD sound system is installed in the RWD model and not the PREMIUM sound system as this is standard in both the LR and Performance models.
Parcel shelf is a right PITA to use, but it does cut down on noise. If you're buying, avoid a white one with standard wheels unless its much cheaper than other colour/wheel combos
Good review and useful info on the Model Y. Wooden strip is so American, just look at old estate cars with fake wood even on the outside. There are really good after market add ons for Tesla cars. I would add a body kit and carbon fibre and have the interior wood painted or wrapped. Tesla steering wheels are not as nice as Audi or Cupra. Model Y from front does look like a deer. Red looks nice. Tesla Insurance 3 times cost of my EV and no one mentions that EV batteries will need replacing after 10 years approximately.
I found Tesla service (at my house) to be very cheap for replacement key cards x2 £40, front passenger window glass replacement was £271 (autoglass wanted £650).
Yes, it is a way over played supposed disadvantage. My first car was a classic Mini, and I have driven an early Toyota Yaris, with the central dash speedo. It is such a non-thing. I think if people are 100% honest, they've convinced themselves they need the behind the wheel gauges, when really It's more about style than functionality. Saying that, I know of a Tesla M3 with one of those speedo readouts that Richard talked about, mounted in the vent slot, and it works brilliantly. Looks totally integrated as if Tesla provided it.
One of the reasons I went for a Tesla was precisely because the Citroën C4 Picasso I had at the time had the speedo on the centre screen and I never wanted to go back to having to peer through a steering wheel. Even without that, it's impossible to take seriously reviewers who drive along in an unfamiliar car while delivering a commentary to camera and trying out the various controls and then complain that it takes too long to glance to the side instead of downwards.
@@nigelgarvey2046 Exactly. There are so many hits and misses from car reviewers when they clearly have only had a vehicle to assess for a few hours. These things take longer. For example, not many reviewers put that much store into reporting the truly appalling software of my VW ID3. Every day it reminds me how bad it is. [It's a very nice car] And it is bang upto date. I say this because Tesla's software is... truly magnificent in comparison. Reviewers complain that you have to "go into the menu" to open the glovebox. Instead, just say, "open glovebox" It's ridiculously easy. Or setting mirrors while driving. You shouldn't be doing that anyway. In a Tesla, you set the mirrors to a profile and that's it, done. Then if your partner gets in, it sets everything to their preferences because it knows their key. How many reviewers point that out? Practically none.
3:15 Pleased to hear this. I had a Mar’22 MY and it was as harsh as a skateboard, glad to know the later cars didn’t improve. I sold my MY in an effort to minimise further depreciation and in preparation for the Juniper refresh (we were in the process of replacing my other half’s ICE car so I decided to liquidate assets). We ended up with a Skoda Enyaq, the ride is better than the MY but the handling isn’t a patch on the MY. They are both very heavy cars. I do miss my MY and although apparently the plan was we were going to have an Enyaq and a Leaf, I’ve decided I have to get back into a Tesla so looking for a ‘21 MIC SR+ M3 with tow hitch (in Grey) - if anyone is selling. ;-)
Hi I've just swapped from my Enyaq 60 to a T M-Y LR AWD, I agree the M-Y rattles a lot more over rough surfaces, but think the Enyaq handled better overall, the M-Y is obviously smarter, but the principal attraction is the infrastructure it brings to the table, otherwise I would keep the Enyaq.
General maintenance include tire rotation, brake fluid check and cabin filters. Ideally rotate tires after 6000 miles. Cabin filters can be missed unless you’re starting to smell child vomit in the car. The general service can be completed as a mobile service appointment so any address you provide like home, work etc
Thanks for a very useful review. Given the prices of second-hand Porsche Taycans at the moment, how about a similar review of them? I'm looking forward to finding a CT 4S with my ideal choice of options for an attainable price! The challenge is to find one with at least the features of an EV6 GTLS (iPedal excepted!)
