    What about Peter Weller's Robocop. His movements were the best.
    I believed he was a machine.
    The remake made Robocop look like a guy in a suit.

      Well, to defend the new Robocop, we have gone a lot far from the 80's in terms of robotics and biomechanics. Look up Petman from Boston Dynamics, some of it's movements are so fluid and natural, like when it squats and rises, that it is quite terrifying. You can say alot about the remake, but it just goes with the Zeitgeist, it is a cyborg that moves like a guy in a suit, except when they play with Murphy's hormones, when he is in that mechanical, zombielike mindeset, then his movements are like a robot.

    “Nice shooting son, what’s your name?”
    “Murphy”
    One of the greatest last lines in a movie ever!

    • @stevenscott2136
      @stevenscott2136 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Interesting that the chairman addressed Murphy as a human. Surely he recognized his famous robot and thought of it as a thing with some meat components. But he spoke to it as if it was a human cop, and apparently expected it to have a name, even though he knew it didn't.
      Maybe a way of showing the audience that Murphy's restored human personality was so obvious that even people who knew he was an it, now almost instinctively reacted to him as a he.

  • @Johnnyjawbone
    @Johnnyjawbone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +276

    Watching this as a kid and seeing Murphy gunned down at the beginning of the film was traumatic, but really gave the film a purpose. In the remake, a car bomb goes off... and that's it. There's no sense of gross injustice. It's not personal.

    • @AirLancer
      @AirLancer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Everything in that remake is far too watered down and squeaky clean. It's what's wrong with today's PG-13 action films, and the fact that they put the name "RoboCop" on it just makes it even worse.

    • @uniquelycommon2244
      @uniquelycommon2244 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It irritated me in the remake that the crooked cops actually had to *convince* the main drug lord guy to go after Murphy. Stuff like that makes it difficult to feel any emotional weight at all later when Robocop turns to going after those responsible for his own attempted murder. He's just written as a completely generic, completely disposable bad guy who exists to do one or two things that advance the plot.

    • @dsandoval9396

      SAME, EXACT, TRAUMA felt by as a kid. Really. I'd seen bloody action movies before but that part, THAT PART, "traumatic" is exactly the right word to use there. That scene literally stuck in my head for... SHIT, I still remember it now. Albeit not as piss inducing now but for a good while as a kid that was all I could think about. Good times.

    • @WolfhoundMercenary

      @@AirLancer The remake had potential. The director was the same guy who did the "Elite Squad" duology about BOPE and brutal crime lives in the brazilian favelas (really good movies which I recommend to watch. They don't pull any punches). Also both him and Joel Kinnaman campaigned for the Robocop remake to be rated R. But unfortunately, it looks like the studio fucked them and it showed.

      Actually, prior to RoboCop, Kurtwood Smith (Clarence Boddicker) and Ronny Cox (Dick Jones) had good guy roles in other films. Cox was always typecast as a father figure in his prior works, and he was that guitarist in Deliverance. Smith normally played intellectual roles, which is why Paul Verhoeven made him wear glasses in his Clarence role to remind viewers of his previous roles.

    For it's time I agree, it really is a masterpiece. I call a movie a masterpiece one that I can watch over and over. In addition, each time finding something new I didn't see before. For me it is the little things in a movie that make it. Like the way Robocop walks in a perfect linear line then engages an enemy by only turning his torso like a turret towards that enemy then turning his legs like the tracks on a tank and moves perfectly along that new linear line. I am sure verhoeven told him to walk like he was a tank, simply amazing. The remake had zero feel like this, Murphy had too much human movement which detracted from what he was. It came across less authentic imo. Great video btw.

    I rewatched this movie for a second time. 1st time I was 7 years old and it had a huge impact on me as a kid. Rewatching it, i can’t understand how on earth did my parents let me get a grip on the VHS of this movie. This is such an adult, grown up movie. I’d go as far as to say it is even better to watch through the lenses of an adult.
    To put in bluntly this movie for me is on par with Dark Knight if not higher topping up the charts of super hero action movies.
    It has everything. The music is iconic. The gunfights are meaningful without overdoing it. Death as explained in your video has real meaning. You can a grasp of fragile life can be with the mutilation of Murphy… then the weight of life carries on the viewer for the entire duration of the film. Each shot matters, each wound has meaning. There is shiver in my spine whenever Robocop gets blastered and he doesn’t finch.
    Also i always joked with my friends how a great action movie has an underground nightclub scene…. Well Robocop has one nightclub scene haha love it!
    Also there are many touching moments… Robocop has flashes of his former shelf of a human and the flashbacks with his family and his trauma is so well explored… it hits the right note and it makes you feel for him. The consciousness of his humanity is steadily growing and it hits the right cord whenever Robocop behaves like a human. We want to see Murphy come out of this titanium armor and the director is giving us just the right amount.
    A grand American movie.. with a very cynical eye on monopoly and corporate America with all the jargon that comes with it… obsession with consumerism 6000 SUX model, buy that for a dollar…. There is a devil dance between deep poverty and fast-consumerism that impactful to reflect on.

