- Today we do a stage 1 plus build on the Wildcat 223cc. We install a Tillotson PK-3A carb, aluminum cast flywheel, billet rod, and 22lbs valve springs. We then take it out and top speed run it before and after. Then we dyno the engine to see the gains we got from our work.

Valve spring tool is now added to the links. Also, Someone notified me that I used 2 stroke oil in the engine..... Opps lol. Luckily it wasn't ran too much.
Won't hurt it. Splash lube is 2 stroke's specialty. If any did get by the rings, it'd burn clean.
Where did you buy your valve seat cutter tool. I’m building a 308 cammed ghost with a ported head & all the billet and stainless goodie’s.
Would like to see the 22mm carb swapped before the stage 2 build and leaning that a/f ratio out. I'm looking at doing the same build.
You should build a model 13 briggs flathead (5 horsepower) I havent seen any videos of people building them so it would be cool to see someone build one and dyno test it!
are there parts available for it? Honda kinda took over the market with their clones and brands make little to no parts for briggs and stratton
I have a cr950 Briggs and Stratton same guts as a predator 212 so yeah you can build a Briggs now days
My prof at small engine course in college did 25 years ago, it was a 3hp, port polish valve seat work, decked the block to increase compression, a motorcycle carb, and a funnel looking exhaust. Don’t remember exactly how much hp it put out but around double so 5+ longevity wouldn’t be what red beard etc are building with AM parts but it was cool back in the day B)
No point in living in the past.
@@NubsWithGuns Its fun thats a good enough reason
It would cool to see a 670 on the dyno
I think a big block for series 3 and a v twin for series 4 would be a great path to go down
Just testing us with the 2 stroke oil in the crankcase trick. Really enjoyed this one.
Noticed that too. It doesn't mention or promote doing that on the Amsoil website, either.
460 wildcat! We race FXS lawnmowers with them running 13:1 compression, 40/33mm valves and a Mod1 cam and 34mm flat slide. Love to get an idea what they’d dyno. I realize most wouldn’t run over 10:1.
that must be a monster
They are. We can regularly match vtwins in the 600’s CC class.
Most are also using gasoline not M1 haha.
you should do a predator 420 next
God Bless ! Thank You Greg and Wife and Lonnie.... Happy New Year !
My Want To See Motor Pick Is Belowe .
Thank All Of You !
Just love these build videos. Please do a Tillotson 225/225rs 236cc stroker kit build and dyno. 💪🏼
Excited to see this engine hopped up
I am too. Of course I’m excited to see any engine hopped up lol.
@@RedBeardsGarage I have a question unrelated to your video if you don’t mind helping me out. I have a manco streaker mini bike and plan on buying a Coleman minibike tomorrow and doing a engine swap from the manco to the coleman. The manco has 60 tooth rear
sprocket and 5 inch tire. My mods are Billet flywheel
18lb valve springs and I bought a carburetor off OMB
Warehouse that says race-ready carb rejected. I'm
topping out at 43 mph and I'm trying to gain around
another 10 mph. By doing a engine swap and transferring everything to the Coleman will I gain speed due to tire size or will I lose speed due to the weight difference.
It would be AWESOME if you could dyno the timing degrees like 1 or 2 degrees at a time
I'm excited to see the next road to horsepower
If its possible to beef up that dyno, I'd love to see the big blocks get ther day. So either the Predator 301, 420, Duromax 440, etc that would be great. I know you said the dyno isnt strong enough to do those, but I hope the later series could take on the big blocks.
If not, maybe take the old standards the Honda Gx160 and GX200 and see what those can pump out.
Think he might need a different dyno. I'm sure they make a dyno that will cover the entire range but probably more expensive than the one he has. Would love to have one myself.
I would like to see some big blocks dynoed. Duromax 440 and 500.
I love these builds. Can’t wait to see the upgrades
I love watching you tear them down and giving an explanation of whats going on, keep up the good work.
Glad you like them!
Great build ole sun thanks for your videos
18 degree timing? I time those without a key. 30-32.
Thank you for a Great year of info and fun. I hope you, your family, and all the fans worldwide have a Safe, Happy, and Healthy New Year !
Still want to see the big blocks on the dyno!
I got engines from 196-212 so I love all your videos!
Neat learning about the wildcat stuff in this video. It does apply across board for me and cool to see.
Keep up the good work! I got some stuff to order on the Ec website here soon.
