    Going up to Connecticut to look at 248 Fiesta Vee. Fresh water boat, looks clean from photos, I'll sniff around for mold, it's a 2000 year. The price is good, and I'm a mechanic, so I can wrench on my on stuff. It has a volvo propulsion package. Don't know much about the new drives, I know the old AQ's 270,280, and 290. And all SBC engines. Anyway, good job on your boat.

      @@bobmacey5730 The hull seems to be fiberglass wherever I have looked. The bulkhead and various reinforcing areas (like where the seats are) appear to be fiberglass wrapped wood. I don’t believe there are “wood sandwiches” inside the hull like some manufacturers use. Plus the boat is heavy… 6200 lbs. dry for ours.

      @@RandomlyAwkward1 where was the water leak in the aft cabin coming from i have a 2004 fiesta vee 250 i have water lines coming down the back wall and my carpet is also old and smelly i wish i knew where its originating from

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jasonrubenstein582 Hey Jason… the more accurate response for us was “Where was it not coming from!”
      A few places that we had leaks were where you wouldn’t suspect. The drains for the cupholders by the trashcan are supposed to have plastic polyethylene tubing running down into the bilge so if drink condensation or rain gets into that little hole, it runs down into the bilge. Those were missing. The Fiesta Vee 270 has a trashcan back in the port side near the stern seating. That trashcan was replaced by the previous owner with a trashcan of the incorrect size, leaving a big gaping hole that leaked around the edges. We put in a new Rubbermaid bathroom sized trashcan and then siliconed it in so water cannot get past it. Also, if you remove your seat cushions, there are metal clips screwed into the fiberglass that hold the cushions in place. All of ours were loose and some of them were missing. Over time water goes behind the seat cushion and gets into those holes. Also, there were a couple of hairline cracks in the fiberglass seat that were only visible when you removed the bottom cushion. I just used some sealant on my finger and sealed those cracks up. There were also a couple screws that had been put into the fiberglass over the years and then removed. Those holes were never caulked so water leaked into them as well. All of these holes had a common denominator. They all leaked into the void that was above the ceiling in the rear berth. This is where water collected and caused a severe black mold issue for us. It was on the other side of the vinyl, so it trapped in moisture and we didn’t see it until we removed it. We couldn’t see it, but we could smell it. Also, the water that ran down the walls ended up on the carpeting which ruined that as well. One last spot was the exterior speakers that were on the deck. Over the last 20 years, the paper speaker cones rotted out, leaving a hole where the grilles are. Whenever it rained or got wet water got into the speaker grilles and also dripped down into the ceiling. The same thing happened with the speakers in the forward berth. If you remove those they go into the anchor rode locker. That’s nothing but moisture there as well. We removed all of the speakers and covered them with those plastic discs that you put on the wall to keep door knobs from hitting them and siliconed those into place. We now use Bluetooth speakers and have not had an issue. Sorry for the long winded response but we found leaks everywhere and these are the ones that we could think of. Hopefully that gives you some direction.

    • @RandomlyAwkward1

      We did not have any delimitation (Probably the only issue we didn't have...) so it sounds like you may have had a leak near the hatch.We had a leak under the horns as well as some old snaps that had been removed, but the screw hole was not sealed. Feel free to ask any questions when you get into fixing it up as I may have already experienced the issue and found a solution. The bet thing for it is to get out there and run it!

    What ended up being the issue with the engine not going over idle speed? Don't think you mentioned that in the vid....interested to know what actually resolved that....BTW amazing job and she looks like a beautiful boat, happy boating 🎉

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! The water pressure sensor switch was faulty. It was partially obstructed where it screws into the top of the manifold riser and was giving a false reading, saying that the water pressure was low. This in turn sent a signal to the onboard computer to put the engine into Guardian mode, which sends the engine back down to idle speed. When you return the throttle to neutral it, resets it, and then you can accelerate again. Replacing the switch took care of the problem. If you are out on the water and this happens to you, you can disconnect the electrical connection at the top of the pressure switch and the engine will run at 80% without going into Guardian mode. That’s once you verify that you don’t have an obstruction in the cooling system. This way you can make it back to the dock safely and not have to call Sea Tow…

