I have a '25 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatch and i've noticed this and the funky idling while stopped in "D", I thought something was wrong and was gonna ask service next time I was in. Great explanation!
My 2016 has lurchy upshifts & downshifts. 2-3 shift is harsh when cold then goes away, but will sometimes lurch coming from a 5-15mph roll when warm. 4-5 shift is often clunky and you can feel it jerk or 'pull' when passing on the highway or around 50mph when taking off from a stoplight. They aren't consistent though, sometimes it will shift fine with no rhyme/reason. Downshifts at 30mph and 20mph are lurchy and you can feel it pull/lurch you forward (5-4 and 4-3). Car is on 2ND transmission at 105k miles, old one had same problems, albeit worse than this new one. I feel like it's maybe an electrical issue? Ground issue possibly? Battery is 2020 but cranks normal. Motor mounts feel fine, no weird vibrations and goes into gear fine :/
Great explanation! I've found it pretty easy to control this via pedal apply pressure, if I stop and then apply the pedal very lightly it won't neutral idle, but if I stop and then give the brake pedal a pump it will go into neutral idle. With the Cocksport rear mount insert I appreciate the neutral idle in winter. How many miles are you seeing on those clutches when they're worn to discard?
So just for clarification, when you come to a complete stop in manual mode in first gear, there is no slip at idle from any of the clutches? You mentioned it briefly after the dashboard recordings. I never experienced this before in my 2018 Mazda 3 auto, but I always drive around in manual mode because I like the control of the gears. I just wanted to verify that I understood correctly, and that I'm not prematurely wearing in the transmission because of using manual mode. From watching your video, it sounds like the only negative thing is increased fuel consumption at idle and increased engine load, which I guess would cause marginally faster engine wear... Thanks for this video, I've learned a ton about automatic transmission programming because of your videos, and it was a large part why I decided to by my BN Mazda 3. Looking forward to your next video!!
Interesting! I have a 23' 2.5 non turbo Hatch and whenever it's at operating temp, AC off, sitting at a stop in drive, the RPM's will dip down from a steady 600 to about 510-490 every few seconds. They come right back up to the 600 idle and then a few seconds later it dips down again. It'll do this over and over. I've taken it in several times and checked it myself and it seems like it's a quirk of Skyactiv powertrain. What're your thoughts?
I would appreciate your opinion. My 2019 cx5 automatic, recently has developed a vibration and noise when on D and idling without the neutral idle control. This started happening after an atf oil change. Which component do you think could be causing this?
@@21mazda3turbo3It was my second fill, I used Ravenol FZ since they market it as being slightly better. Can the transmission get any damage if when you pump in the oil it gets aereated? I noticed the pump I used made micro bubles when pumping in the new fluid.
@chrisz3319 the bubbles will pop once they're in the pan and can have bubbles during transmission operation. Did you check your fluid level with the vehicle running? There are more than a few incorrect tutorials online that say it does not matter if the car is off. It is IMPERATIVE that the vehicle is running and you are in the correct level at the correct temp to get an accurate reading.
@21mazda3turbo3 I made sure the level was in between the two lines at 50 degrees Celsius when on P and running and checked another time just to make sure :/ Do you think I should re do an oil change with Mazda FZ to ensure it is ok? My car is still in gurantee period from the dealer for another 3 weeks so I need to notice them that there's an issue. Which element would do that vibration and noise when in D but not on idle control(lower temps / or manual mode etc)? Thank you!
@hipfire_22 NIC won't operate unless the car is at a complete stop with good pressure on the brake pedal. You're likely feeling the torque converter unlock and the drivetrain responding with some slack put back into the system as you're coming to a stop.

Really informative video, appreciate it!

You are correct, running the car in manual mode will inhibit NIC from operating.

@@chrisz3319 did you use the factory FZ fluid?

Does this also apply for the diesel variants?
It's been a bit since I've driven a diesel version but I believe so.
Is this the reason why in a 2025 cx 5 there is a slight click or clunk sound when coming to a stop. Almost like something is disengaging.

would this also be related to getting a clunking sound when tapping the accelerator at low speeds. If so is this normal?
Funny thing is when I changed my atf that bump nearing a stop went away lol. Or it’s less noticeable.
I have the bump sound also. Like if it’s disengaging something. Cx5 2025.
@ yeah it’s quite normal for the mazdas
Does yours get a clunking sound when tapping accelerator at low speeds?