Yes I meant to film a review of my 4s before I sold it recently but just didn’t get the chance. Miss it already ☹️ But there will be another passing through our doors soon I’m sure and I’ll sue that to make a similar type of buyers guide review!
Love mine … but do be aware that if you choose one with the 19inch plastic wheel trims, you will hate them! Do consider getting the 20inch turbine wheels on your Y.
The Tesla matrix headlights are still a long way away from the VAG system, the constant ‘black box’ right where you need light is most frustrating. The auto wipers are sadly just about useless. So many other great things about it, guess you have to compromise somewhere…
Yeah guess it’s not the best but has never stood out to me as worst than most. Vw ID.4 I noted has a much tighter turn, as does Taycan, bmw i3, and the winner Honda-e!
Bought my LR model y in July last year and I’ve put 12000 so far and I love it. I’m a huge Tesla fan. Any idea where to repair 2 minor scratches on the rear bumper. The colour is midnight grey. Thanks
Good video, not any mention of battery state of health, many lease cars are basically only rapid charged and never slow charged. Does this mean faster battery range degredation?
Thanks for the video. So it’s not worth ~£1500 to replace my 2022 car with 2023 “comfort suspension” parts. Cleevey told me it’s a straight forward parts swap.
Hello, great video again, so informative and practical. One question, haven’t seen any notification on software update for headlights. Our Model Y LR was one of the very first into UK from China. Does this mean the car doesn’t have the required hardware or am I just missing something? Any help much appreciated.
In the main menu go to “Lights” and in there you will see “adaptive high beam” if you have the update. If not, it’s imminent. Then ensure your lights are on Auto (on the screen the headlight beam symbol with an A in it)
Hi Richard, thanks for another great video. I’m interested in a used MY standard range; I only need RWD. However, I do enjoy music and radio on the move, and appreciate sound quality. Can you expand slightly on the lower spec sound system in the SR please.
@@Mafke924 Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. This might explain why I’m finding it difficult to see information about this. I know the M3 standard range has a lower grade sound system than the M3 LR or Performance, so I had assumed the same for the MY.
*not many you tube channels deliver integrity and honesty… This one does… in spades*
had my Tesla MY since Aug 2023 in UK. every bit of this video is accurate and reflective of reality.
I only have one comment to make about cost of home charging. now, this is something 99% of youtube/tech reviewers get wrong, but this guy and this particular video is so accurate that i feel it should be noted for completeness.
cost of home charging on a cheap overnight EV tariff (like intelligent octopus in the UK): add 15% to the numbers quoted by Simon in this video, when charging at home on an overnight ev tariff. why? several reasons below
1. kWh going into the battery is not the same as kWh consumed by the charger. charging is ~93-95% efficient due to AC to DC conversion. so put in 60kWh in the cars battery, your house will have consumed ~64kWh (that is what you are getting charged for). so thats is extra electricity
2. if you use a Tesla car the way it is supposed to, esp during cold winter days and warm summer days, you are preconditioning the car (and the battery) for 20-30 mins before leaving home to get max range and comfort out of it. this is esp true for those with kids, from a comfort point of view. during preconditioning time the car easily draws ~2000-3000Watts/hour, and since this *typically* occurs outside the cheap overnight rate time period, you have extra electricity draw of maybe 1500W x2 once a day. over a month this adds up. admittedly there are ways to mitigate this, with smart charging and scheduled departure etc, but realistically when you drive to pick the kids up from school, this is going to cost you. this extra electricity is often unaccounted for as it does show up as battery percentage. same applies when preconditioning the car using its battery energy when you are out and return home. you consume maybe 1% battery, but you havent moved an inch, you just warmed up the car.