I’ve really been looking forward to this one. I’d love to see what it can do with a much better carb. Just the way you have it now. I think that would still make it a budget build.
just ordered a wildcat 223 + a stage 3 kit from EC and the valve tools from your website ,now to find a mini bike to put it on ,awesome video ,thanks for the great info
I know absolutely nothing. I just enjoy your time, expertise and enthusiasm. You're a awesome child of God.
Great video, love it !
Happy New Year!
I wonder what a 12° timing key would have done, that would be 30° advanced as apposed to 32° of most billet flywheels. I'm interested in seeing the 440cc Duromax on ROAD TO HORSEPOWER.
I'd like to see a 440 done too.
Love your builds
Have almost this exact same setup. It will push my 12ft Aluminum V hull 21mph on a flat day with a 100" swamp runner longtail. 17mph on a rough day against the wind.
I commend Jose for sticking his neck out to critique on his attempt. That's how you learn
Why you putting 2 stroke oil in crank case
Exactly that doesn’t make any good sense I’m a amsoil dealer I don’t not recommend it I recommend amsoil dominator 10w30 racing 4stroke oil
The thinner oil makes more free power in our racing engines but we race to win not for longevity so I'm not to sure why he is choosing to do it.
Pretty sure he just grabbed the wrong bottle when filming.
I noticed that and the .003 feeler gauge for the coil gap text.
D***q goin on there lol
4 stroke engine + 2 stroke oil = 6 stroke I think
In the past little over a year I have built several of these engines. What I’ve learned is from your videos. My last build I just finished a couple weeks ago I bought a Predator Max 224 it was on sale for around 140.00 I did the plus .020 billet rod that came clearance for the 224 but I still had to work on the block but it wasn’t a lot, the dipper barley touched the front of the block and the rod touched the top of the sleeve. The cam didn’t need any work cause it was for the 224. The cam I used was the 308 lift, flattop piston, stock head that I did a little porting and I shaved the head I don’t know how much but it was a lot, stainless valves, the spring pockets cut out for 36pd springs, aluminum push rods, PVL flywheel and a Ducar carb that I took apart and drilled and smoothed out the smallest part of the carb is where the butterfly is it’s larger than a .690 carb. I contacted an engine builder and got a complete carb build kit. I broke it in by letting it run to temperature a few times changed the oil and let it run through a tank over 30 min. Watching your videos has helped alot.
How well does it run with the bored carb and all that? I didn't go that far with a cam but my 224 runs well with a bored carb in my RPM range. Mine ended up around .670.
If you run a lot of RPM you would want a Mikuni flat slide with that cam.
@@Deucealive75 I can’t run a Mikuni I run that kart in the stock appearing class which means the motor has to look stock except for exhaust and air filter. My throttle shaft is filed down with a thin butterfly and I removed the choke. I contacted an engine builder told him what I had and he put together a carb kit a lowside epa jet, main jet, emulsion tube and inlet needle so it took away from having to guess. It revs just like a .22 carb would. Where the butterfly is on my carb the shinny part on the inside is the smallest part of the carb. Bigger though isn’t always better if I had a stock head motor mod2 cam 18pd springs a stock carb with a good jet and aftermarket air filter would be plenty.
@@Jasonkartracing Understood.
One very simple upgrade would be to replace the screw that connects the "butterfly" of the carburetor to the rod by a counter sunk screw. The big screw that comes with this carb is pretty beeffy and robs a lot of air flow.
I just want you to know that you are a gem bro. Your videos are like Ivy League classes. I have total confidence I can build an engine thanks to you 🎉🎉
I appreciate that!
Great video Greg , good info , thank you
A Great Build from BRG for stage 1
Pro engine builder tip: After those retainers are installed, gently whack with a hammer at the side of the spring. if the retainers fall out, you just saved an engine.
Always enjoy watching these. Good videos.
I noticed the 2-stroke oil, but see someone else notified you already. Probably still fine :D
I never knew that it was dangerous bypassing the governor! I just thought that it was risking the engine not lasting. I’m thankful to God for looking after this old fool because my daughter and I made so many great memories on a go cart that I added a “joy button” to! It was just a lever that forced throttle to go beyond the governed limit but it was so fun! An older 70’s go cart with the 3hp motor replaced by a 13hp would carry the two of us fast enough to make our eyes water and our butts vibrate! We laughed so much! Now I am turning 56 and she has given me two beautiful grandkids and we are all best friends. 🙏🤗❤😂
God bless RBG and happy new years
👍 thank Man!