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the compliment…my wife was responsible for sourcing all of the materials for the interior. The Berber carpet came from Lowe’s but that backfired because we needed another 8 x 10 roll and they only had one in stock and it was a close out. We ended up getting the other carpet at a place called Ollies discount store. I don’t know if they have those where you are but it was a bargain bin closeout type deal. We got the padded vinyl as well as the upholstery vinyl and piping on Amazon from a place called “Bry-Tech”. We became good friends with a man that owned a local canvas shop and he let my wife come in and do the sewing on his commercial upholstery machines. She paid him with chocolate chip cookies, although we paid him cash to do the Bimini, because that was out of our comfort zone. He was a valuable source of information for learning things like only using stainless steel staples, a certain type of thread that is resistant to sun, etc. We also used all Sunbrella fabric for the Bimini, but the vinyl is not. We used structural plastic wherever possible but if we had to use wood, it was all coated in spar varnish on both sides so even if it got wet, it would still be resistant to water.
      The water leak was coming from the aft trashcan area. It was not sealed correctly and water leaked in and ended up getting into the ceiling area below. There were also multiple locations were screws had been put in and then removed. They were never caulked or sealed so the water came in through the screw holes. I suspect the leaks had been going on for years.

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, the new screen replaced everything. The boat not going full speed was mostly related to a bad water pressure sensor switch that was throwing a code indicating that there was no water flow, which put the engine into “Guardian “ mode. Once I replaced that, the engine was fine..

    Great job! What possessed you to go ahead and buy the boat to begin with after the test drive set the tone for what was to come?

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is a great question. We knew that the engine and the outdrive were only two years old and the included receipts showed that what we paid for the boat was what the previous owner just paid for the engine and outdrive. When we bought the boat, both were still under warranty. We knew that with enough time, there was nothing that we could not fix. I had done lots of research on common problems with that engine, and outdrive combination and figured it had to be one of a list of things that was causing the engine to go into Guardian mode. Although it’s a daunting task, my wife and I have bought and rehabbed two RVs previously so we were familiar with what we were getting into. We just took it one step at a time. You have to approach it with a sense of humor as well, because things just kept getting worse! Now we are very proud of it and we use it frequently. I think the worst thing you can do with any type of a recreational type vehicle is to not use it frequently. I also have the repair manuals and spent many hours reading them. The local marina charges $200 an hour, and there was no way I was going to pay that for something I could figure out myself.

    Epic job! What was the running issue in the end?

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Ultimately the cause of the boat going into guardian mode and shutting down to idle was a faulty water pressure sensor switch. It had a bunch of debris on it that gave a reading saying that there was no water pressure so the engine was returning to idle so it would not overheat. We actually had plenty of water flow. We are in the Gulf of Mexico so we have a lot of salt and very fine silt that seem to get trapped everywhere. Regular flushing out when we’re done is a big priority.

      Thank you! We paid 18k for the boat, but it had a new Mercruiser 350MPI and Bravo 3 (still under warranty) on it when we bought it, which is how much those two items cost originally.
      The electronics (Garmin 1243 xsv MFD, Radar, all new wiring , lighting, switch panels, NMEA 2000 network, Flatscreen TV, Refrigerator, AC, etc...probably another 10k,
      The interior was done by my wife, but the cushion foam, vinyl, and thread to sew was expensive...maybe 3k.
      The Bimini was done by a local guy who is very good and that was around 3k with the boots to cover them.
      The real savings is learning how to do everything ourselves and the satisfaction of knowing that we know how to fix things in the future. Cheaper to buy a new boat? Not even close to the price of a new boat...but we wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
      We also just re-did a 32 year old pontoon boat and it's just like new now. We paid $1,500 for the boat and trailer and then basically threw everything away and started over.
      Maybe 8-10k into that one but it parks right nevxt to the 50k pontoons on the sandbar and the beer is just as cold, plus ours has a bullet hole in the side of the fencing, which is kind of gangster!

    What was the cause of the boat not getting on plane and the engine going into guardian mode?

    • @RandomlyAwkward1
      @RandomlyAwkward1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ultimate cause was a restriction in a water pressure sensor switch. It was gummed up with salt and sand and corrosion and giving an incorrect reading to the computer on the engine. It indicated that we had no water flow when in fact, we had very good water flow. That fault told the engine to go into Guardian mode because it was going to overheat due to lack of water flow. Once we replaced the water pressure sensor switch, and we were assured that everything else was working correctly, we put her back in the water and it ran fine.