3. when on an cheap overnight tariff, you are paying relatively higher rate (vs the electricity cap or other average tariff) for daytime electricity. your electricity provider has done the math, they are not stupid. so although you might be able to say that "i charge my car at 7.5p/kWh", the flip side is that "your oven doesnt cook at 25p/kWh (or whatever the average is for consumers), but instead your oven cooks at 31.5p/kWh". thats a hidden cost of electricity, which again is not accounted for. to put it in another way, if you get 30pounds in petrol coupons to use at a supermarket fuel station, by buying groceries at the same supermarket, and you fill up your tank and pay 50 instead of 80pounds, you havent *really* paid 50 for fuel. its just that part of the cost of that fuel is hidden in your groceries bill. admittedly, with a level 2 charger, and heavy car use, you can reach the break even point for your electricity provider, but i suspect, most people dont, as one prob needs to do 100-150 miles on average daily of home charging to really take advantage of overnight ev tariffs. this can vary a lot with individual circumstances
4. even a very optimised tesla (sentry mode off etc etc), there will still be some "phantom drain". probably in the order of 100-200w/hour. overtime this again can add up.
5. there are other marginal electricity costs. ie when navigating to a supercharger and preconditioning the battery. the extra energy goes to warm up the battery and enable fast (high triple digit) DC supercharging, but does not add anything to your range. if you did not precondition, you would arrive at the supercharger with higher battery % but colder battery, thus unable to charge as fast. in this case, you pay some extra cost of electricity, to save you (and others) time when supercharging. is it worth it? 100%. is it a hidden electricity cost? also 100%
now all the above is being said, purely from an educational point of view for prospective buyers. the overall conclusion stands, that EVs (esp Teslas which are very efficient EVs) are significantly cheaper to run vs ICE. and in the end of the day, lets be practical, if you are buying a 50.000 pound new car, the extra cost the above adds up to, is going to be negligible.
overall, for RSEVSimon, although one can assume bias in his reviews (he sells EV cars after all), i have found that he is very knowledgeable about Teslas and actually his videos are not biased. which is rare these days on youtube.
thats why i specifically chose to use his referral code when i bought my Tesla, to reward him for this fact
keep up the good work and always be on the look out for rain ruining your hairstyle!
I use dog mode when my wife is waiting for me in the car. She hates it😂
Me too 🤣
lol
I do it with the kids 😂
Me too! Lol!😂😂😂
Had my Y a year with zero problems and had a M3 for 2 years before with zero problems. Perfect car if you ask me and so cheap to run.
teslas have problems. service is atrocious as well.
It's the initial cost that's putting me off right now.
@laloajuria4678 so does a lot of other manufacturers. BMW. Merc. Audi, none are perfect.
@@TheoFennel of course. But zero is a lie.
Thanks for sharing glad you think it’s great too!
1.5 months into owning a 2nd hand Blue Model Y Perf with the white interior and absolutely love it. The most fun is taking people for a spin and seeing their reactions to the acceleration!
@nicminit if you don’t mind me asking, where did you get your model y from ? And how much was it ?
Thanks.
Very useful for buyers of the Model Y, and other EVs too for the general information.
Your knowledge is excellent on EVs, especially Telsas!
I think if you’re coming from premium like Range Rover or Mercedes etc it might not feel like an upgrade but for me coming from the Focus (and that was a great car) to my first electric car this was definitely the right choice for me 😊
Good to hear super pleased with it!
Been driving FSD V12.3 for a day now (Canada), you will loose your mind when you get this in Europe. Total game changer.
Lose*
@@andymrkipling Good catch, English is my second language. I still get some of the grammar wrong and I prefer keeping spell check off.
We can’t wait ! In the meantime I’m buying more Tesla shares with every spare £ !
I got my model Y LR in December and I’ve found it fantastic. It’s my first EV too. Spacious and very comfortable and very very quick!!!
The parcel shelf has also changed on the later models. It has an extra fold in it, making easier to retract, fold and remove.
I agree I have no problems using the parcel shelf on my June 2023 model
Yes, but it is a bit of a conundrum removing and replacing it. I've discovered that the easiest way is to fold down the rear seat backrest.
I concede that everyone’s needs & preferences are different, and I considered the pros of the M3 & MY, the MS just made sense for me. Happy buying, everyone!
