On the Blues

- In which Chester Whitmore tells us about how it was back in the day. I interviewed him at about seven o'clock in the morning after dancing all night, so neither of us is exactly fresh.
I expect that one day I'll make another video dealing more directly with the problem of the two opposed blues dancing camps.
I shot about half an hour of material with Chester, and editing it down was a bit of a challenge. The next video is likely to be about 'slow drag'.
For those who don't know him, he has performed in the Albert Hall, makes and appears in films, does choreography, dances, and appears in this advert for peanuts: • Video
Interviewees: Chester Whitmore, David Madison, and Solveig Sigurdardottir.

Omg. I love chester.
Right on, Chester. That's why I love the blues and more folksy, down home, and rotgut music. You can know every note and chord progression from from an augmented 4th to a minor 7th, but if you don't FEEL what you're doing, then it means less than spit on the sidewalk. I've seen one string and a broken bottle sound 100% better than a full black-tie orchestra. Just because the man playing it had so much passion and emotion that it just spilled out and filled the room, and those listening rode the story in that sound like a coal fed train.
Love the last three seconds.. I just had to hear that sound Chester made over and over again.
My cousin loved Blues music. He was also excellent at playing it on the piano. Used to write his own stuff from time to time and it was great. He was also inspired by classical music, so he kind of blended the blues and classical music. The blues is about capturing that emotion and my cousin nailed it. He used to play at local pubs. One time he got drunk and forgot how to play everything except for flight of the bumblebee though, much to the confusion of the staff xD
While weapons and history would interest me more, I must say I've really enjoyed the Herrang videos so far. I wasn't even aware that such festivities existed and it's much more fun to find out about a thing by having an in-depth view of it, rather than clicking on selected images on a promotional web site.
My dad was a blues musician and yet I never realised you could dance to blues, till watching this. Blues is definately a feeling which has been felt unfortunately in all places and times.
Damn. I love this guy!
@swingittrev Perhaps I should tell you that she now lives in Denmark.
wow that Chester guy is really something, such a character super entertaining to listen to
@Roflcopter4b Dance can be nerdy. When I finish the Herrang vids, I've got still lots of Turkish archaeology to do. At least another five or six Herrang vids, sorry. On the up-side, I did just post one weapon vid shot at Herrang.
@lindybeige Your history videos drew me in and I personally have no interest in dancing. But this video piqued my interest and I really like Chester Whitmore. That man just oozes charisma and I think you for having interviewed him and sharing that interview with us. I would love for that man's knowledge to be recorded and preserved.
That icelandic girl is fairly cute.
About the Icelandic lass at 3.39. Have you any footage of her swaying and dancing?
Oh that mood indigo...
That was a really interesting video thanks, it was great listening to Chester talk.
Also, I'm not the first person to say, the girl from Iceland was very pretty.
@Lord1Doctor Closer.
What's your definition?
@Lord1Doctor Only fairly?
@kaindrg Not where I am from.
Is there any footage from the blues night opening they are talking about?
love his Ax very particular culture evolution of the english language
Ahhh, the link you suggested to watch doesn't work!
Chester is right, blues is a feeling. The importance of the emotional quality gives it a human element that's not suited to analytical dissection. It's easy to be overly pedantic about something that's meant to be felt.
But we did analyse classical music in a way that was genuine, and as a composer i will have you know that theory exists even in a subject that is meant to be felt.
I've always thought dancing during a musician playing the blues was inappropriate.
Chester Whitmore was great.
I hate to post two comments, but isn't the blues felt in many other music genres, jazz and rock for example? Wouldn't those too be considered blues? Or at least blues-ey?
@kaindrg New New York, the year 3000?
"I've got the sit-down, can't cry, oh lord I'm gonna die blues."
@lindybeige she gorgeous
7:05 >:O
You've got to make Chester a regular.
Rap music is an old tradition
It is true that most modern rap musicians are obnoxious and very blunt, with lyrics that don't accomplish much other than reminding everyone that they have a lot of money, but there are certainly rappers out there who use it properly to tell stories or make eloquent points (Mos Def, Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco)
@lindybeige
How about very?
I was always thought of rap as Jazz through lyrics...
Saying the Blues is a feeling is true but also misleading when it comes to music and dance. The are specific things musicians did to express the blues through music and dancers did through dance. So there is a vocabulary and set of techniques driving them that communicate artistic choices. Not at the exclusion of other things of course, but when none of those aesthetic elements are present it will most likely be bluesy rather than the blues.
This is why both of your 2 camps are right and wrong
did ppl not know that Ax is ask? it might just be me buts its fairly common pronouciation where i come from
Why is that Chinese flag behind Chester?
>Axe = Ask
Thanks!
A civilized form of music for a more civilized age.
Before rock and roll, and before boybands roamed the earth.
I wonder how you all would react to turquoise venues. Well, I don't particularly approve but it happens all over the place out here.
Who cares about definitions?... just dance!
i take offense to the definition of rap :)
So, not that dancing, something I know nothing about , isn't interesting, when will you get back to your "normal" videos involving history and other such nerdy things?
Wow, a black person in a Lindybeige video? Well, at least you included subtly racist pronunciation corrections.
