Embrace your young and able bodied family! Appreciate each other, your skills and your strength! You will thrive because of it. As a senior citizen with a husband who is nowhere near as capable, living on SS, things do not get done as quickly. It has been over 3 years and I am looking forward to FINALLY having running water as soon as it is warm enough to work on plumbing. If I can get more raised beds built, filled with dirt (if I can afford the soil), and get a fence built around where I want to put it (to keep the goats, ducks, chickens, and steer out of it), I hope to have a garden. If nothing else, I will have running water, which will be a life changing event for me! You would probably have it done 3 years ago, but I WILL get it done this year. Then, I can get my dishes done in a timely manner. ;)

You can buy bales of peat moss and use your own compost and it's just as good as ghat expensive stuff in the bag. We buy peat moss and perlite in bulk and make our own top soil using fertilizer from the chickens.. if you don't have your own compost you can use worm castings but point in me saying all of that is to say you don't have to buy expensive top soil.. u can put sticks in bottom of beds and look up ways to fill bed cheap there's lots of hacks. I pray you get the garden you want. Everyone deserves to be able to grow their own food if they're willing 🙏

I'm 70. I know where you are, I'm there too. I intend to have my garden, my raised beds. I plan to fill most of the beds with sticks, old logs, and dirt from the woods. I have Rabbits, Ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens! I have fertilizer! It may not be perfect, but it will suffice! It will work. Most of my seeds will be directly sown into the garden. Do what you can, pray, and do a couple of things every day. GOD bless

I've watched a Canadian homesteader make planter pots out of newspaper and a wine bottle. You roll the paper around the bottle.........leaving a few inches down at the bottom........fold in the bottom and slip it off the bottle! I haven't tried it yet but it appeared to work like a charm. Then you just stick the whole thing into the ground when ready.

Just a suggestion: Wet your potting soil in a wash tub or bucket before you put it in the seed cells.
That way you won't be as likely to disturb your seeds by watering after you plant them.

I’m in zone 7b too. I started my seeds way to early last year and had no choice but to transplant them out to garden in mid April. It wasn’t that bad. We did have to cover our plants three different times, but it all worked out. We didn’t lose any of our plants at all. Our garden produced more than it ever had, we harvest produce way earlier than all our other gardener friends that followed the Mother’s Day rule. I know it’s a pain, but plant just one of your beds after April 15. If they call for frost the evening before, just give plants extra water, then cover it before night fall. The next morning wait till it warms up some then remove sheet. Repeat each time they call for a frost. We only covered our entire garden 3 times and it’s a good size in ground garden. It took three old cotton queen size flat bed sheets and two very long runner fabric that was breathable that I had from an old sewing project. We staked them down with skewers, landscape pins and rocks. It may have been a pain, but well worth it. I won’t start as early this year on everything, however, I will on some plants that like cool weather like cabbage, peppers, onions. Just enough to get me an early crop. I’m going to do more staggering crops so they all won’t come in at once. I was overwhelmed last year trying to get things canned. I ended up giving away so much it even overwhelmed my friends and neighbors. By the end of July our garden was done. The only things that didn’t do well was cabbage and broccoli because the worms feasted on them and they were way over crowded. My hubby and I harvest what was left, plowed again, and by end of August I planted my first Fall garden. Last year was by far the best and biggest harvest we have ever had in all the years we’ve garden. So give it a try and see what happens in just one raised bed. It can’t hurt. Think about it. You’re up early and still out working before night fall anyway, so covering/uncovering shouldn’t be any more trouble than any other chore.

One of the best gardens i ever grew was the mystery garden. My seeds were packed by a volunteer, who emptied all the packages into a brown paper envelope. I moved to zone 8A in March. So I just planted. Everything but the corn, was planted hit and miss. Everything came up, did well, and life went on. Best of luck!

It is nice to see someone putting their hands in the dirt, especially since we still have 3-4ft of snow along our driveway and sidewalks! I live outside of Edmonton, Alberta Canada and we're in zone 4A. We never, ever, ever plant anything until our May long weekend, known as Victoria Day - a Canadian Statutory holiday (this year it is on the 23rd).
I cannot garden anymore, but my 78yo mom still loves to do so and I have the yard and a little garden she can play in. I had a spine/spinal cord injury 11 years ago, so since then, she has always been my garden partner. She can grow a few things at home (tomatoes in pots, a lattice of climbing beans, etc. but her garden/bed space is very limited.
I love to see you guys getting excited about growing and I often learn so much. I love your channel and Cog Hill as my learn the basics and good tips for growing food. The idea of a pizza night is so fun! I notice that everyone I've ever seen make pizza (or buy pizza) in the US puts their toppings on top of the cheese. That is so different from us. We put sauce, meat, most other toppings and then the cheese. I think the only topping that goes on top of the cheese would be olives or pineapple. Isn't it interesting that although we live very similar lifestyles (culturally, I mean) that something as simple as pizza is so different!? Fun!!!
Those breakfast burritos looked amazing! What kind of sauce did you have on them?

