In the North (US) we don't get to golf in the winter :(, in fact, we get crucified for playing on a green that has frost on it like the one you're on. Must have some hardy grass in your area! Really enjoying the new channel Hannah!
This is actually a misconception. Playing on frozen greens does no damage at all. The problem only comes when the ice/frost is thawing, then you can potentially do damage to roots. However, if the traffic is limited, which it usually is because of the cold conditions, the risk is minimal. Many greenkeepers do not understand this.
@@nevercompromise6339 Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf. Or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage. Most greenskeepers know this unlike some would be experts.
@@alistair1840 “Would be experts”, so easy to say my keyboard warrior. I am an experienced and successful golf club manager and have worked with some of the best agronomists and greenkeepers around and across the generations.
Then you should know that, all of this is site/grass type dependent. I work in Europe and have worked in the UK. When traffic is light damage is negligible, and all of our courses were considered amongst the best in their region for presentation, year round. One person’s experience can differ from another’s.
Was playing recently when two friends ended up in a bunker covered in leaves; no local rule in place so they played their shots as they lay. Kudos to them. Was out today playing on slightly frosty fairways and winter greens, and I loved it. Wouldn't play with actual snow on the course and suspect the greenkeepers would close the course in any event. Other than that I game to play throughout winter. Cheers
When taking free drop from the logs you use a wedge the rules of golf state you must use your longest club other than your putter to take the 1 club relief.
The relief area is the longest club other than a putter. You don’t have to use this club to measure the area as long as you are inside that distance in fact technically you don’t even have to measure the distance out as long as you don’t go further away
At around 6:00 you mention dropping the ball in the general area when taking relief from an abnormal course condition and then you proceed to actually dropping your ball on the green. But if you are indeed taking relief from ACC and your ball is on the green, the ball must be PLACED, not dropped. This is true even if the nearest point of complete relief is in the general area. Rule 16.1d is in effect here. Dropping the ball, and then playing it in this case would be a breach of rule 14.2b(2) which would cost you the penalty of 1 stroke, and this could likely be turned into a wrong place penalty under rule 14.2e and subsequently 14.7. Hannah, as far as I understand the way stats are compiled, your successful putt at 8:50 isn’t a two putt as your first ‘putt’ was from off the green so doesn’t count towards your total putts. Is that correct? 🙂
If I hit the ordinary green when winter greens are used, I just drop the ball outside the green, not bothering whether it is closer to the hole or not. The slope is not applicable so rounds are not registered in the handicap system anyway. Of course this applies to most of these rules. If you just play to train during winter it does not really matter. I also clean the ball and play with preffered lie this time of year, unless it is obvious that winter conditions do not affect the lie. But interesting to know the actual rules anyway.