Finally, i waited for this for like 2 weeks
You did a great job doing the tutorial, well articulated and concise. I can't wait to see what else this series has to offer 👍
Hopefully a chonda build at some stage?
Keep up the great work and god bless
Id like to see 22chikuni next, then fool with timing using 93 pump gas, then a moderate cam - all dynoed in steps. Then a moderate port job of stock head. I'm under the impression that wildcats have more valve angle than any of the others and have nice machining of bowl area too!. They look like a good head to me but others on here seem to disagree. Lets find out!
Happy New Year!!
I would love to see the dyno graph overlayed so you can see the whole picture not just the peaks, thanks for making these videos!
I’m happy to see some more wildcat. I wanna see some big bore small block building. That’s personally what I’m most interested in and what I do myself personally. However I’m very patient because I don’t get a bike and immediately ride it and then incrementally upgrade things one at a time. I buy a bike and I don’t do anything until I have every part I want to use and spend a lot of time thinking it all out and then build it. So when you do modify things you have a plan and don’t just do something because it sounds good at the time
How I remove the retainers is just a 12mm long socket with a magnet in the end, sit it on the cap, and tap it one good time with a hammer; works fast and easy for heavier springs
Like to see a power fist 212 (Canadian version of predator) be built because there’s nobody on TH-cam that has done it before 🤷♂️ plus a lot of Canadians, would appreciate it because that engine is widely available to us not the predator but is the same
Next logical step would be a big block 420/459 and then maybe go 670. 👍
Used to watch horse power tv as a kid now we watch red beard garage 23:48
Still loving the RB vids hoping for that vent tube explanation on why it’s important and where to put the PCV and if it’s needed to have a catch can with proper venting on a high RPM built motor.
awesome.God bless.
Been thinking about getting one of these wildcats
Why are you using 2 stroke oil in the crankcase??? Amsoil makes great products but that's definitely not the intended use for dominator
Came here to say the same... better edit that.
probably grabbed the wrong bottle-Mark
Didn't even notice it till you said something lol. Oops. Luckily I didn't run it much lol.
@RedBeardsGarage of course, I've never made a mistake ever......
It would be interesting to see a Lifan LF390 on the road to horsepower.
I'd like to see a drag race between two identical engines, gearing, etc. but have the only difference be the type of camshaft. That would prove to a lot of people that low end torque has it's benefits.
You should go to HF and get yourself a brass hammer. That way you don't have to worry about damaging your nut when removing your flywheel. They are around $25 and work great for stuff like that.
I want to see a predator 670 fully built with a Turbo Fuel injection and a standalone ecu running on Methanol
Man your killing it with these road to HP videos. I would really really like to see an in detail head port and polish video. I notice you started with a full electric start wildcat. What's the difference if you keep the electric start? What are the flywheel options like? After watching your videos I'm definitely going to build a wildcat but I want to go fast and have all the comforts. Electric start, lights, etc......maybe touch on that. Thanks for the series. 👍👏👏🙌🙌
Wild cat 👍🏻
Hey RBG, I noticed the EC carbs rod doesn't have the pressurized oil scooper on it, is it safe to run a high rpm with that rod for long periods of time? I was under the impression that the reason the arc rods don't blow is because they can get oil at high rpm.
I have been wondering the same thing
I imagine it still oils far better than the stock rod.
@@WalkerSmallEnginePerformance Yeah, especially having rod clearance of .010 inches. 12:20
.001"@@ebenwaterman5858
BSS Build. I like it
You know what would be cool, if you make a 420cc Duromax powered atv, see how that turns out
Build a Ducar from Dynocams since Ducar is actually the oem for many of these badge engineered engines.
Briggs & Stratton Animal engine next
I really hope you get 4 stroke oil in bulk and just refill bottles for videos.
I’d like to see a built predator 459 with the oil pump
It don't matter 2 stroke can handle way higher rpms
I also think an intermission would be ok between series where you test all the random engines that you have on projects, the super charged buggy needs to get stripped down for powder coat anyways!
I love that Lonny is the "Hillbilly Test Mule". I'd buy a shirt that said that.
I have 2 of the 212 predator engines. One i started building, new flywheel, cam, rod, valve cover, carb, exhaust. I need to get the rest of it. I went all billet parts.