We're in zone 6B. We don't plant out until around Mother's Day either, because we can, and have had, freezing temperatures around May 25th! I keep all old sheets, towels, RAGS, whatever I can use to cover my plants, if the need arises!
I will say that we have used thermometers to check out the areas where we plant. There are some areas that stay warmer than others! Nice Science Project for your Children! Microclimates or something! We can plant some things early by about 2 weeks. Beets, peas, carrots, kale, and spinach.

The bathroom is a great place to start seeds. Years ago we lived on a 40 x 100 lot on Staten Island in NY. I grew what I could on every inch of available earth. One year I decided to grow everything from seed instead of buying plant starts. I put a shelf like yours in the guest bathroom tub. It was great and with the shower curtain closed no one was the wiser. 🙂

You will love the Ajvarski peppers. I started growing them with recommendation of Living Traditions channel. My favorite way of cooking them is to take the pepper cut the top off and slit it down one side then take a strip of cheese about the size of a cheese stick surrounded it with sweet Italian sausage and put it inside the pepper. I freeze them until I want to cook them. I take them out and put them in the crock pot frozen and put tomato sause in with it. These peppers are so good. I pinched back my peppers when they were about 6 inches high for the first time this year and it was the best thing I could have ever done. Loads and loads of peppers. Happy growing!!!

Tip for potato peals: My grandma used to take the peels, toss them with some sugar, put them on a tray and pop them in the oven on low. When they were just a tad crispy they went out on the counter and she called it "Candy." We fell for it (yeah right candy..... gullible kids) BUT it was good ;)

Guys you need to use the paper towel in a zip lock bag for your peppers! They will germinate in 3-4 days on a heat mat! Once you see germination happen then plant them in soil. 100% known to grow compared to just putting them in soil! Saves on seeds and you know ahead of time what germinated!

Check the wave length of your grow light. Starts need a different intensity than mature large plants. The lights for mature plants will burn up starts. A shoplight will work for most veggies. I like Happy Frog but would screen it if using for seed germination. Small seeds dont like large particles to sprout thru.

I love making multiple meals out of one protein. One half chicken (we can buy this way at the farmers market) we smoke breaks down into one meal with veggies, one or two meals of chicken noodle soup from broth made with wing, back, and picked bones, and as we are having tonight a mini smoked chicken lasagna. A pound of ground beef makes 6 patties -- one meal with veggies and two straight hamburgers. There are only two of us living just on the edge of Austin, Texas, in a debt free house and extra lot. All meat, eggs, and some milk comes from our Saturday SFC farmers market where we have made friends with the farmers and ranchers and are familiar with the small town processors they use. Veggies come from our seasonal garden, the farmers market, the co-op, or Texas Central Market grocery. (In that order). We believe in eating the best food we can find as well as support the small ranchers and market gardeners by buying directly from them and also giving them stipends when times are hard on them, like the freezes we have had, and money permits (a percentage of our tax refund this year). We are all in this together and are keeping on keeping on. Peace. Joy Giles

We've had the same experience with frost dates and growing zones. We're in zone 6a and every year we watch our friends plant their gardens in mid-April. Years ago we had a seasoned farmer tell us not to plant until Mother's Day weekend. We decided to listen to him and we're always among the last of our friends to get our plants in the ground. However, every year we watch our friends who planted prior to Mother's Day scramble to cover their plants and/or lose them from the frost that seems to occur the week before Mother's Day....every single year.

We had trees fall during the ice storm here in SW. TN. So there is still MUCH clean up to do. Not complaining at all. It could have been our HOUSE. These trees took out a fence. No big deal. Especially considering we have 100 + year old trees in the yard close to the house. I will have enough potash when this is done to last us the rest of our lives. We're older. LOL We only had 2 kids. Y'all got 5. Dang.

This California girl misses those bumper pepper, zucchini and tomato crops. We used to plant tomatoes by Rodeo Weekend. (Third week of April) But here in the Bitterroot Valley, tomatoes aren't safe outside until June 1st, and the season is just too short for a crop. Time for a greenhouse, or at least a hightunnel. I really love your videos, keep up the good work!

