Weather is pretty temperate, think Colorado in the summer/fall. Lots of wind, temps can fluctuate between 50-80 in the day, 30-50 at night. Big rainstorms from time to time

Man, it's a wonder no one on TA has drowned crossing the Ahuriri River with the technique shown here by the first lot across. At least you are crossing on the diagonal, not fighting the current, but having both pack straps done up is a serious worry. If you lose your footing, easy enough, the buoyancy of the pack pushes your head underwater, and your pack straps get real tight. It is very hard to get out of that situation.
