In the Spring of 2002, Patrick Daniel Tillman Jr. announced to the American Football team the Arizona Cardinals that he would be enlisting in the U.S army. This decision caused a public outcry as many could not understand what would drive him away from the NFL and toward the battlefields of the Afghanistan War. Controversy and questions would follow when in May 2004, weeks after his death, it is discovered that he had been killed by friendly fire after it was covered up as enemy fire.

This. Cases like LaVena Johnson's death in 05 which became another high profile death in the army around this time. Ruled a suicide by the DoD, the coroner showed a beating, signs of sexual assault, and acid burns all over her body. It became very clear very fast that there was a cover-up of a brutal murder committed by a fellow soldier, and the Army covered it up.

Poor Pat Tillman. Eventually he grew disenchanted by the war, and later died under the circumstances he did (an Afghan militiaman died as well, and his Lieutenant and radio operator were wounded in the incident). Not to mention the cover-up that later followed. Then again other players like him left their careers and joined the US Armed Forces. Bob Kalsu (Lieutenant with the 101st Abn) and Don Steinbrunner (Major in the USAF) fought and died in Vietnam. And at least 14 players died in WWII over the course of the conflict.

At his funeral they were all talking about how he was in heaven and then his brother got up and said something to the effect that Pat was an atheist. I appreciate your thoughts and prayers but he’s fucking dead now. I have a lot of respect for Pat. I understood that he felt obligated to help after seeing we got attacked. He could’ve done the easy thing, serve stateside, play football and be a recruitment tool. But he wanted to be treated like anyone else and wanted to be given no special treatments. The more I learned about Pat, the more I respected the man and feel like the world was robbed of an extremely talented person. I went to the same high school as Tillman. Grew up in the same neighborhood. Went to ASU on a high school football trip, they have a metal statue of him in their stadium. Met his brother Kevin who was equally just as badass as Pat. I’m thankful that I was able to honor the man.

During the invasion of Sicily, paratroopers took off from North Africa for a drop. The invasion fleet mistook them for Germans and many planes were shot down. If you look at aircraft afterwards you will see stripes on the wings and bodies of allied planes to avoid this from happening again .

Recently, I visited Cape Cod with my family. After hitting the driving range at Hyannis Golf Club I strolled into the bar and got myself something to cool down. When I entered I saw a memorial plaque with a picture and his name on the wall. Being originally from Germany, I didn’t know who he was and decided to google him right then and there. After I read what had happened to him I fell silent for quite a while until the barkeeper asked me what I wanted for what was probably the third or fourth time. It’s rare that something makes me Zone out like that. Incredible guy. Incredible story.
    Take care everybody!

Pat Tilman didnt want the Army or government to use him as a poster boy for recruiting or to promote the wars. He jsut wanted to serve and 'do his bit' as a citizen of the United States like anyone else. He left clear explicit instructions that if he died then there was NOT to be a huge public spectacle for him. Even after covering up his cause of deatht the army used him for more publicity - until his brother got up there in front of everyone at his public funeral, and told them all how disgusted Pat would have been seeing all of this attention on him. And then he left the stage.

Pat Tillman is a true American hero and knew exactly what he was signing up for.
The conspiracy theories about how he “was killed to stop him speaking against the war” are total nonsense, tired tropes rolled out for decades by America’s opponents abroad and anti-government types at home.
Even if he had negative opinions about the very controversial Iraq War, he was never deployed anywhere other than the Afghanistan War, which was never controversial and which he had no qualms about fighting.