Wow this video should be regarded as official demonstration video of the model Y class of the Tesla . Very well explained 👍
I’ve watched tens of hours on Tesla and this has been the most informative by a long chalk. Thank you! Subscribed!
*The (over the air) active headlight update literally took my breath away*
I love driving my model Y at night.
Well balanced review, I have yet to see a tesla without a curbed alloy.
I managed 37,000 miles before getting my first kerb rash…. And about about 150 more before getting the second (on a different wheel!)…
The trick is to avoid tight multi-storey car parks….
@@edwardhackett-jones8126 Absolutely agree, I was super careful, but a multi-storey got me the end. Gutted. . .
Cool thanks for sharing 🤝
Had my Y Standard Range just over a year. Excellent car, very efficient - 215 wh/mile. Had a problem with the cruise control dropping out on motorway journeys but it seems to have either been fixed by a software update or got used to my driving style. Looking forward to the lights and rain sensor being fixed. All very minor gripes. Everything else is great.
A good video and I agree with most of the points. I've had my 72-reg MYLR (blue) for just over 18 months and love it. The only gripes I have are:
(I've not received the matrix software update yet.)
Mini USB Hub in the glovebox and then you can have both USB Stick and HD/USB Stick for Music perhaps?
@@leemarsh5258 Hi Lee. Thanks for the suggestion. But the manual says: "Do not connect multiple devices using a USB hub. This can prevent connected devices from charging or from being recognized by Media Player, Sentry Mode, Dashcam, etc."
As always, concise and detailed and exactly what a buyer needs to know! Great job.
I appreciate that!
I've got a '23' MYLR. Also had the seat sensor fault, but since then, no problems. Great car! Fun to drive, comfortable on road trips. Trip planning is marvelous and easy to use. I'm happy to recommend one to people who are looking to purchase an EV.
What a great sup up of the brilliant Model Y. Thanks for your continuous work to show the benefits and convenience of EVs! Two thumbs up!
Love it!
Thanks for sharing and glad you love it
Had our Model Y for two years now and to date it’s been completely faultless.
See you soon! We usually have a handful in stock and with plenty coming and going
The rain sensor wipers are a bit like training a toddler. Wipe when they don't need to, don't wipe when they need to 😅
I just had two rear knuckles and two front outer bearings replaced under warranty with 39,000 miles on the clock. It’s a heavy car and our U.K roads are crumbling. Suspension aside the car has been superb.
We like our LR MY a lot. Pity the ride is so firm, but the pay-off is that the car hides its weight well and feels nimble.
Favorite color for me is midnight cherry red, and ik like to wait for the upgrade in 2025.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching and sharing this info. That’s high mileage and properly cold I cannot even imagine!
Simply a brilliant car, now regularly charging on excess Solar 😊
Great straight talking review Richatd. Thank you. Looking forward to getting our Model Y
THANKS Richard.
Thanku again for the great insight to ownership and buying of quite honestly one of if not the best practical family cars on the planet ❤
didn’t realise Y had track mode on the performance version, good to know.
My whipers m3 MIC 2021 LFP have made a MAJOR leap 2 weeks ago. Day and night difference. Way more agressive finally.
Can’t fault my model Y does everything you want a car to do.
Brilliant video been waiting for exactly this type of content as I am keen on getting a MY !! I just need to find one for 20k 😅 with low miles hahah .. in all seriousness great video and I may just come visit one day
Blue is the best colour, it’s the fastest after all 😂😂
Impeccable timing! Cheers!
Nice video Richard. Thanks for all the hard work
This has been really useful, im hoping to click the button on a Y Standard Range next month on really good salary sacrifice deal.

Loads of great information there….thanks Richard.
Ok, now I am interested just "what you can do to the battery" 😀
For the 20 and 21 inch wheels: get a rim protector asap then get wider chunkier tires with a bigger sidewall. This will give you a lip that will give more protection along with the rim protector.
Thanks Richard. Best regards Martin
Test drove one at the Electrify Everything show at the weekend. 3 or Y will be choice when I replace my current petrol car in about 12 months time
I bought my Tesla Y 18 months ago.
