Very nice engineering on that part. I do have a concern though. Maybe you can shed some light on this or ask the engineer: How safe is it to transfer 100% of the shock from changing gears to the syncros and gears themselves? The WRX 6 speed isn’t the strongest transmission to begin with, especially the syncros. On the OEM setup, it’s not that Subaru cheaped out on components. They engineered the shift bushing, shift cable, plastic/composite components of the shifter mechanism, and the transmission mounts to work together as an ecosystem that absorbs shock when shifting and protect the transmission internal components. This Dark Matter shifter eliminates all but the transmission mounts, which will surely be replaced with harder material by folks spending $900 on a WRX shifter. Considering the WRX 6-speed has practically zero aftermarket strengthening options, I would really worry about eliminating any and all components with shock absorption properties. I bring this up because I’ve seen this situation on other vehicles. There has to be something in the system to absorb abuse from the driver, and you never want that part to be the transmission itself, especially in a car with no realistic “built transmission” options.
So I had a quick discussion with the guys at DarkMatterX about this before responding in order to confirm what I was thinking.. In terms of comparing possible damage to the transmission, specifically the synchros, there really isn't any difference between this shifter and the oem. Damage to synchros and gears obviously comes from mis-shifts, money-shifts, etc.. but it can also come from "over-selection" (aka resting your weight on the shift knob and holding the shifter in gear). It can also come from slamming the gears too hard which could bind up the teeth on the synchros. Regardless of which cause of damage you're talking about, it all comes down to the driver. From normal driving, and accurate shifting, there isn't any difference of damage to any part of the transmission with the DM-1 or DM-2. I'd venture to say that it's even less likely to damage the transmission with the DM-2 because it's way easier and smooth to push into each gear, which means you can push the shift knob with less force. For the forks that select the gears by sliding over the synchros, if you're able to do that motion using less physical input relative to the oem shifter, it could definitely reduce the likelihood of damaging a synchro and the gears themselves. But again, it all comes down to the driver and how they shift.
@@CTR_DanTHIS!!! I really hope no one is out there forking out 1400 for a damn shifter 🤦♂️ save you another 1400 and you can do an sti swap and not be dumping money in an outdated split case transmission
An STI trans swap is not JUST a trans swap. Its drive shafts, hubs, front and rear axels, not recommended to reuse the old fly wheel, clutch replacement, DCCD controller, LSD, master cylinder. From what the shops have told me the wrx trans is fine up to 400hp at the crank
Not to be a buzz kill, but the shifter is going on a glass trans. At that price point if your planing on making power which is much easier on the FA24 then EJ's in the past. Save for an STI trans without the cable crap from the factory that can handle twice the power. When you blow your trans and clutch like I have you will feel stupid for spending on shifters that won't swap over.
I noticed that you are using the OEM shift plate @ 17:30, it would be interesting to continue a review of this shifter with a modified shift plate from COBB or Billetworkz etc to see the effects of combining this unit with other high quality drive-train modifications.
@@WRXGarage I’m sold on it. I’m going to pick it up. Was thinking about billetworkz short throw but when we did my buddy’s short throw taking the shifter apart was annoying lol
I'll be honest, the install for the DM2 is definitely a little more intensive than the short throw, but atleast it's a full replacement. The shift feel of the DM2 is also 10x better than any short throw kit on the market.
@@WRXGarage yeah even a short throw is intensive lol and yeah I get it is more intensive due to having to replace some parts but it would be way worth it in my opinion.
I was hoping that adding more rigid mounts/bushings would help with feel; but alas it appears that is not the case. I'm sure the shifter feels great, I'm just not sure I want to go that far. Best of luck to Eric and his Dark Matter endeavor.
@@WRXGarage great. Again, not sure I want to go that far. The problem shift for me is the 1-2 shift. The 2nd gear syncros seem less happy than other gears...
Looks good. Wonder if it’ll work with other aftermarket parts ie shifter plates. Also wish the WRX transmission was more robust but I think I’ll check this out once they drop.
As of now, it was designed for use with the OEM shift plate. Some aftermarket versions might be compatible but I don't think any would actually be confirmed.
I am looking for resistance in the shift. as is, the oem is too soft for me. anyone with this shifter can confirm if there is more resistance added with this shifter?
PSA: STI swaps aren’t much more than this!! Why would anyone spend 1400 on a SHIFTER for a glass split case… get a short throw n bushings and call it a day.. if one’s really trying to piss away 1400 on one of these split cases, get a carbon drive shaft, at least you gain a little power and smoothen out your acceleration..

Look forward to the production version. Thanks for showing this! Edit: I’m most excited about improving the 2 to 3 shift, drives me crazy currently.
2-3 is super crisp. Then again.. everything feels crisp haha

If money wasn't a concern, buy this and if the stock transmission goes boom, do a STi transmission swap.
@@xil3ntkha0s I'd put the 1300 dollars toward an STI trans fund

Awesome! Thanks for making this!
Awesome my guy, time to save up and get myself one! Excellent video sir and thank you for bringing this to everyone’s attention!
the shifting looks so smooth!
😎 hell yeah
Great video! Can you do a comparison of shift knob adjustment on it? What the lowest/ highest set point and how do they compare to OEM height?
Yeah I will definitely cover that in a second video!
I bet you it feels like an STI. A great video brother. Stay safe. 👍
Yup, can't wait to install this! Great video man
Yeah I need this. Next big mod, it seems like it will make the case that much more enjoyable 😊

Isn't that what makes the STI shifting so much better? Cause it's not a cable, it's solid linkage?
Very excited for this product!
The STI uses less linkage pieces but still has a lot of rubberized bushings
@@WRXGarage gotcha. Very excited about this! I've gotten used to the clunky feel of the oem unit
If you wanted to eliminate ALL play, especially while driving, swap to full billet mounts, engine, trans, pitch stop, crossmember.
I’ll be keeping my eye on this
Pre-orders are open now 👀

I would be down if it’s compatible with an aftermarket shift plate.

I wonder is this shifter will be compatible with an aftermarket shift plate?

I forgot how good your steering wheel looks
FactionFab Carbon/Suede!! It's been awesome.
Can you please compare it to a sti stock shifter.
I need that😩
How much does this cost ?

Killer shifter, but that amount of money goes a long way towards an Sti tranny swap! Bang for buck just isn’t there.
Agreed. I’d prefer having the STi transmission vs my stock WRX transmission.
Is this shifter a replacement to the oem or is this better than a short shifter feel? Just want to know y was this invented.
This is amazing
Now does it shorten the throw at all or stick throw?
The throws are definitely shorter than OEM WRX and STI
Okaaaaayy well I need one now 🤣
Can I get one for 2015 sti??
😎 you're looking for the DM-1! They already have it for sale on their website. The DM-1 is compatible with pretty much all of the EJ25s and EJ20s
Probably should feel good for $900.