I wouldn’t mind seeing dyno differences between oils, including the Amsoil/Briggs 4T.
There shouldn't be much difference between brands. He's not going to do that anyway because they are trying to sell Amsoil. Similarly, he's not going to test the Ducar 224 because he's picked the wildcat.
For oil I'd like to see different viscosities including as thin as 5W20. The break in oil is SAE30. Any thinner oil after that is going to get more power. And is he dynoing cold engines? They would get more power fully warmed up when the oil is thinner than it is when cold.
Greg can we do the Stage 2 Cam with the Cast Fly wheel B4 Using the High Dollar Billett 1 ?
Very interested in the new Dynomax 500cc and a serious power build when parts become available.
Nice job Red beard! I got into go carting from TH-camrs like you. I have an American sport works Marauder 208, that I would love to modify but I’m worried about damaging the engine/ don’t have a welder. What are some simple bolt one for suspension and power? (I’ve rolled it twice) and I want higher top speed?
Should do small 4wheelers or dirt bikes. Like the 60's and 90's.
Nice
Hell yeaaahhn baby let’s go!!! Hey Gregg my brotha, I’m trying to find M12 colored axle bolts and nut sets for my bike. Do you have a plug on that?
I'd love to see the 440 duromax this way.
Got a test for you to do, if indexing your spark plugs actually does anything. It gave like 1-2hp on a car engine but if it can do that on a small engine that would be a big improvement.
Hi Redbeard, how do you feel about the Tillotson TFB Mechanical Fuel Injection Carburetor over a VM 22 or Mikuni? I am really digging the valve spring insulation tool!! Thank you for all you do. I appreciate all your videos. It gives me motivation for what I do. Thank you.
The tillotson carb is snake oil, stick with a slide, i have used both.
I want to see how our old briggs 5 hp flat head compare to the modern engines and their mods.
HELLO GREG , The North Star 420cc is the perfect engine ( sorry for the mess up and thanks to everyone that brought it to my attention) straight to the highest stage .... I Would like to Thank You your Wife and Lonnie For All you've done for us in "2023" Greg , Wife and Lonnie Very Impressive And Thank All of you for the Many hours , Long days and Nights to bring all of your very Impressive videos to us in "2023" Don't take this lightly but " Thank All Of You " Happy New Year.... Tell Me that you will ship to Me in Anchorage, Alaska and for sure I will be a customer.... Your long time subscriber , Dave .
God Bless !
what is your definition of the "NEXT MOTOR UP FROM THE 223cc Wildcat"?
Finally the one I hoped for.
Thanks Red.
Do you have plans for one of their 460's also?
No one at all seems to have built one of those.
I want to see you build up the Tillotson 225RS.
Could you please do a video on block venting and also how do you know what size tube to use for venting the block?
How about a Honda GX 160? That'd be awesome.
CMXX 208cc engine! Hammerhead performance makes some good parts for
It
My son revved my Vegas carts 460 in neutral and the comet 780 primary exploded. Pieces were stuck in the bottom of the seat under him. So, yeah, I guess better than a flywheel exploding.
440 and 670! and the equivalent wildcats
I would like to see, right outta the box on the dyno
Ducar 212, no throttle stop screw, no zip tie
Ducar 224, pull the flywheel off the Ducar 212 and put it here.
Ducar 224 build.
Let's see a vtwin any model would be cool, a road to hp could be interesting
I would love to see a big block Road to Horse Power
I have to stiffen the dyno frame. It flexes it with all the torque.
@RedBeardsGarage saw that new engine plate on the dyno, here's hoping a 440 duromax is lined up for it. 😀
Since you changing the ignition timing see if putting 93 would make a difference vs 87
I think for “stage 1” I would have left the stock rod…and spent the money on a better carb. Would be also be alot less labor and easier for a new builder
2 stroke oil in it. Did you dyno with it in there? Do you plan to tear it down now to see if it damaged anything?
I myself would want to just have fun on a mini bike or go cart. I can’t afford to put that kind of money in a fun time toy. I could see if you raced these things,I’m just for fun. Seems like a lot of money for not much change in performance. Like your videos and info. Thanks
It would be cool to see a non hemi Predator 212, since they are the most common
Would love to see a build on the ducar 212cc or the Tillotson 212E
Id like to see a build on a 420 cc