    This is one of the best commentaries of Robocop. I love you how explained why the action works so well with Verhoeven setting up the shot by also showing the bad guy and then Robocop shooting them.
    Nowadays and especially in the Remake, they have forgot how to shoot a movie and instead either try to shoot a videogame-esque sequence where its overly centered around the main character or some sort've "realistic" shaky cam that's also overly centered on the main characters actions and not the world that they're in.
    You never get a real sense of villians or world building in films nowadays.

    There was only one part in the remake that I liked, it was when Murphy wanted to see for the first time what was left of him. They kind of captured some of the mentality and emotions that goes through someone that's been through life altering trauma where you aren't whole nor feel whole, and takes a process and time for you to accept and be alright about it. The film connected with me on that level.
    I love the old one because of the graphic violence that you see with Murphy's destruction and where technology may take us some day, and let's face it we're getting there.

    Robocop is a very important movie to me, I believe we need great stories where we can put ourselves in the shoes of brave and strong people. when I first watched Robocop I was abou 19 and in a lousy position in my life I was suffering from an diagnosed condition that left me cripple, and i was struggling to make friends in college. Most action films movies have suave guys with ninja reflexes, the sharp contrast of Robocop's character inspired me and reminded me that strength comes in different shapes and sizes and motivated me to embraced adulthood and maturity.

    The biggest influence on not only the character of Robocop but the world he inhabits and also the satire, is taken straight from the pages of 2000AD and Judge Dredd. So much so that early sculpts of Robocop had him depicted with Judge Dredds head!

    great little review - the sequels issue comes about because like always... the producers say "heyyyy we can sell posters, colouring books, toys for kids" - but to get those things to appeal kids need to see the film. Its worse now than ever so many films that should have ridiculous body counts and blood toned down to lifeless cartoon like violence (MCU for example) - so they can sell all manner of merch after

    I think it's been said before but Robocop is basically a double Christ metaphor. He goes through two resurrections, once as a man, once as a robot. The first time, his robotic self saves his broken body, the second time his human spirit fixes his broken programming. It's balanced and beautiful. The scene in his old home has me tearing up just thinking about what I would feel like if I was watching that happen with my own memories of my family and children. So you have the wonderful exhilaration of watching the protagonist overcome the evils that changed his life twice. AND IT'S INCREDIBLY VIOLENT!!!! YEAH!!!!

    Great video. Verhoeven is such an underrated master, I'm hoping for one last satirical masterpiece sometime soon (although perhaps it would land flat on the masses like Starship Troopers initially did.) Robocop is tied with Predator as my favorite movie of all time. As someone born in the early 80s, I've watched this movie countless times and it simply never gets old. Never. I remember finally getting a hold of the XXX Rated version when I first started college and it was like watching it again for the first time. Those few extra shots of gore and the extended death scene of Murphy was perfectly Verhoeven. I also remember being genuinely amped up for the remake not too long ago and talk about utter disappointment. The attempt at making it satirically relevant again (which is understandable since Padilha's Elite Squad Movies were basically artistic commentary on Brazil's BOPE) just fell flat and it's too bad. It's as if they missed the whole point of the original ...

    They hardly make movies this deep anymore. The fact that the first sign of humanity you see in Murphy after his glow-up into Robocop is him spinning the gun around at the firing range just speaks volumes as to how much care needs to be put into movies to make em all-time classics. One of my best watches ever!

    Showing each bad guy aiming first establishes that Murphy is defending himself, that his actions are justified and he's not just a killing machine. Each justified shooting reinforces Murphy's good guy status and ensures the audience doesn't feel empathy for those shot.

    • @stevenscott2136
      @stevenscott2136 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to claim self-defense when you're in no danger at all. There has to be a reasonable belief of mortal danger to justify killing a human, which Murphy certainly did not have.
      Fortunately, Robocop is new enough that no special rules or case law exist concerning him, so he's operating like a human cop who's being fired upon and, by chance, not dying.
      Give it time, and Robo will be prohibited from using deadly force against weapons that can barely scuff his polish, for the same reason I'm not allowed to punch an attacking toddler with my full strength.
      The aiming DOES show the audience that these guys are willing to kill a representative of social order, so Murphy has a moral justification of sorts in the minds of the viewers, even if his actions would be highly questionable in the law.