Moisture in the back lights is often due to using jet washers. Wash by hand at home with a gentle hose people. 2020 m3 dry back lights.
I want one white and white seats treat myself next year
Brilliant video as usual, Richard.
Nonsense, I had a quote from LV yesterday to change from a 1ltr Polo Life to a Model 3 RWD LR and was quoted £76 for the remaining 8 months this year.
So glad i watched this am going to view one tomorrow
White with std wheels were cheaper new and cheaper used.
@@RSEV Indeed, but they suffer worse depreciation than the non-white non-standard wheeled cars due to their desirability
Great informative video.
I can remember the Mini speedo was in the middle and still is
Yes, it is a way over played supposed disadvantage.
Couple of questions.
What annual servicing is required and what maintenance is required to comply with warranty?
Zero requirement for maintenance to maintain the warranty.
General maintenance include tire rotation, brake fluid check and cabin filters. Ideally rotate tires after 6000 miles. Cabin filters can be missed unless you’re starting to smell child vomit in the car. The general service can be completed as a mobile service appointment so any address you provide like home, work etc
Parcel shelf is huge contributor to noises from the trunk, both clutter and road noise, as it acts as an echo chamber
Miss it already ☹️
But there will be another passing through our doors soon I’m sure and I’ll sue that to make a similar type of buyers guide review!
Love mine … but do be aware that if you choose one with the 19inch plastic wheel trims, you will hate them!
Do consider getting the 20inch turbine wheels on your Y.
Very useful video, thank you
The Tesla matrix headlights are still a long way away from the VAG system, the constant ‘black box’ right where you need light is most frustrating. The auto wipers are sadly just about useless. So many other great things about it, guess you have to compromise somewhere…
The only issue I have with my Y is the turning circle...OMG it needs a lot of space.
I plan my tight turns with the aid of a Mariner's chart. Compared to my old Volvo 850 which is just *so* much better.😅
Yeah guess it’s not the best but has never stood out to me as worst than most.
Vw ID.4 I noted has a much tighter turn, as does Taycan, bmw i3, and the winner Honda-e!
@@RSEV Yes, it's just the first time when you try it and then realise "Oh... That's going to need planning in future!" 🤣
That's the toll for having 21" wheels.....

super informative review. Thanks!
Excellent detailed video, just brilliant really. Job well done!!!
Great video, currently looking for one 👍🏻
Bought my LR model y in July last year and I’ve put 12000 so far and I love it. I’m a huge Tesla fan. Any idea where to repair 2 minor scratches on the rear bumper. The colour is midnight grey. Thanks
Good video, not any mention of battery state of health, many lease cars are basically only rapid charged and never slow charged. Does this mean faster battery range degredation?
One of our last videos is a model 3 after over 100,000 miles
Good video Richard
Is the insurance more ? I want one next may ❤
Thanks for the video. So it’s not worth ~£1500 to replace my 2022 car with 2023 “comfort suspension” parts. Cleevey told me it’s a straight forward parts swap.
*download acceleration boost* it makes your LR almost as quick as the performance! It’s even refundable if you don’t love it ! (You will)
Hello, great video again, so informative and practical.
Then ensure your lights are on Auto (on the screen the headlight beam symbol with an A in it)
Did you just say that the standard range has premium audio?
Hi Richard, thanks for another great video. I’m interested in a used MY standard range; I only need RWD. However, I do enjoy music and radio on the move, and appreciate sound quality. Can you expand slightly on the lower spec sound system in the SR please.
As far as I know, there is no lower spec sound system in the model Y RWD.
@@Mafke924 Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. This might explain why I’m finding it difficult to see information about this. I know the M3 standard range has a lower grade sound system than the M3 LR or Performance, so I had assumed the same for the MY.
I would also like to say it's a great sound system!!
It’s the same audio. I’m sure I said in video but yeah all good, all the same. Sr still have double laminated glass, hepa cabin filters etc. too