Good luck in your seed starting. Its nice to see other people starting seeds indoors since I am in 5b and there is still snow on the ground here. Mothers day is a good rule for most of the USA and its what I go by. Its way to early for me to start peppers, I usually wait to 6-8 weeks before Mothers day before starting them. I did make the mistake of starting them 12 weeks one year, and they got to big for my seed starting area and it was hard starting other things. I had to up pot them twice. That being said, I have started onions, thyme, and rosemary. Onions go out early because they can stand the cold a bit. The herbs can take up to 3 weeks to germinate and will stay small.

Buy a black shower curtain and some hooks. Works perfectly to dim the grow lights so you aren’t blinded when using the both room. Hooks allow for easily removing to get to plants. Water proof and cheap too!

I learned the lesson about planting before Mother's Day years ago from my grandmother. I bought the most beautiful Impatient about 4 weeks before the M day and left it outside. Guess what, it was mush the next morning! I never plant any above ground plants before Mother's Day!

Saw an awesome tip! If you’re building new beds, make similar to a real bed. Why? An old fitted sheet will slip right over to protect from frost. Perfect cover. Great idea!

I live to see you planting! It's been very warm here in Nor Cal, as high as 80 degrees this last week, but know it will still freeze. We still need rain to get out of the drought! I live in a tiny apartment, but you inspired me to plant last year on my tiny porch in fabric bags. I got a heat mat and grow light with a timer and successfully started peppers and tomatoes. Thanks for the inspiration❤️

This was really fun to watch guys! Nice breakfast burritos! The planting! Yes, those are Bootstrap Farmer trays and grids. It was so fun to watch you guys plant the seeds. Good idea for the seed starting location. I like the rack. Loved the pizzas afterwards. You guys know how to make great food. We have those small vertical greenhouses we use in the front windows of our house. They have 5 shelves and I rigged up 2' wide double flourescent lights for them by putting a pigtail on them and hanging them with plumber's chain. I use little s hooks to adjust the height. I think it works pretty well. The thing I like about the greenhouses is they keep the moisture in so the seeds germinate fairly fast. The lights help keep it warm and so do the windows so we can have it 80F with 80% humidity. We buy Oatey washing machine trays to set them in so when we water the floor stays dry. We have 3 of them so a pretty good amount of space for trays. We bought them from Home Depot when they were clearing them out and got a good price. I think they were $16 each. The light sets were about $20 too. Once you have them you have them forever. I put the lights away in under bed rolling containers you can buy for storage. We have enough room in our basement to keep the greenhouses all set-up until the next planting season and then all we have to do is bring them up the stairs. We put the washing machine trays over the top of them while they are stored. It took us years to get these together but it sure beats paying $3.49 per plant! I start 48 basil plants each year and 12 parsley plants just for one raised bed we have. We have 15 raised beds now and a 3 sister's garden. Sorry this is so long but if someone is starting out this could be a way to go. Of course an outdoor greenhouse would be the best but we live in Minnesota and it seems like starting the seeds inside is a must. Happy Valentine's Day!

I'm in Fort Worth. I've had all my seeds for a couple of weeks from Baker Creek. I ordered everything needed to start seeds last weekend.. Yesterday I put garden beds together to plant onions next week. I think it's a little late, but I've never grown them before and this year might have just been a learning year anyway. I got the last of everything I ordered, and it was a lot!!!, today. Well, except my grow bags, I think they may be lost. I am looking so forward to watching you garden journey this spring and summer. I hope with this being the third year for me, I'll finally do well. It's been hard to learn how and what to grow in the hot, hot Texas heat. I'm expecting good things. When it's all said and done, I'll probably end up spending...a butt load of $$$$, but I feel more hopeful this year. Love y'all!!!

I've planted both the Blanket Flowers and the Zinnias from seeds that were in a paper bag, in my garage, for at least two years and maybe more. The Blanket Flowers will self seed themselves often. Just rough up the soil and pat them down, barely covered. Zinnias will also self seed at times, but I do stick them a bit deeper. Butterflies love them both and the only pest I've had on mine so far have been aphids in moist areas. The Blanket Flowers are a desert plant and as such can sit waiting for a long time before they get enough rain to sprout and grow roots. Once established they need very little water to keep blooming.

I started with a cold frame that I dug dug into the side of a hill. The results were extraordinary. I Then shifted to a budget high tunnel (cheap plastic drop cloths, 1/2 plastic pipe, ) and the results were better yet. Finally I bought an 8 by 12 green house for $1,000 bucks. I've had a blast with it. Ps they are season extenders.

Lol, I did the same with my peppers. I had one that decided to sprout up in the garden last September when the temps dropped in October I dug it up and planted it in a small pot and it lives in my kitchen window. In May I’ll be able to replant it outside into the garden. Jalapeño soon!
